Dropping downgrade from Hyde Park into London, Ontario we find CP Rail division hotshot train #904 behind SD40 5511 and M636 4722 on January 9, 1977. This was my first sighting and photograph of the dreaded "ditchlights" as mandated by the Canadian Transportation Agency, I was horified and have hated them ever since . . . .
that my 'wonderful' neighbor planted over 12 years ago is still standing... thankfully we've been lucky that it hasn't come up in our garden lately and if it does, I'm quick to pull it out by the roots...

Just like in San Francisco 400 miles to the south, wildfire smoke also descended on Gold Beach yesterday. This was taken at 10 a.m. on what would have otherwise been a bright sunny day. It was so dark that I needed the lights on in the middle of the day. I believe the closest fire to me is about 100 miles southeast.
After everything that has been happening this year, somehow it is this orange sky of doom that really is getting to me. When you smell smoke and see the sky is the wrong color and you can't find the sun anymore, there is just an instinctual visceral response of profound dread.
Mother Nature is burning.
Blanca's fur smells of smoke.

UP's twice-weekly turn to Duluth is a nice catch but it comes back to Superior during mid-day harsh lighting. The clean units were a worthy target.
After noting that some of my recent images are getting the dreaded sameness, I felt it is time to rework an older image to keep things fresh :)

Wapiti dreads....hard to believe it's already that time of year when the bull elk begin to shed their velvet and prepare for the rut. I was fortunate enough to come across this guy high up on the tundra and spent some time watching him try to rub the velvet off.
I receive a lot of questions about whether it’s painful for the elk to shed their velvet. Research suggests that the process is not actually painful. Shedding velvet begins because the elk’s blood supply has dropped off to this part of the body, so the tissues are naturally disintegrating.

Shot on August 14, this photo shows smoke pouring off the West Mountain slope on Lake Cascade in western Idaho. As the fire spread, It completely obscured much of this scene.

Golden Lane Estate Car Park, London, England
A new image this one, I have seen this car park many of time from other togs over on Instagram but never knew exactly where it was. When I eventually found out where it was I had realised that I had only passed by it loads of time in previous visits to the Barbican Estate, just goes to show that sometimes the best things can be right under your nose without you realising it!
This is a really gritty and sinister feeling car park, it was a blazing hot day as you can see from the light beaming down through the sky lights but you can also see still how dark it is down here, I bet this place would be very different at night although would make some pretty cool photos I am sure!
