There are many ways to describe rain and this image tells why Singaporean calls it pouring!! The approaching storm clouds simply "dumps" its water onto that small area. If you are among those under, only one word to describe you after - drenched!

Ring-billed Gulls are the most common gulls in Michigan. They can be found on all of the Great Lakes. In the summer they are also found in parking lots of fast food restaurants, on beaches, and in dumps.

Medium-sized, rather nondescript raptor with overall dark plumage. Varies considerably across range, but always note tail fork (can disappear when tail is fully open), and short head and neck. Juvenile averages paler and more contrastingly-marked. Flight style buoyant, gliding and changing direction with ease. Frequently forages in urban areas, rubbish dumps, aquatic habitats, and grassland, but usually avoids heavily forested areas. Sometimes solitary, but also gathers in large flocks on migration and at good feeding areas. (eBird)

--------------

We saw many of these raptors in India and a good number in the Northern Territory. They were outnumbered, though, by the Whistling Kites. I just noticed, after posting this image, that there is a second bird in the photo, well hidden by the pine needles but seen by the bird out in the open. Probably mates!

The Egyptian Vulture is a small vulture whose dominant colors are black and white.

Migratory, it arrives from Africa around the middle of March to nest in the spring in the mountains, it can be found up to 3000m altitude.

Most often, the nesting is rupestrian following the example of the big vultures.

The nest, built of branches, sheep wool and other waste, is installed on a slope,

protected by a rocky overhang, or in a hollow of the wall.

The Egyptian Vulture is, like all vultures, a scavenger.

Its surveillance glide and its powerful sight allow it to locate its potential food.

On carcasses, it usually comes after large vultures like the Griffon, feeding on the remains.

It can also descend on animals crushed on the roads.

It regularly frequents dumps and rendering areas where the carcasses of domestic animals are deposited.

A very common bird in the Himalayan belt - they were more common than Crows and Sparrows much to my surprise. They were present in the cities, forest areas, hill sides and even around river edges and garbage dumps. The bird must have adapted to the environments around it.

We sighted it several times and our bird guides found it amusing that we were excited about it and photographed it. The bird has an easy to remember whistling call, but we didn't hear it much during the trip. Maybe its not the breeding season.

So, i just want to say thank to all the really amazing, kind-hearted people who left me messages and comments the other day. i feel silly and kind of embarrassed for sounding so pitiful. I'm normally not so down in the dumps. however, some things were just floating around in my brain and they ended up turning into some really intense spouts of sadness. forgive me.

i had a lovely day taking pictures by myself. i don't get to do it that often. and it was so nice. the sun is so good today you can taste it.

(i guess i didn't realize it before, but this picture does look a lot like one of Rosie Hardy's pictures. So, i guess it was subconsciously inspired by her. Thanks Rosie! :) )

John Mayall: Nature's Disappearing

Man's a filthy creature

Raping the land and water and the air

Tomorrow may be too late

Now's the time that you must be aware

Nature's disappearing

Polluted death is coming, do you care

Garbage going nowhere

Soon the dumps will spread to your front door

Lakes and rivers stagnant

Nothing lives or grows like years before

Nature's disappearing

The world you take for granted soon no more

Read about pollution

Make manufacturers uncomfortable

Boycott at the market

Containers that are non-returnable

Aluminum, glass and plastic

Eternal waste that's not destructible

We're a generation

That may live out our natural time

But as for all our children

Born to suffocate in human slime

Nature's disappearing

And we are guilty of this massive crime

The waste dump Hoheward is a mountain waste dump in the Ruhr area. She originated from the earth of the bill Recklinghausen II, the bill to Ewald and the bill general Blumenthal / Haard. Lying between the cities of Herten and Recklinghausen, she forms together with the waste dump Hoppenbruch the biggest waste dump scenery of the Ruhr area. The highest place of the waste dump is reached with a height of 152.5 m above sea level. The waste dumps Hoheward and Hoppenbruch are a part of the route of the industrial culture and the scenery park Hoheward. Owner of both waste dumps is the regional association of Ruhr which has taken over the surfaces from the Deutschen Steinkohle AG. As a project bearer he is responsible for the removal of the waste dump Hoheward. With good view the Rhine tower about 50 km away is to be recognised in Dusseldorf.

