I don't entirely recall where the .380 came from, but I've kept it around because it offers an excuse to maybe someday invest in a Walther PPK.
An online sporting goods company with whom I placed an order sent the box of 9mm as a "surprise gift." I don't have a use for 9mm ammunition, but I suppose they figured since 9mm is the most popular ammunition in the US that there's a good chance their customers can use it. O' course, now I have a legitimate reason to get a Glock.
The .38 Special was a widely used and effective cartridge for over a hundred years, so when it was time to invest in a revolver for farm & ranch use (under the advisement of local law enforcement, as a matter of fact), I elected to go with this classic cartridge. Most firearms enthusiasts would recommend the .357 magnum caliber over the "old fashioned" .38 Special because a .357 firearm can use both .38 Special ammunition and the more powerful .357. But if you've ever watched an old movie (anything made before 1960... or maybe 1970) you know that pretty much everybody carried a .38 "snubbie" in their suitcoat pocket back in the day, so the "retro cool factor" won out over "modern practicality."
Does the .44 magnum need an explanation? Well, does it, punk?
Short of a true "double rifle" chambered in .450 Nitro caliber, the .375 Holland & Holland belted magnum is about as "classic safari style" as one can get, and it pairs well with either a pith helmet or a gin & tonic.
