A rather extremely literal interpretation of one of the most important and favorite books I read after moving west.
The wind will not stop. Gusts of sand swirl around me, stinging my face. But there is still too much to see and marvel at, the world very much alive in the bright light and wind, exultant with the fever of spring, the delight of morning. Scrolling on, it seems to me that the strangeness and wonder of experience are emphasized here, in the desert, by the comparative sparsity of flora and fauna; life not crowded upon life as in other places but scattered abroad in spareness and simplicity, with a generous gift of space for each herb and bush and tree, each stem of grass, so that the living organism stands out bold and brave and vivid against the lifeless sand and barren rock. The extreme clarity of the desert light is equaled by the extreme individuation of desert life forms. Love flowers best in openness and freedom.

The 89th @dailyshoot assignment was about book titles. This is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the title of the first part of Tolkien's epic The Lord of the Rings. :-)
I read the book The Ultimate Accidental Housewife by Julie Edelman and she recommends vinegar, a spray bottle, and a microfiber cloth as essential cleaning tools. 2/12/10

An old favourite by the German writer. Courts controversy with its dark plot, and the repulsively detailed descriptions of the stenches, reeks and stinks of 18th-century France. But then it also evokes the amazingly beautiful odours, scents and fragrances needed for the most attractive perfumes.
Naming sign and safety signs at Bilgola Rockpool, NSW. As well as dining and dogs, fishing is also banned at this ocean pool. Falling rocks have caused problems for patrons of this pool in the past. The netting against the cliff is a safety measure. The wire fence makes a useful community billboard. (My ref: DS89/June 2005)

"Under the Dome" by Stephen King. I'm not really a Stephen King fan actually, but Under the Dome was one of the first books I read on my Kindle and it was certainly a page turner.

The Willard Suitcase Exhibit
Quite a while ago I came upon the Willard Suitcase Exhibit online and found it disconcerting, yet fascinating. While there is a traveling exhibit one can see at many venues across the US, the online exhibit of The Lives They Left Behind ~ Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic, certainly gives you a good idea of what it is all about.
Basically, the Willard Asylum/Willard Psychiatric Center operated in some form from 1869 ~ 1995, when its doors were closed and several staff members and a museum curator worked to save artifacts left behind. Almost 400 suitcases were found labeled and alphabetized ~ untouched for years ~ the suitcases were moved to a NY State Museum's warehouse where they were later examined more closely and researched further resulting in a major exhibition in 2004 at the NY State Museum. The researchers were able to match residents of the asylum with their specific belongings and memorialize their lives in a respectful way.
It is interesting to note that over 50,000 patients were admitted to Willard over the years ~ nearly half of those patients died there

Took Dailyshoot's theme today,
"#ds89 Continuing the Friday fun theme, make a photo that goes with the title of a book you've read." and based my photo on Daniel Levitin's book, "This is Your Brain on Music".
Levitin went from being an audio-engineer to a neuro-scientist, and based this book on the marrying of the two fields, explaining why our brain reacts to music in the way that it does.
In honor of Charles Darwin's birth (he would have been 201 today), here's "The Descent of Man." Thanks to Philip for being the descending man. Climbing down a ladder like that is not easy. He also threw himself off of it a few times in the name of art and science.

Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. This book, dealing with medical ethics, personal morality and the struggles of caring for a disabled child, is a tough read for any parent. I bought my first orchid yesterday and decided it symbolizes Picoult's story. Caring for these delicate plants requires commitment, knowledge and skill but reaps huge rewards.
