Because I made less than $31k last year, NY state and TurboTax supposedly allow me to efile for free. After going through the whole process, though, TT wants to charge me $30.95 plus tax. If I try to have the fee taken out of my refund, which is totally not worth the cost, but I'm tired and considered it, they want another $29.95. Extortionate.
TT reps on the website claim that all the people who are angry about the site trying to charge them to file their state returns must have unintentionally upgraded their package, and says that we would have had multiple chances to confirm that this was what we really wanted to do. As you can see, mine still says "Free Edition" up there in the corner. And yet, it wants to charge me! Mysterious, isn't it?
Ah, and another rep claims we need to go through the TaxFreedom site. Like all the other complainants, that's exactly what I did, and. . . no dice. Pain in the ass.
