Built for durability versus beauty, the old fog alert station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge has stood stoically guarding the entrance to the San Francisco Bay since the 19th century. Still, there is a certain Sheng Fui about it me thinks--as the old stone building has gradually become one with its surrounding environment.

This ball lasted over 13 years and survived many catches, throws and the occasional chews. Had to place it in the snow in memory of my best friend, who loved trying to find it in the winter, especially.

Bristlecone pines (Pinus aristata), the most durable living entities on this planet, are known to have achieved lifespans of several thousand years. A native of the American Rocky Mountains, these conifers are found at elevations which exceed 8,000 feet and are often found right at the timberline,11,500 feet. Colorado contains the most easterly found environments for bristlecone pines in the United States.
This is taken on Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway, the highest paved road in North America, a grove of remarkable trees whose gnarled trunks and knotty branches have stood here since the Roman Empire ended some 1,500 years ago. These trees are known for their ability to survive in very harsh conditions for a very long time; the oldest known specimen, which is located near Craig, is believed to be at least 2,461 years old.

Afin de protéger sa création de l'invasion de la France par l'Allemagne en juin 40, Francis Meilland fit parvenir ses boutures à des amis basés en Turquie, en Italie et en Allemagne.
La plante fut aussi envoyée aux Etats-Unis sous forme de quelques greffons, via le consul américain qui utilisa le dernier avion à quitter la région lyonnaise en 1942. La variété fut ainsi préservée par Robert Pyle, un rosiériste de Pensylvanie, ami américain de la famille Meilland depuis 1933.
A l'automne 1942, F. Meilland publia cette nouvelle rose dans le catalogue de l'entreprise, lui attribuant le nom de sa mère décédée 10 ans plus tôt: Madame A. Meilland.
Après la signature de l'armistice le 8 mai 1945, F. Meilland reçut une nouvelle inattendue de la part de Robert Pyle: Il avait officiellement lancé la commercialisation du rosier N°3-35-40 sous le nom de "PEACE". Le baptême avait été organisé par l'American Rose Society à Pasadena en Californie en présence de vedettes de cette époque.
C'était le jour de la chute de Berlin, date considérée officiellement comme marquant la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale en Europe !
La nouvelle "Rose Peace" fut offerte aux 49 personnes des différents pays, qui, le 26 juin 1945 se réunirent à San Francisco pour constituer l'ONU.
Une "ROSE de la PAIX" était posée sur le bureau de chacun des délégués, accompagnée de cette note; "NOUS ESPERONS QUE LA "ROSE PEACE" PORTERA LES PENSEES HUMAINES VERS UNE PAIX DURABLE DANS LE MONDE"...

The history of "Peace Rose" and how it came about is a fascinating story wich is well worth telling.
In 1935, the French rose breeder Françis Meilland chose fifty seedlings from his seed beds. One of which was labelled 3-35-40. Over the next few years, F. Meilland watched its development with interest and planned to launch the new rose as "Madame Antoine Meilland" in honour of his mother.
However, a few months later, Hitler invaded France and the future of the rose nursery looked dire. To ensure that the new rose was not lost forever, F. Meilland managed to get 3 parcels of budwood out of the country, one of which was smuggled out in a diplomatic bag on the last plane out of France. The budwood was sent to another rose breeder, Robert Pyle, in Pensylvania, USA.
Over the next few years, F. Meilland launched his new rose in France as "Madame Antoine Meilland". He was not aware that some of the budwood had reached Germany, and Italy and the rose was being sold under different names. In Germany, it was called "Gloria Dei", and in Italy "Gioia".
F. Meilland had not had any word from America and had no idea the fate of his rose over there.
It was not untill liberation of France in 1945, that F. Meilland finally heard from Robert Pyle that the rose had survived the war and was being grown successfully.
In the meantime, F. Meilland had decided to change the name of the rose. He wrote to Field Marshall Alan Brooke to thank him for his part in the liberation of France, and to ask him if he would give his name to the rose. The Field Marshall declined stating that a far more fitting name would be "PEACE".
The new name "Peace" was publicly announced in America by Robert Pyle on the 29th April 1945, the very day that Berlin fell and was officialy considered the end of Second World War in Europe.
Towards the end of 1945, "Peace Roses" were given to each of the delegations at the inaugural meeting of the UNITED NATIONS in San Francisco each with a note which read
"We HOPE THE "PEACE ROSE" WILL INFLUENCE MEN'S THOUGHTS FOR EVERLASTING WORLD PEACE"...

