Making one of several trips per day from the Allentown, PA, yards, to Bethlehem Steel to interchange with PBNE is Conrail's "Saucon Drill." A mix of steel cars, coke hoppers, flats, and gondolas, would bang across the ex Reading Mainline, (I'm standing next to), and disappear of into "mill country". This was my favorite job to catch when visiting the Allentown area. A short haul monster local at it's best!

My group is a mix of nationalities.

We train different things, all the time.

Today was a calm day. I appointed our Mexican colleague to drill sergeant.

Outdoors, of course.

We all did the Chupacabra field march.

I think he pulled our legs.

It was fun though.

Strobist/Technical info:

The scene was illuminated by two LED light panels placed 90° CL/CR and by a single Nikon SB900 speedlight placed 45°CL between the LED and the camera. The SB900 was fired in Manual mode @ ¼ power through a 24" x 24" soft box. It was triggered by two PocketWizard Plus X triggers.

Those are the cogwheel teeth of an old "Egg beater drill", so called because it reminds of the kitchen ustensile for beating eggs.

This model is of the French "Peugeot Frères" brand of tools, existing since 1810 and still active.

By mounting the crank on the one or the other position, you could engage either the inner or the outer flat cogwheel, and hence chose higher or lower speed.

An odd sight for sure to see a NJ Transit GP40 shoving into an industrial spur. C&D RP-2 drills the spur for Jan Global Transport Solutions in Dover, NJ, with leased NJ Transit GP40-2 #4302 (1/4/24).

# Flickr Friday, # point, Spikey things, abused drill, just wondering what the user did before with this drill.

At least it was used to the end, to make a small hole bigger

All of the heavy equipment is electrically powered to prevent the build up of exhaust fumes. The haze is due to water vapour and dust in the air after drilling.

This was approx 2 miles in from the mine entrance and 800 feet down.

The smaller of the 2 drill vices I have.

The Lake State's Port Huron switcher is drilling boxcars in a couple tracks at the Domtar Port Huron plant. Earlier in August, 2020 Domtar announced they'd be closing this plant "over the next four to six months". The loss of 200 jobs will be painful for the local economy and this plant is also the biggest customer on this branch that LSRC took over switching operations from CN. I've been wanting to get over there for several years ever since LSRC took over but that news jumped this trip up my "list" considerably. Port Huron, MI 8/31/2020

The specifications for barbed wire are: strand wire diameter : 2.5mm - 3.0mm; barb wire diameter 1.5mm - 2.0mm; barb spacing : 5.0cm - 10cm.

I wonder how many barbs there are in the miles of barbed wire fencing in Australia?

It is said that if you drill deep enough from America, you will surface in China.

Well, apparently if you drill deep enough from Japan, you will surface in San Francisco . . .