"Emergency, emergency, emergency!", that's what comes over the radio when an engineer dumps the air on his train or if the air dumps on it's own. They then give their location. That's what I heard on my scanner in the car after finishing a night shift. Then the engineer told the dispatcher a rock had fallen upon the track. "River Line dispatcher to SECS.....just how big is this rock? Will you need assistance?"

"SECS to River Line......it's the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Yes, we need assistance."

Most engineers worry about rock throwers in urban areas, but out here, Mother Nature has her own way of putting things. 20 more feet and SECS would have been in the drink.

The Black Kite is thought to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic declines or fluctuations. It’s an unforgettable sight to see these aerobatic birds with their swooping turns in their hundreds filling the sky over urban areas and rubbish dumps in India.

Ring-billed gull

From Cornell -

Familiar acrobats of the air, Ring-billed Gulls nimbly pluck tossed tidbits from on high. Comfortable around humans, they frequent parking lots, garbage dumps, beaches, and fields, sometimes by the hundreds. These are the gulls you're most likely to see far away from coastal areas—in fact, most Ring-billed Gulls nest in the interior of the continent, near freshwater. A black band encircling the yellow bill helps distinguish adults from other gulls

Sometimes when we are down in the dumps, it is hard for us to even think about what dreams we have. It then becomes very easy to just focus on making our situation better and to forget about what dreams we may have had for ourselves. Little do we realize is that when we forget about following our dreams, we forget that we are forgetting a life that we never even got to know.

We are forgetting life experiences that we never were able to experience, riches we never saw to spend, people we never knew to love, and answers to questions we never knew to ask. Do not let your situation or circumstances determine your future, let whatever is in your heart determine your future. Even though going through hard times makes it difficult for us to believe and to hope, we must push through and believe in ourselves and in our dreams.

Kewstoke beach is not what you would call a traditional sandy beach. It is part of the Severn estuary and therefore has a 13 metre rise and fall spanning a one mile course. It collects sediment up river and dumps it along its banks at certain places, parts of Kewstonke are one of them. Be warned...you will sink in this mud up to your waist if you walk on it!

Sigh no more, ladies, sigh nor more;

Men were deceivers ever;

One foot in sea and one on shore,

To one thing constant never;

Then sigh not so,

But let them go,

And be you blithe and bonny;

Converting all your sounds of woe

Into. Hey nonny, nonny.

Sing no more ditties, sing no mo,

Or dumps so dull and heavy;

The fraud of men was ever so,

Since summer first was leavy.

Then sigh not so,

But let them go,

And be you blithe and bonny,

Converting all your sounds of woe

Into. Hey, nonny, nonny.

Leaving the boots by the back door.....

Hoping this is the last of it......my town does a great job of digging us out, except for the part where the plow plows straight down the street and dumps a couple of feet right at the end of your driveway!

A spring thunderstorm dumps some rain on the Idaho side of the Hell's Canyon seen from the Oregon side. Nice and green this time of year but will soon be dry and brown. Some say the Hell's Canyon was so named due to the high heat that builds up in the basalt and sedimentary cliffs down along the Snake River that does not cool off much at night during the hot summer months. Having experienced that heat I understand. However the most common and established thought for the name is that passage with any watercraft thru the canyon on the Snake River was deadly and nearly impossible. The name stuck but to me the area isn't hellacious but imposing and majestic.

Thanks for taking a look, always appreciated.

Enjoy a safe and wonderful Easter holiday weekend.

A dozen years ago there was a miraculous return to service for the Erie Mining F9s in Minnesota. At this point in time it was known as the Cliffs Erie Railroad and the taconite fines/chips were being backhauled from the Harbor to Hoyt Lakes, MN in the old side-dumps that used to haul raw taconite to the pellet plant before it was shuttered. For a few months the railfans were treated to covered wagons working freight on their home rails. Special thanks to Doug Buell and others on the OreRail YahooGroup for keeping everyone informed on when the F units would be running.

The Ertebølle culture (ca 5300 BC – 3950 BC) is the name of a hunter-gatherer and fisher, pottery-making culture dating to the end of the Mesolithic period. The culture was concentrated in Southern Scandinavia, but genetically linked to strongly related cultures in Northern Germany and the Northern Netherlands.

