Swans on the river Korana. Next to the river Korana is one of the most beautiful promenades in the whole city Karlovac where people walking, watching and feed swans. River Korana become a great place for swans. One large flock whole year stay on the river.
I always wonder when I see these how many there will be the next day, yet somehow the species seems to survive. It's getting harder though in public parks where a significant number of dog owners don't bother to keep control so as to protect wildlife. And the parks themselves are more crowded now as the human population explodes in this country, and newcomers are not necessarily aware of how we expect people to care for nature.

Captured looking straight down from a viewing platform, with the illusion the ducks are swimming amongst some clouds.
Yesterday while running errands we decided to stop at a little cove where salt water meets fresh. Kipp pulled over and shimmied my big lens into the car window. We watched the mallards play:)

I have been spending some late afternoon, early evening time in a pretty secluded spot on the Lake - bugs of many kinds all over me - trying to locate the Pied-billed Grebe, and watching for any other activity. If one sits still enough, long enough, something is bound to happen…
These very young Wood Ducks ambled onshore and were completely oblivious to me, at least initially. The female with them stayed on the water in a supervisory capacity. Eventually a few of them noticed me, and I slowly brought up my camera while going from sitting to lying down, all in an effort not to spook them. The little photo bomber in the bottom right seemed full of beans, and they stayed for a couple of minutes, before re-entering the water.
There are often three or four sets of Wood Duck young on the water at this time of the year. I especially enjoyed the brief interaction with these ones as I had to misfortune to see a similarly-young duck caught by a Snapping Turtle a couple of weeks ago. Initially I didn’t understand the screaming and thrashing, but with binoculars I ended up figuring it out. It took a while to get that out of my head - I know predation is all around in natural settings, but that was a really unpleasant experience. These guys - who I know may suffer the same fate - cheered me up for the few minutes they were there.
Unlike most waterfowl, Mottled Ducks (Anas fulvigula) are almost never seen in large flocks, generally traveling in pairs or small groups. Draining and destruction of marshland attributed mostly to agricultural and urban development, have raised concerns about the status of these wetland habitats and the wildlife that depend on them. Also, a major threat to their survival is the release of numerous pet Mallards in Florida and elsewhere in southeast; these feral birds interbreed with Mottled Ducks, diluting the wild population of the latter. The complete hybridization could result in the extinction of the Florida Mottled Duck, which is a defining member of the unique suite of species characteristic of south Florida’s prairie ecosystem. The only couple I met on a recent walk who were content with the weather...personally I thought they were quackers...

Mr Duck following Mrs Duck around the yard. Perhaps they're looking for some new real estate away from the crowds at the lake to raise a new family?
My wife wanted ducks for our pond. So I bought a couple ducklings and raised them. Now they are a beautiful addition to our pond.
These birds are really fun to watch and to photograph. They are a bit skittish, but that makes them seek out dark corners and circle around warily, which leads to neat poses and behaviours. The colours area challenges in almost any light. One of the other great things about them, that escapes photography, is the neat sounds they make, from the cries to the subtle buzzing - which the open-mouthed male here was doing as he circled behind the female.
