Blue-and-white Swallows - a common species, endemic to Central and South America. Its primarily steel-blue or violet-blue back and its white underside earn it its name, yet its most distinguishing characteristic are the contrasting black undertail coverts. This small swallow, with a slightly forked tail and shorter wings, is resident throughout most of its range, but the southern populations are migratory.

La livrée du machaon se démarque par sa coloration de fond jaune intense tachée et veinée de noir. Les ailes antérieures portent dessus une large bordure noire avec une rangée de taches jaunes et un large miroir sombre poudré de jaune à l'angle des « épaules » ; le dessous reste dominé par le jaune avec des veines et des taches noires. Reste le signe peut-être le plus distinctif : un prolongement, une « queue » qui s'insère dans le motif crénelé du bord, qui lui vaut le nom anglais de swallowtail (queue d'hirondelle).

The livery of the swallowtail is distinguished by its intense yellow background stained and veined black. The forewings carry a broad black border with a row of yellow spots and a large dark mirror powdered with yellow at the corner of the "shoulders"; the underside remains dominated by yellow with veins and black spots. The hindwings are much more yellow above with a crenate border, a chain of yellow cells surmounted by a row of dark blue spots and a red ocellus, circled with black and blue; below, the yellow dominates even more with a fine network of black veins, the blue spots doubled with an orange-red spot for some of them. Remains perhaps the most distinctive sign: an extension, a "tail" that fits into the crenellated edge pattern, which earned him the English name swallowtail (swallow's tail).

One of the many dogs that came though our vet/animal unit in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. My group worked the shelter night shift for a month, giving us lots of opportunities to establish rapport with “issue” animals.

ETR's "Sunday Extra" job heads light power up the bush spur towards Ojibway Yard after spotting cars at ADM. ETL 104, an ex IC SW14 was recently reintroduced to the roster after undergoing a full rebuild at Lambton Diesel in Sarnia. Part of the rebuild was painting the unit in a heritage scheme of one of ETR's former liveries in the 70s-80s. The heavy wet snowfall on this particular Sunday made for a nice contrast to showcase 104's new stripes.

The blackcap is a distinctive greyish warbler, the male has a black cap, and the female a chestnut one. Its delightful fluting song has earned it the name 'northern nightingale'. Although primarily a summer visitor birds from Germany and north-east Europe are increasingly spending the winter in the UK. (RSPB)
Earning their keep into their 40's, 5922, an SD40-2 and 3039, a GP40-2, work Canadian Pacific's A19 local from Golden to Fort Steele along the Canal Flats in BC, Canada.
The train would later continue onto Golden, Nelson and Trail, although not to be seen again.

Huonglong National Scenic Park.
Over millennia of geological change, mineral deposits built up and naturally created the travertine pools of Huanglong. Formed out of limestone, the hot springs rose to varied levels, making the light blue water cascade over waterfalls into other series of pools and even hollowing out caves along the valley. With rugged, snow-capped peaks on both sides, the slicing river of hot springs looks almost like a dragon, earning the title of “Yellow Dragon.”

Now that the bright sunshine has disappeared and, in the quest to get something topical that didn't feature bleached-out greens, I took Norman Tebbit's advice and got on my bike yesterday.
Heading over to the Warrington area I stopped off at Moss Lane Bridge in Moore and bagged this shot of DRS class 88 unit 88002 'Prometheus' hurrying south with the 5.48am Mossend - Daventry containers (4M27).
In the background can be seen the uprights of the Gentlemen of Moore Rugby Union Football Club - sadly enduring an enforced closure at this time and, like many similar sporting clubs, hoping they will be able to recover once the lockdown is lifted.
At least 88002 seems to be having no such problem and is busy generating some cash for Direct Rail Services.

Tofu earned the nickname Dragon as a kitten when he used to hiss and spit at the older cats of the family to impress them and wanted them to believe that he was a big fearsome dragon. It didn't really work as everbody knew from the beginning that he was a rather innocent soul.
