“Don't fail to do your stuff
With a little powder and a puff
Keep young and beautiful if you want to be loved”
Lyrics from “Keep Young and Beautiful” (1933) written by Al Dubin and Harry Warren.
In the Roaring 20s and Sleek 30s, when the idea of women wearing makeup really took off comercially, you would expect to find at least one power puff on a young Flapper’s dressing table. Used for the application of powder, historically, powder puffs have been made of very fine down feathers, cotton or fine fleece. In modern times synthetic materials are widely used for powder puffs. In addition to softness, an important characteristic of powder puffs is their ability to hold powder. This powder puff from the 1920s has a back of orange satin in the shape of a rose, complete with two leaves, and is attached to a long handle wrapped in matching orange satin. The vibrant colour and romantic style of this powder puff represent the vivacity as well as femininity Flappers of the 1920s were known for.
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 24th of March is "orange colour". This orange satin powder puff is a recent acquisition of mine, having been in my possession for less than a month. Being new for me, it seemed the perfect choice for the theme for this week. It is surrounded by pieces of my dressing table silver including perfume bottles, powder pots, a nail buffer, perfume corkscrew, button hook and nail file. I hope you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.

This is the detail of a sterling silver clothes brush made in Birmingham in 1903 and is just one piece out of a very substantial dressing table set that includes hairbrushes, mirrors, a looking glass, a tray, a comb, clothes brushes, perfume bottles, a glove hook, a perfume bottle opener, a boot hook, a shoe horn, a manicure set, powder pots, a needle case, an appointment book, a miniature Bible, a hair tidy, a hatpin container, an appointment book and even a letter opener, all of which belonged to one of my Great, Great Aunts. All of them feature elegant and ornate repoussé work of a very high standard. Each item depicts a beautiful Art Nouveau maiden in profile with long flowing tresses that twist and curl about her as she stands amid some sunflowers, plucking petals from a flower in that “he loves me… he loves me not” fashion. This style of design is typical of the curvilinear floral and female motifs so popular during the Art Nouveau period, epitomised by artists like Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt. As a child, I called the Art Nouveau lady on these pieces, Clytie, after the Greek mythological legend of Clytie the sea nymph who fell in love with Apollo and was transformed into a sunflower.
The theme for the 25th of May for “Smile on Saturday” is “piece of an artpiece”. I have always thought these silver backed pieces, made by the Birmingham silversmiths Levi and Salaman in 1903, are elegant examples of the silversmiths’ art. I hope that you will agree with. The clothes brush features a pad of boar bristles which were stiff enough to brush the many different outfits worn by an Edwardian lady of fashion of the time, as my Great, Great Aunt was.
This clothes brush is hallmarked with the initials “L.&S.” which are the initials for the silversmiths Levi and Salaman. Founded in 1870 by Phineas Harris Levi in partnership with Joseph Wolff Salaman the two men established a silversmiths firm. They later became proprietors of the Potosi Silver Company in 1878. The firm became Levi and Salaman in the early Twentieth Century and became Levi and Salaman Ltd. in 1910. In 1921 the firm was amalgamated into Barker Brothers Silversmiths Limited.
I'm sure a lot of people say that about me. :)
It's true, though, when I'm photographing tiny things like these. The process drives me crazy sometimes, because I can be clumsy, but it's also fun. These tiny 'perfume bottles' are actually created from glass beads and gold-coloured spacer beads. Not by me, I hasten to add!
The day of her wedding dawned sunny and bright, flooding her dressing room as she walked in. Around her, the familiar colours, shapes and smells of her life up until now comforted her: her beloved dressing table upon which stood her silver backed brushes, comb and mirror and her bottles of scent, the paintings of her ancestors smiling beatifically down upon her, their features as familiar to her as if they lived now rather than a hundred or two hundred years ago. And yet, there were differences today too. Her bridal bouquet of white Madonna lilies lay on the floral sofa, whilst her beloved copy of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and her long gloves sat atop her cascading, frothy London lace wedding veil as it tumbled down from its stand and cascaded down the front of her dressing table and over her chair. As the daughter of a squire, she may leave her family home a miss of the manor, but she will return the mistress of another as she marries a local member of the landed gentry. Her only hope is that she is marrying as well, and as happily, as her favourite heroine, Elizabeth Bennett.