One Canada Square, sometimes called Canary Wharf Tower or simply Canary Wharf, is a skyscraper in Canary Wharf, London. One Canada Square was designed by architect Mr. Cesar Pelli, who based the design and shape on earlier precedents buildings that include Brookfield Place and Elizabeth Tower. The building is clad with durable stainless steel. One of the predominant features of the building is the pyramid roof, which contains a flashing aircraft warning light, a rare feature for buildings in the United Kingdom. The distinctive pyramid pinnacle is 800 feet (240 m) above sea level.
One Canada Square is primarily used for offices, though there are some retail units on the lower ground floor. It is a prestigious location for offices and as of May 2017 was 100% let. The building is recognised as a London landmark, and it has gained much attention through film, television, and other media as one of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom
Huon pine is an extremely durable wood. That is why it was prized in the 19th century for ship building. It was (and still is) very plentiful on the south west coast of Tasmania. In fact a number of early 19th century sailing ships were constructed in Macquarie Harbour on the west coast. Today, it is better known as a preferred timber for expensive furniture.
This red marker buoy was made in the mid 19th century and spent many years in service in the Tamar Channel. Considering its exposure to all weather conditions, it remains in good knick.

I found two old roll films in a shoe box with photos. The box moved more than five times with me and was last in the basement. Now I have developed one of the films, an Ilford HP5.

The Upgraded B6 Switcher: A Durable “Yard Goat”
Built: 1916 by Pennsylvania Railroad, Juniata Shops, Altoona, Pennsylvania
Retired: 1957
The addition of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s signature Belpaire firebox, superheaters and power reverse lever made this B6sb switcher one of the most modern, powerful, and efficient 0-6-0’s anywhere. The B6 class as a whole was the most successful of what the Pennsylvania Railroad called their “shifters.” Like most switching engines, No. 1670 led a career of little excitement, but great importance.
Scuttling back and forth, this little “yard goat” spent most of its life breaking down and making up new trains. Its sloped-back tender gave good visibility to the rear – an important feature on a locomotive that would spend half of its life in reverse.
The No. 1670 is one of two surviving Pennsylvania Railroad B6 locomotives and the only B6sb.

It is no secret how durable and long lasting EMD locomotive are, in particular the GP38-2 and SD40-2 series. I kidnapped my dad yesterday, took him out to lunch, and of course stropped by the train yard afterward to see what was going on.
Sitting on the service track in Provo was an SD40N. It had just arrived from service on the weekday only LUL41 local that plies the rails of the Provo Sub main, the Tintic, and Provo Industrial Lead.
When I arrived at home I pulled up the archive to see if I had shot UP 1696. Surprisingly, nothing to show. After a quick internet search, I discovered the "snoot" was built UP 3432 by EMD in April 1978.
One more search revealed I had not photographed 3432 either, but Doug Harrop had. It was assigned to lead a Rio Grande detour train, specifically hot intermodal train 100 east out of Ogden. Mr. Harrop got a great photo as UP 3432 passed through the CTC crossovers at Strawberry, a few miles east of Ogden on June 22, 1983.