It is named after the type site, a location in the small village of Ertebølle on Limfjorden in Danish Jutland. In the 1890s, the National Museum of Denmark excavated heaps of oyster shells there, mixed with mussels, snails, bones and bone, antler and flint artifacts, which were evaluated as kitchen middens (Danish køkkenmødding), or refuse dumps. Accordingly, the culture is less commonly named the Kitchen Midden.

As it is approximately identical to the Ellerbek culture of Schleswig-Holstein, the combined name, Ertebølle-Ellerbek is often used. wikipedia

If life seems jolly rotten

There's something you've forgotten

And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.

When you're feeling in the dumps

Don't be silly chumps

Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...

Always look on the light side of life...

Time for a PSA to talk about what I post and why. I recently shared some of this on my FB Profile, so thought I’d expound and share it with my Instagram, Flickr and FB Page followers. Some of you may ask, and some have asked, “I see you in Maine, then Colorado, then Florida, then Maine again, some old, some new, what is going on?!?”. I began my journey in photography about 15 years ago. For many years thereafter I did very little with my photos other than share some with family and friends. I didn’t get active with sharing publicly on social media and printing until about 5 years ago, significantly ramping that up when I retired in 2018. At that point I had hundreds, if not thousands of unloved photos waiting for some love. Since then, I have been slowly releasing and sharing my archived photos along with photos current at the time. As you also know, I post my photos slowly over time, usually 2-3 per week, preferring to savor and share individually over time, rotating through the several genres that I enjoy, rather than big dumps. I hope you enjoy my journey!

A late running F16 rolls through the old log yard in Brownville, behind Canadian Pacific GP38-2 3100. A rather varied assortment of power compared to what the train usually runs with made it worth hanging around after getting out of work, especially with the large 101 car train, and 10k tons (it also helped I had moved those side dumps out of the way a few days prior).

RS11 7216 and C424 7230 leave the Area 8, a.k.a. Dunka Mine, with a 36-car train of side dumps loaded with raw taconite rock. Leader 7216 was bought from the BN in 1988 and came with a high short hood. Shop forces at LTV Hoyt Lakes chopped the nose and painted the unit in Aug 1990.

The headlights on this truck are a bit off-kilter. One headlight is pointing up into the trees. It is obviously being used to spotlight raccoons who are stealing the fruit off the trees. It is questionable whether this truck drives, dumps or lights up, but it is after all for farm use. All those pesky emissions regulations, decent brakes, good tires, nice upholstery and stunning paint finish are only in the way in a hard working truck. HTT

"Monte Kali" and "Kalimanjaro" are local colloquial names for the spoil heap or spoil tip that towers over the town of Heringen, Hesse, Germany. It is one of a number of sites where the K+S chemical company dumps sodium chloride (common table salt), a byproduct of potash mining and processing, a major industry in the area.

The names are puns of Kali (shorthand for Kalisalz, German for "potash") on "Monte Carlo" and "Kilimanjaro."

The heap lies directly next to the border with the state of Thuringia, and hence next to the former inner German border with what was once East Germany

The heap rises over 250 metres (820 ft) above the surrounding land, its summit reaching 530 metres (1,740 ft) above sea level.According to the Werra Potash Mining Museum in Heringen, Monte Kali has been in operation since 1976; as of August 2016, it covered 98 hectares (240 acres) and contained approximately 201 million tonnes of salt, with another 900 tonnes being added every hour and 7.2 million tonnes a yearThe amount of salt that goes to the region's soil and rivers is enormous.

The Werra river has become so salty (up to 2.5 g/L chloride ions, which is saltier than parts of the Baltic Sea) that few freshwater organisms can survive in it. The groundwater has become salty as well. K+S are licensed to keep dumping salt at the facility until 2030. (Wikipedia)

I came across this armchair during my walk in the forest today. I haven't noticed it until now because it was probably completely overgrown. Now in autumn the leaves have disappeared and the armchair has reappeared a little.

It upsets me that someone just dumps his trash in the forest. But I find it impressive with what force nature takes back its rights.
