This characteristic bridge crosses the Rio di Palazzo connecting, with a double passage, the Palazzo Ducale to the Prigioni Nuove.

At the time of the Serenissima, it served as a passage for the inmates from the aforementioned prisons to the offices of the Inquisitors of State to be tried.

The prisoners, crossing it, sighed before the prospect of seeing the outside world for the last time.

From this tradition the name: the Bridge of Sighs.

It was built in Istrian stone, baroque style, and was built at the beginning of the 17th century on a project by the architect Antonio Contin by order of the doge Marino Grimani, whose coat of arms is carved on it.

Vigevano's main attraction is one of the finest piazzas in Italy, the Piazza Ducale, an elongated rectangle that is almost in the ideal proportions 1:3 advocated by the architectural theorist Antonio Filarete[citation needed], which is also said to have been laid out by Bramante, and was certainly built for Ludovico il Moro, starting in 1492-93 and completed in record time, unusual for early Renaissance town planning.

Cathedral

In the 17th century one end of the Piazza Ducale was enclosed by the concave Baroque façade of the Cathedral, cleverly adjusted to bring the ancient duomo into a line perpendicular to the axis of the piazza and centered on it.The Cathedral was begun in 1532 under Duke Francesco II, who commissioned the design to Antonio da Lonate. The edifice was completed in 1606.

Vigevano is a town and comune in the province of Pavia, Lombardy in northern Italy. An historic art town, it is also renowned for shoemaking and is one of the main centres of Lomellina, a rice-growing agricultural district.

The Piazza Ducale of Vigevano is a large Renaissance-style square. Its construction began in 1492 at the behest of Ludovico il Moro as an antechamber of the Castle and was completed in 1494. 134 meters long and 48 wide, it is built on three sides (the fourth is occupied by the Cathedral Church of Sant'Ambrogio) with homogeneous buildings with uniform façade and arcades surrounding a forum that follows the Roman model described by Vitruvius.