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an American single-engined, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938. The P-40 design was a modification of the previous Curtiss P-36 Hawk which reduced development time and enabled a rapid entry into production and operational service. The Warhawk was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in frontline service until the end of the war. It was the third most-produced American fighter of World War II, after the P-51 and P-47; by November 1944, when production of the P-40 ceased, 13,738 had been built,[3] all at Curtiss-Wright Corporation's main production facilities in Buffalo, New York.
P-40 Warhawk was the name the United States Army Air Corps gave the plane, and after June 1941, the USAAF adopted the name for all models, making it the official name in the U.S. for all P-40s. The British Commonwealth and Soviet air forces used the name Tomahawk for models equivalent to the original P-40, P-40B, and P-40C, and the name Kittyhawk for models equivalent to the P-40D and all later variants.
P-40s first saw combat with the British Commonwealth squadrons of the Desert Air Force in the Middle East and North African campaigns, during June 1941.[4][5] No. 112 Squadron Royal Air Force, was among the first to operate Tomahawks in North Africa and the unit was the first Allied military aviation unit to feature the "shark mouth" logo,[6][7] copying similar markings on some Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 110 twin-engine fighters.[6] [N 1]
The P-40's lack of a two-speed supercharger made it inferior to Luftwaffe fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 or the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in high-altitude combat and it was rarely used in operations in Northwest Europe. However, between 1941 and 1944, the P-40 played a critical role with Allied air forces in three major theaters: North Africa, the Southwest Pacific, and China. It also had a significant role in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Alaska and Italy. The P-40's performance at high altitudes was not as important in those theaters, where it served as an air superiority fighter, bomber escort and fighter-bomber. Although it gained a postwar reputation as a mediocre design, suitable only for close air support, more recent research including scrutiny of the records of individual Allied squadrons indicates that this was not the case: the P-40 performed surprisingly well as an air superiority fighter, at times suffering severe losses, but also inflicting a very heavy toll on enemy aircraft.[9] Based on war-time victory claims, over 200 Allied fighter pilots – from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, the US and the Soviet Union – became aces flying the P-40. These included at least 20 double aces,[10] mostly over North Africa, China, Burma and India, the South West Pacific and Eastern Europe. The P-40 offered the additional advantages of low cost and durability, which kept it in production as a ground-attack aircraft long after it was obsolescent as a fighter.

The Cyclamen, a symbol of sincere and lasting love
According to one of the many legends surrounding this delicate flower, King Solomon wore a crown of cyclamen buds. But when the Jews were deported to Babylon, the flowers bowed, saying, "When a son of David ascends the throne again and the crown returns to Jerusalem, we will lift up our heads." In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, this tuberous plant was believed to facilitate childbirth, and several superstitions also accused it of causing miscarriages. Since the Renaissance, this graceful flower, modestly leaning forward, has also become a symbol of sincere and enduring love.
Nowadays, it embodies the quintessential love feeling in Japan, just like the rose in the West. Graphic, with purple or white petals that stand out nicely against thick dark leaves, cyclamen has also been a great inspiration to artists. In religious scenes, Flemish painters drew them to represent the enduring love of Christ. Leonardo da Vinci also dotted the margins of his manuscripts with his corollas.
Whilst no archaeological material was found in the durable, mineral and easy-to-clean interior, objects from the Chalcolithique (4,720-4,220 ybp) have been found around the site. The lower menhir may be from anywhere between 6,000 and 4,500 ybp and that whole transitional period from the end of the Neolithic into the first ages of metal looks to be valid for this site.
The cavity is 3.20 x 2.30 x 1.90 m The entrance hole is 70 cm in diameter. The outside rim is around 10 cm wide. The rock is granit and the cavity a clean cul-de-sac, so from my understanding must be considered as man made. There seem to be basins above the site and a 2.18 m high menhir stands 30m below on the same 'path'.
Unlike some of the troglodyte sepultures from a broadly similar period in Sardinia, the interior space is curved like a large bowl and, apart from the concentric entrance rim, has no lines of form or structure.
With the menhir close-by, one must expect the area to have been frequented and the great effort to make this cavity cannot have been for the creation of a secret place to hide people or objects - the outcrop is far too dominant.
Describing the acoustic qualities needs to tip from correlation to causation in that the acoustics were the aim of the site and not a by product. Why here? What is it about this section of landscape? ...

