Blurry, but I love it anyway. I mean, dunking is a blurry event, and if you had that at the end of your dollop of soup, would you wait until the picture was taken to move it toward your mouth? I didn't think so.

Stop. look and listen.As citizen soldiers, it's pretty easy to bring life and it's demands with us to drill. We havefamilies, jobs, hobbies, drama and other demands poking us in the side every time weturn around.The soldiers and leadership of the 919th MP battalion are no exception. This year atannual training they took a different route to help the 919th soldiers solidify as a unit.After the command changed last year, the leadership, Cpt. Paulk and 1st Sgt. Georgewanted to find out what was going on with their soldiers. Facing a unusual rate ofsoldiers leaving the unit, they took steps to see why people were stepping away fromthe unit. They conducted a climate survey, talked to soldiers in groups and asindividuals to get face time with their soldiers and feel out the situation.The results of their surveying and had some interesting details. Their soldiers didn'tthink that the leadership was interested in listening.The military is an interesting animal. There are many different cultures that exist withinthe it and they all can work to the success and the detriment of the whole. One culture isthe "drink water drive on" culture. Many soldiers have experienced it- to some degree, Iwould venture. For example, as a soldier, you "embrace the suck." If you see orexperience something bad, you gotta suck it up. If you don't think that you will be heardif you complain about it or point it out, why bother mentioning it? Cpt. Paulk and 1st Sgt.George did what many good leaders have done. They said "nope."Nope, to sucking it up and driving on. Unit cohesion depends on a group of variables.Like, "do you like who you work with, and do you like who you work for?" There is alsothe interesting sticking point of " am I doing meaningful work?" Most humans, thrive onknowing that the work they do has meaning. And that's why Cpt. Paulk and 1st Sgt.George threw a little party for their soldiers. When I talked with them about their rationalfor doing this, it turned out to be extremely simple."We wanted them to see a light at the end of the tunnel," said Cpt. Paulk.Both leaders had the goal of putting their soldiers through a rigorous annual training.They wanted everyone to have a training situation where they were required to do theiractual MOS. They wanted the soldiers to feel like they were getting a chance to train tothe standard and use their skill to do their actual jobs. And then at the end, they wouldreward their soldiers for excelling through the training. And that's why they got the party.But what was the result?SPC Ruiz told me that everybody felt closer. The 919th blared hip-hop and countrymusic while running the leadership through rounds on a dunk tank. They barbecued,told stories and relaxed together with indian fry-bread and dance contests. In short, theunit had a time to be human together.Humans need chill time. When parents get to play games with the kids, this gives themtime to ease out of discipline and be fun as a family. When homies get together andthrow something on the grill and kick back, it gives friends time to lean back and enjoybeing humans together. That's why the 919th had a party. The pool looked so wonderful that the second Nalu entered the pool deck she dove in. It's a common, almost daily occurrence so I just let her play awhile. It was my chance to introduce her to her new water toy, Mr. Flappy. She absolutely loves him. We may just have to use him when the new Southeast FL Dock Dogs club has its Grand Opening June 19th in Dania beach. Nalu is excited over the news of a club forming only an hour away! Before the nearest clubs were 2 1/2 & 4 hours away.
In this picture you can see something she loves to do. When I get her out I always go straight for her toy, put it away and take her to the dog tub outside for a quick bath to get the chlorine out. Well when she suspects I'm getting ready to kick her out she'll start playing on the steps. She pushes the toy down with her feet until she has it pinned on the second step, she then dunks her head under to retrieve it. She also likes to take the toy to the jet right by the steps and lets the jet take the toy under and past her. She quickly turn pushes off the wall and dunks under to get it. Another of her quarks is if I leave her by herself while I'm cleaning the kitchen or working by the sliding glass door leading out to the pool deck (so I can see her) she'll actually throws the toy in herself and launches into the pool to retrieve it. I don't think I've ever seen a dog who loves the pool more, she would live in there if I let her. She may be 7 but I think she needs a turn in the field, moms fault of course!
