Ireland
From my time in Ireland last November. I was walking with my friend to explore an abandoned monastery, we had no plan of shooting anything but I began taking pictures with him leading the way down the hill. When I got settled back at home I started to turn one of the random images into a concept. It’s a very different way to work for me when usually I have a concept first but none the less I’m happy with the result. Sometimes the destination is unknown but if you go with your instincts you’ll find what you didn’t know you were looking for.
Models: Lorenzo Donvito, Melanie Lane and yours truly.
First of all a special thanks to my dear friends who so graciously allowed me to get them naked with me in a creepy abandoned place for art. That’s what I call true friendship!
For this image I imagined an enormous building of thousands of rooms each with a person naked and so deeply in solitude that they had no idea anyone else was in rooms next to theirs. It would just take a simple person to recognize this and walk into another’s room and the chain effect would happen. Soon the rooms would be filled with people identifying with each other.
I guess I've been thinking a bit about solitude, loneliness and how tragedy can spark hope. For a lot of us it feels like a never ending one-way street, but there's always a dichotomy or rather the other side of the same coin. There's no hope without loss or pain without love.
We live in an age where supposed connection is all abundant but where technology and this virtual reality is in front of our faces more than the real world around us. It's easy to rely on our phones and computers when we are bored or have uncomfortable moments of silence or inactivity. I see it every day in the streets and subway of NYC. People plastered to their phones missing life walk by. Emotional zombies by habit.
And if we are truly abandoned in loneliness, whether we've been left behind or we haven't felt a place to belong there are many out there in a thousand empty rooms waiting for someone to walk through. We just need to break out of our comfort zones, change our habits and routines of life. Personally for me what helped was joining and attending various Meetup.com groups and even hosting my own. A year ago I would have thought it was a ridiculous idea but I know I needed to change and do something that involved meeting new people in restructuring my life. It takes initiative. A simple foot through the door of uncomfortableness.