My durable, trusty old Pentax died today during this final drop shoot. It far exceeded the 100k shutter actuations guaranteed by the manufacturer. Thank you, my friend. Thankfully, the 50mm f/1.4 is fine and will go on another camera eventually.

Honda's XRV750 Africa twin is a tough bike, doesn't need much in the way of maintenance certainly nothing "High tech".

Bale Kambang (“floating platform”) is a gathering place on the water, designed and created especially for the EUROPALIA INDONESIA festival. It is built completely out of bamboo, using a traditional joints technique with bamboo pegs. The bamboo was harvested from several villages around Yogyakarta, which is known for the high quality and strength of its bamboo thanks to the volcanic ash that enriches the soil. The bamboo was then prepared by local carpenters before being sent to Antwerp for assembly by experienced bamboo carpenters assisted by enthusiastic architecture students.
This floating platform by Eko Prawoto aims to create a new public space, where people can experience the smells, sounds and atmosphere of Indonesia’s bamboo culture. It is an open invitation for organising various kinds of community activities. The platform’s open structure is an expression of hospitality, and its frame - resembling leaf buds – expresses a desire for better relations between nations.

En Indonésie, le bambou fait partie intégrale de la vie quotidienne et est bien plus qu'un simple matériau de construction durable comme alternative au bois tropical. La culture du bambou est très profondément ancrée dans la plupart des groupes ethniques répartis dans l'archipel indonésien.
Bale Kambang (« plate-forme flottante ») est un lieu de rassemblement flottant sur l'eau, conçu et créé spécialement par Eko Prawoto dans le cadre d'EUROPALIA INDONESIA. Entièrement en bambou, il est construit en utilisant des chevilles en bambou, une technique de jointure traditionnelle. Le bambou utilisé pour l'installation a été récolté dans plusieurs villages autour de Yogyakarta. Grâce à la silice dans son sol, provenant des cendres volcaniques, la région est réputée pour l'excellente qualité et solidité de son bambou.
Celui-ci a ensuite été préparé par des charpentiers locaux avant d'être envoyé à Anvers. Le processus d'assemblage est effectué par des charpentiers expérimentés et qualifiés, spécialisés dans le bambou, avec l'aide enthousiaste d'étudiants en architecture.
Cette installation d'Eko Prawoto vise à devenir un nouvel espace public, où les gens ressentent les odeurs, les couleurs, les sons et l'atmosphère des cultures du bambou. Elle invite à organiser des activités communautaires sur sa structure. La forme ouverte de sa structure exprime l'hospitalité, ses contours - ressemblant à des feuilles croissantes - le souhait d'une meilleure relation entre les nations.

There is a helpful article, published by the Northern Echo, giving a little history of the brick, made by Stanley Brothers and identifying other users of the "trademark" (a manufacturer of bitumen roofing felt and, from 1929, the London Rubber Company). Powers: Can absorb metal, which she uses to make her hammer, along with being able to leap (20ft vertical, and 40ft horizontally). The metal she absorbs can also be used as a way to enhance her own armour, making her extremely durable to oncoming attacks.

Powers: Enhanced Speed, and Leaping
Backstory: Brother and sister, Dmitri and Olga, came from Russia to Sunrise City, looking for the "american dream". They would find themselves on the streets for many years, as they couldn't maintain jobs. Dmitri especially was given a hard time because of his monstrous appearance. Eventually, they would turn to crime, where they would meet Katyusha for the first time. They decided to team up, and now they are trio to be reckoned with. Ivan (Katyusha's real name) has started to develop feelings for Olga, which leads to conflict when on the job, as he'll prioritize her over the mission.
