Here a southbound Detroit Toledo & Ironton freight headed for Cincinnati is rolling through Carleton, Michigan on 8-23-80. The head end is passing a signal mounted on one of the concrete electric catenary supports complete with a DT&I embossed cast cabinet door.
Cincinnati bound Detroit Toledo and Ironton GP40 404 leads two sisters past the classic DT&I cast signal box on the vertical concrete catenary support, complete with a color position light head above.
Ohh . . . I wish this were still in place here in Carleton, Michigan looking back to November 15, 1975.
A southbound DT&I train running on the B&O's Toledo sub, clatters across the diamond with the Akron, Canton & Youngstown and by CG Tower on the south side of Columbus Grove.
The DT&I ran via the B&O from the south side of Leipsic to the north side of Lima, which the Indiana & Ohio still does to this day. The original DT&I main is out of view to the right, behind the tower. The rails of the AC&Y can be seen in the distance to the left of the tower. The track coming off the main just in front of the lead locomotive was Columbus Grove siding, which was taken out of service in the early to mid-80's.
Today only the B&O main still exists here, now under CSX, with no trace of either the DT&I or AC&Y left. Wally Mattes photo.

Cinci bound out of the Motor City (Schaefer Yd.) we find the Detroit Toledo & Ironton's new piggyback service "Railblazer" headed for Flat Rock, Michigan. There at the yard a quick change for a fresh crew for the trip south through Ohio on August 19, 1981.

Back onto the DT&I at the appropriately named DT&I Jct. I&O 2134 leads a short local back into Ford Park Yard.

I&O 4432 heads down the former DT&I tracks and passes the distant signals (D) for the Hamler interlocking at Hamler, Ohio.
Here is a photo of DT&I Jct. located just outside of Lima, Ohio on August 31st, 2022. The IORY ends here at right and merges into the CSX Toledo Subdivision. Interlocking is still protected by these CPL's, and I was even able to get an old whistle post in the shot.

Here is a closer look at the semaphore signal in Springfield, OH. As you can see the blade has seen better days. Decades of exposure to the elements and lack of maintenance have pretty much taken its toll. Since it's a fixed semaphore, no mechanical parts are needed. It may not be as pretty as the blades in New Mexico, but a blade's a blade, and the I&O are lucky to have them.
