Mitten in der Nordoberpfalz ragt er aus der Landschaft: Der 83 Meter hohe Bohrturm des Kontinentalen Tiefbohrprogramms. Hier wurde zwischen 1987 und 1995 mehrere Bohrversuche unternommen um neue Erkenntnisse über die Erdkruste zu erfahren. Die Hauptbohrung begann im September 1990 und wurde im Oktober 1994 bei einer Tiefe von 9.101 Metern beendet. In Europa ist es die tiefste Bohrung, weltweit steht es nach der Kola-Bohrung auf Platz 2.
Drilling Hole
In mid of the north of Upper Palatinate a tower sticks out of the countryside. The drilling tower of the Continental Deep Drilling Programme is 83 meters tall. Between 1987 and 1995 several trials of drilling were made to get new findings about the earth's crust. The main drilling hole began in September 1990 and ended in Oktober 1994 in a depth of 9.101 meters. This hole is the deepest in Europe, worldwide on second place after the Kola Superdeep Borehole.
For today's get away, a visit to Silverton, a town of around 50 people in the far west of New South Wales. The first time I visited Silverton this street was filled with double parked tourist coaches; my photo was a disaster. The next time I made it my business to be there before the coaches arrived, and even before the hotel opened.
In 1875, two men drilling a well south of the town site hit a lode of silver. Miners flooded in and Silverton was born. By 1890 the town had 3,000 inhabitants, but the high grade ore was soon depleted, and the population drifted away. Most people moved to nearby Broken Hill where an even richer silver-lead-zinc ore body was discovered.
There is a lot more to Silverton than this iconic street. There is a community of artists, mostly attracted by the colour of the country and the vibrant light. There are museums, historic buildings, ruins of houses and a church, several restaurants and some friendly donkeys who will accept handouts from anybody willing to feed them.
The tourist coaches bring visitors to have a beer at the iconic pub, it's been in quite a few movies and commercials, and then turn them loose to buy souvenirs and food from the local businesses.

The construction, in 1765, of the École Militaire designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, was the first step toward the Champ de Mars in its present form. Grounds for military drills were originally planned for an area south of the school, the current location of the place de Fontenoy. The choice to build an esplanade to the north of the school led to the erection of the noble facade which today encloses the Champ de Mars.

Top of the firefighters' drill tower in my village. Firefighters do their job here on a voluntary basis. The job can be rather diverse as there is no police station in the village.

masonry drill bits differ from normal drill bits in that they have a hardened cutting tip (usually tungsten carbide) that is used to chip/grind hard materials such as masonry, brick or stone rather than cut through the material. The deeply fluted spiral shape that of the bit helps to remove dust and debris from the hole that is formed. Masonry bits are tippically used in hammer drills that use a combination of percussion and rotation to create a hole of the desired dimension

I am amazed the we (in the USA) still use the imperial measurement system.
The image is about 4.5 cm (1.75 inches) on the long edge.
Y127 drills a cut of autoracks for the Amports dock, hidden behind the bridge to the left. With CSX reinstating a Detroit to Curtis Bay autorack train, this scene has become a daily, routine occurence. Something i have not been familiar with since 2019.
