Another beautiful evening for a drone flight. As you can tell we're still in winter, regardless of the calendar.
Thinking about my old friend the Great Salt Lake. So much of this winter’s runoff will be headed here in the end. I’ve heard reports that the south end of the lake is up as much as 4 or 5 feet already!
One of the things I love about living where I do is the view of the mountains to the east and the west. Not bad! And, yes, you can see the rooftop of my house down there on the right.
I keep seeing stories about Gunlock State Park and the beautiful falls. I love them so much! When you go, don’t forget to visit the reservoir itself. There’s a newly improved campground and great places to go kayaking, paddle boarding or fishing. It’s a great way to spend the day or the weekend. And whatever you do this Memorial Day weekend, have a great one! Please be safe out there!
Calm is a state that begins within, but it’s highly influenced by external factors. Be mindful of the power of those influences to better preserve the calm. They can’t always be changed but even acknowledging them improve our state of mind.
I estimate from Google maps that this causeway is between four and five miles long as it stretches across the bay. Sadly, it’s gated off but I imagine it would be quite the drive!
Captured off shore from Love Beach, Bahamas with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone.
Shot was captured in windy & less than ideal weather but, this is where I believe the DJI drones really shine.
Do these fins of rock look like they belong to giant, subterranean fish? I’m imagining a school of giant, stone fish swimming across the desert, just under the surface of the sand.
No trip to the Spiral Jetty is complete without a top down shot. I wish I had caught some people out walking on it to show the scale. The jetty is 15 feet wide and 1500 feet long and looks even more impressive in person.
A day at the lake. A chance to step away from the stress of life and relax. Basically, the antidote for daily burnout.
As blue hour began and the Jetty dropped into shadow, the Great Salt Lake began to show off. The still evening made the surface just like glass.
A parting shot from the Spiral Jetty. I’ll just close this series out by saying how grateful I am for vistas like this that remind me how much beauty there is in the world. Have a great weekend everyone!
Good morning to the Great Salt Lake and the wonderful spring runoff that’s pouring in! And good morning to all of you!
The red rock in Red Cliffs National Conservation Area literally changes color as the sun gets low in the sky.
One more throwback shot from the Great Salt Lake to finish off the week. I hope everyone (in the US at least) enjoys a great Memorial Day weekend!
The Henry’s Fork River is so clear and beautiful as it flows from its headwaters at Big Springs to Island Park Reservoir! Visitors can float the river in kayaks or tubes and appreciate its beauty in close. You can often spot huge trout and moose along the way.

One of my favorite dirt roads because of the way it winds along the bank of the reservoir and for the way forest comes right up to the edge of the road. Just a sliver of human influence running through the wild.
I took a trip with with my fellow drone guy, @pfunk_photography. We wanted to capture a crazy phenomenon caused by all of the storms this winter. What you’re looking at isn’t the Great Salt Lake or a lake at all. It’s the Bonneville Salt Flats covered by as much as a foot and a half of water! And yes, those are paddle boarders down there on the surface. I’ve seen a little water on the salt flats before but I’ve never seen them covered like this! So much water! Fans of Speed Week are going to be really disappointed this year. But we’ve got a hot new paddle boarding destination!

I first visited the Spiral Jetty in the spring of 2017. The lakeshore was about 100 yards from the Jetty at the time. This spring, due to drought, the edge of the lake is at least a half mile away. But the area is still stunning.
The area pictured here is above 10,000 feet in elevation and currently buried in very deep snow. But warmth and rebirth are coming. Green will soon return to the landscape.
No dramatic lighting, but camping out over the weekend was greener than I’ve seen in years. How would you like to spend the night next to that dirt track?
Last week, I had the pleasure of spending Thanksgiving surrounded by family and as a bonus I was about 10 minutes down the road from this beautiful scene.
Late day sun and long shadows fall on the road to the Salt Flats. With all of the water, the road has become a causeway out into the middle of an impromptu lake.
The short, dark days of winter are slowly lengthening as the land prepares to emerge from the winter snows.
In Utah, pick any direction and drive. You’ll run into mountains, lakes, red rock, desert and endless skies. It’s always an adventure!
One of my favorite top down shots from the past year. Today marks my 700th post since I started sharing my work on Instagram. Just wanted to take a moment to thank each of you on every platform for being so supportive, encouraging and inspiring over the years!
This shot visualizes life in Northern Utah lately. A bit of sun, plenty of clouds and a lot of snow!
To do lists grow very long this time of year. Sometimes I feel like I’m just running around checking all the boxes of the season. I have to remind myself to step back, take a breath and enjoy the beauty of the world around me. Ah, that feels better!

Everyone loves long exposure shots of waterfalls that make the flowing water look smooth and beautiful. Those shots are much harder from the air because you don’t have the stability of a tripod. Leave the shutter open too long and everything is blurry instead of just the water. But I gave it a try with an ND filter and some blue hour light. I’m pretty happy with the result.
