Dunk Island, known as Coonanglebah in the Warrgamay and Dyirbal languages, is an island within the locality of Dunk in the Cassowary Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. It lies 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) off the Australian east coast, opposite the town of Mission Beach. The island forms part of the Family Islands National Park and is in the larger Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Dunk Island

Dunk Island is very famous for its Ulysses butterflies. The resort on the island was completely wrecked by Cyclones Yasi and Larry ten years or so ago and despite sale and repossession of the island in recent years and grandiose plans, no work has recommenced as yet. You can take a ferry to the island to explore during the day from Mission Beach. The attached Wikipedia article explains the island's history, geology, environment etc. Queensland has extraordinarily beautiful tropical islands but while they were at their peak for tourists in the late 20th century, many resorts have struggled after the development of mega-resort islands like Hamilton and niche islands for the mega rich like Lizard or Hayman etc. Cyclones have ravaged them to death.

This is one of the final shots from a recent shoot I did. It was for a local artist named Shawn Collins. He's been a great friend for a while and he just released an album. Check it out and if you like tell some people.

What A Rush

The idea behind this comes from a story Shawn tells on the album about being at a party and trying to be cool.

Well... This is one of the shots I took yesterday!

And if I wasn't sick yesterday, I sure am now... So sorry if the comments are a little on the short side!

I'll really try my best, but bear with me :)

I really love all your nice comments... Thank you sooo much!

I've passed this fungus encrusted tree trunk a number of times over the past year but today seemed to be the right time to photograph it. The sky was grey creating a pretty even light and the green fungus contrasted nicely with the reds and yellows of autumn.

This photo was taken with the Canon EOS R and RF24-105mm f/4.0 L. I also used a circular polarizing filter to clean up the light a little.

One last photo from the July 4th parade. This is a dunk team with a mobile hoop. They stopped along the parade route and made trick dunks using the trampoline.

Last week at my local photography club was a practical night which found use taking pictures of various objects being thrown into a fish tank full of water. This was one of the shots that I took which I found rather pleasing.

An unfortunate misstep seen this competitor take a fall and a soaking. Undaunted he was quickly upright and storming to the finish line !

Taken for ODC theme "dunk" Who remembers the cookies that came with icing that you could dunk the cookies into? This is my homemade version. Macro shots are not kind to non-manicured hands. For a change I used my 60D for this shot today, much easier to do with the tilt screen. As always, thanks friends for you support and comments. Much love and happy weekend :)

The Green Pond Frog (Euphlyctis hexadactylus), Indian Pond frog, Five-Fingered Frog is seen to be enjoying the company of the duckweed.

Duckweed: Lemnoideae is a subfamily of flowering aquatic plants, known as duckweeds, water lentils, or water lenses. They float on or just beneath the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water and wetlands. These are the smallest flowering plants in the world and provide best camouflage and cover to the aquatic animals.

Thank you everyone for stopping into the Welding shot and writing a few words, and offering invites, very much appreciated. I also hope that 2009 has come in positive for everyone and that the new world outlook is going to take place sooner than later.

Peace to all.