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 19th of October is “view the V”, a theme where it is required to take a photo where something beginning with the letter v should be the main subject of the picture. I have opted for the word and subject “veil”. Anyone who follows my photostream knows that I love and collect 1:12 size miniatures which I photograph in realistic scenes. The artifice of recreating in minute detail items in 1:12 scale always amazes me, and it’s amazing how the eye can be fooled. I have created such a scene here, where everything is comes from my 1:12 miniatures collection. The veil is in reality a dainty piece of London made lace given to me by a friend. I felt that the dainty flowers that run along the edge of the lace would sit nicely atop a small bride's head. What was funny was that when I draped it over the wooden hat stand, the lace came to sit like this around the head of the stand. It seemed perfect, almost like it wanted to be photographed that way, and I obliged. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
Fun things to look for in this tableau in addition to the veil include:
The silver dressing table set on the dressing table, consisting of mirror, brushes, a comb and a lidded powder pot has been made by Warwick Miniatures in Ireland, who are well known for the quality and detail applied to their pieces. The selection of sparkling perfume bottles, are handmade by an English artisan for the Little Green Workshop. Made of cut coloured crystals set in a gilt metal frames or using vintage cut glass beads they look so elegant and terribly luxurious. The vase of flowers has been made by the Falcon Company, who specialise in high quality, realistic 1:12 miniatures, and are well known for their floral arrangements. The gilded Rococo style vase is a hand painted miniature by artisan Rachael Munday.
The elbow length white evening gloves on the seat of the chair are artisan pieces made of kid leather. I acquired these from a high street dolls house specialist when I was a teenager. Amazingly, they have never been lost in any of the moves that they have made over the years are still pristinely clean.
The dressing table, which is actually a marriage piece (two separate pieces made into one) I acquired from Kathleen Knight’s Doll House Shop in the United Kingdom.
The dressing table chair did not come with the dressing table, although it does match nicely. Upholstered in a very fine pink satin, it was made by the high-end dolls’ house miniature furniture manufacturer, Bespaq.
The floral sofa and salon chair is part of a Marie Antoinette suite made by the high-end miniature furniture maker, Creal. The bridal bouquet on the seat of the sofa is a handmade artisan piece by an unknown creator comes from Kathleen Knight’s Doll House Shop.
The wallpaper is a 1:12 size version of an Eighteenth Century pattern. The paintings on the wall come from Marie Makes Miniatures in the United Kingdom.
The Blue King and Queen are hosting a ball for their daughter, the Princess Bluebell. They are hoping that their beautiful daughter will catch the eye and the heart of their guest of honour, the Prince of the Peacocks, with her natural charm and beauty. However just to be sure, the Blue Queen is giving her daughter some last minute instructions in her blue boudoir whilst her lady in waiting helps dress Princess Bluebell in her pale blue ballgown.
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 7th of May is “Blue for You – ME 2022” which is in honour of ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day which happens to fall on May 12th. May the 12th was chosen as it coincided with the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale became chronically ill in her mid-thirties after returning from the Crimean War; the M.E.-like illness often left her bedridden during the last 50 years of her life.
As the subject for “Smile on Saturday” this week was open to personal choice but required a lot of blue, I thought I would stick with tradition and submit a Playmobil tableau as I did for the theme last year and the year before. One of the wonderful things that attract people, young and old alike, to Playmobil is their vibrant colour. I hope you like my choice of subject for the theme, and that it makes you smile.
Playmobil is a line of toys produced by the Brandstätter Group, headquartered in Zirndorf, Germany. Production began in 1974. Playmobil began to be sold worldwide in 1975, and by 2009, approximately 2.2 billion Playmobil figures had been sold. The signature Playmobil toy is a 7.5 cm tall human figure with a particular smiling face. A wide range of accessories, buildings and vehicles, as well as many sorts of animals, are also part of the Playmobil line. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. New products and product lines developed by a 50-strong development team are introduced frequently, and older sets are discontinued. Promotional and one-off products are sometimes produced in very limited quantities. These practices have helped give rise to a sizeable community of collectors.
I have a red bracelet with large stones that I keep in a cut glass bowl. It always catches my eye because the reflection from the window light makes it bounce back red.
