Goddess Durga killing Mahishasura

Durga Puja which is the greatest festival of West Bengal, India, is a celebration of creativity of little known artists and electricians. According to hindu mythology, Godess Durga is mother who is all powerful and kills the demons (evils of mind). She is married to Shiva (god of destruction and dance) and has four children- Ganesha (with head of elephant, the god of all good things), Godess Lakhmi (adjacent to Ganesha, the godess of wealth), Godess Saraswati (white, godess of education and music) and God kartikeya (adjacent to godess Sarswati, the god of war). All the idols are made up of clay and are immersed after three days of Puja(worship). Godess durga finds its existence in ancient sculptures (older than Buddhism) and literature.

The puja pandal done up in the traditional way....

Here is a small write-up on Durga Puja taken from my contact Pallab Seth's stream. You must browse through his Durga Puja 2014 Album to see some spectacular Puja images.......

"Durga Puja - the ceremonial worship of the supremely radiant mother goddess, is one of the most important festivals, is celebrated every year in the month of October with much gaiety and grandeur in India and abroad, especially in Bengal, where the ten-armed goddess riding the lion and killing the Buffalo-Demon (Mahishasura) is worshiped with great passion and devotion. In Durga, the Gods bestowed their powers to co-create a beautiful goddess with ten arms, each carrying their most lethal weapon. The tableau of Durga also features her four children - Kartikeya, Ganesha, Saraswati and Lakshmi.

The temporary canopies - held by a framework of bamboo poles and draped with colourful fabric - that house the icons are called 'pandals'. Numerous visitors go 'pandal-hopping' during the four days of Durga Puja."

A la fin de la fête de Durga, les hindous promènent les statues de la déesse dans toute la ville sur des chars, au son de la techno diffusé par d'énormes enceintes (beaucoup de décibels !).

At the end of the celebration for Durga, the Indians runs the statues of the goddess over all the city on floats with the sound of the techno music broadcasted by enormous speakers (many decibels !).
