The Daily Shoot #ds192 - Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it.

Our first stop on our metro mission was a farmer's market at the Mission stop on the LA Gold Line.

This bike leaning against a tree was the first thing that caught my eye.

The blue was so bold, I had to mute the rest of the color.

Topic: Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it. Crop if needed.

It needed to be something more or less 1:1 just hanging in the picture in my mind. I got to do the assignment only in the evening, so went for an easy one. How to do a shot with something matching a square frame in the evening? During daylight I'd go for extremely shallow depth of field. In the evening I went for reducing the light spillover from the subject to background. Two things are needed:

1. controlled light--I used bespoke barn doors (two pieces of black foam)

2. elimination of ambient light--a simplification, but working in most cases is that you control ambient by shutter speed. Went for 1/1000s, and used High-Speed Sync on the flash.

wait, there is a couple more:

3. light has to be close to the subject!!! if you move it away, you'll lose the contrast between the shade and the light.

4. no reflector of any kind behind your subject. if you place one, it'll bounce some of the light to the thing that's holding the subject, in this case the lower arm. and we don't want that.

Strobist: one SB900 at 1/64 power camera left zoomed to 200mm, through home-made barn doors. That's it--one light solution :) Triggered by a non-contributing camera built-in controller.

Today's assignment instantly reminded me of this old children's toy. I can remember our daughter eagerly playing with this wooden box when she was small. She kept patiently trying to work out which peg fitted into which hole. And what a sense of achievement every time she managed to get one in. It soon got too boring, though, when she had memorized it all.

What about the square peg students in schools that only offer round holes? Or teachers, for that matter, who themselves don't fit in the accepted moulds? Will the squares be forced to round their edges, or will holes of varying shapes and sizes be allowed?

Daily Shoot #192: "Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it. Crop if needed."

Today was a lovely day.

I took personal leave and played the role of "Daddy" for Sophie's 2nd grade field trip to a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in the Oregon wilderness. It was a wonderful experience with my sweet daughter and her friends but, interestingly, convinced me that I am quite rightly a teacher of 5th graders rather than 2nd.

On the way home after school, we stopped to get milk shakes and enjoy brilliant sun of the approaching summer. At the edge of the parking lot there was a block of cement...possibly a foundation for some future structure. My two youngest Cosands ran and climbed up on it in an impromptu hybrid of King of the Mountain and full-contact ballet.

Of the dozen or so photos I managed to fire off, this was my favorite. Not completely crisp in focus, but it so nicely captures Elijah and Sophie and the wonderful, carefree energy they can exude. Moments like this remind me how blessed I am to be a daddy.

Like I said, it was a lovely day.

With a tax refund check in hand from adjustment in my favor from 2008 (kind of like drawing Community Chest, but it was more than $20...) I ordered from Amazon the Canon 300mm f/4 L lens, along with the standard UV filter for protection.

I got the filter in a day, just need the lens. It should be here Friday.

A couple of days late, but totally a fit for Daily Shoot's challenge #192: "Lose the rectangle today. Make a photograph with a square (1:1) aspect ratio and post it. Crop if needed"

@5by5 and I saw this guy on Centennial Campus on a walk Friday afternoon. I think it's a black rat snake.

Sometimes you've got to turn that square on its side to find it! And, in case you didn't know, here's how to drive in a 'round-about' ... we've got a few in our town! Naples, FL

This dress was a steal - only $10! But the back was less than ideal, since it was empty. So I filled it in with some lace.

PS: I took a walk to one of the nearby parks because I saw a well I thought of taking the picture from for today's assignment, but when I got there it really didn't look like what I had in mind.

I got myself walking around the park thinking about what I could possibly shoot that would look right on a 1:1 crop ratio.

And then I remembered the chess tables on the other side of the park. I thought of playing with the diagonals to make it a little bit more interesting, and then a 'little' postprocessing by increasing blacks and shadows.

This little guy was watching my dad and I golf. You notice he's hiding his little white tail that could be mistaken for a golf ball.

Rushed and definitely not my favorite shot, but I managed to stay out of the reflection. ;)

I spent just over 4 hours today out in the light rain and cool air. It was nice to put on the fire to get a bit warmer when I got home.

Saw this on the sidewalk next to Beta Bridge.

My niece was visiting today and I got her to sit still long enough for this shot! She's such a cutie!

Still figuring out my workflow for participating in Daily Shoot. Hopefully this will get to Twitter and to Flickr alright.

I got the new Lumix in today, and shot a few things this evening. Loving the new camera -- it's a *huge* step up from what I've been using to date.

This is tonight's dinner salad. We eat with a group from our church most Wednesdays, and one of our number always makes terrific salads. I was delighted to have something healthy to counteract the ludicrous amount of Frito Pie I ate.

I'm planning to post more on Flickr for a while. I won't be as quite as selective as I have been in the past, but want to just get back into the habit of taking pictures, and thought doing the Daily Shoot would be a good way to do it.

This is a sad one: There was a dead bird in front of the backdoor today.

Processing: I only changed back and white point (drastically, though: to 32% and 57% resp.)

I didn't make the best use of the 1:1 ratio here. I took some photos I liked today, but the theme just wasn't working for me. But here it is.

My peonies are getting ready to bloom. As usual, the ants are pretty excited about it :-). Garden lore has it that peonies require the activity of ants in order to blossom. Apparently this is not true - they're only there to feed on the sweet juice of the waxy coating. I wish I'd been able to use my macro lens for this shot to get in really close, but unfortunately, movement and macro don't mix.

Circle within a square, some movement to give me the emotion of photography

"It's Memorial Day in the U.S. Make a photo that symbolizes today and what it means to you."

As I'm not in the U.S... I focused on "what today symbolizes...". Today's big thing was starting a qaiku network for processing "Connectivism and Connective Knowledge" #CCK10 course in Finnish as #CCK10fi.

- #CCK10fi represents to me a continuum of understanding cultural heritages and building capacities required for the networked era based on them. That could also be a way to say what Memorial Day themes mean to me - gratitude, tradition, future and faith.

(The pic which became #CCK10fi logo is modified from my @dailyshoot #ds192.)

I actually love working in a 1x1 aspect but I find most people don't feel as comfortable with it, so I tend to stick with 2x3 or 4x5.

Another self portrait in the 'loosing things' series, earlier photos posted in comment . The flash is the intended loose in this picture, the hair is just a bonus. Left to do is no lens, no shirt, no me (will be a bit difficult) and perhaps no wall.
