It is the Distinguished Company at the Bijou Planks!
Today we see Benjamin Franklin. A true polymath, Ben Franklin epitomized the 'Renaissance man'. His fields of study and observation were varied and he could not only speak intelligently on almost any subject, but also progressively, furthering ideas and research.
Benjamin Franklin was born on Milk Street, in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1706, and baptized at the Old South Meeting House. He was one of seventeen children born to Josiah Franklin. When Ben was 15, one of his older brothers, James, founded The New-England Courant, which was the first truly independent newspaper in the colonies.
When James denied Ben the opportunity to write a letter to the paper for publication, Franklin adopted the pseudonym of "Silence Dogood", a middle-aged widow. Mrs. Dogood's letters were published and became a subject of conversation around town. Neither James nor the Courant's readers were aware of the ruse, and James was unhappy with Ben when he discovered the popular correspondent was his younger brother. Franklin was an advocate of free speech from an early age. When his brother was jailed for three weeks in 1722 for publishing material unflattering to the governor, young Franklin took over the newspaper and had Mrs. Dogood (quoting Cato's Letters) proclaim: "Without freedom of thought there can be no such thing as wisdom and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech."
Being the virtuoso of life that Ben Franklin was, it is impossible to concisely capture even the highlights of his endeavors. He was a leading writer, printer, political philosopher, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. So, would we talk about Franklin's tireless efforts for Colonial freedom, his studies and observations of nature, his inventions, his ambassadorships, his written works or his quotes?
So let his auspicious beginning recorded above motivate you to read further on Benjamin Franklin. A distinguished individual!

The 2022 parade takes place on Saturday 3rd September 2022.

Front of the Citrus Sails Quilt for the Inspire Circle of Do.Good Stitches.
I really wanted to make a bright and happy quilt for a child in need - so thought that saturated citrus colors would be the way to go. I think the half square triangles give it some visual interest. As it happens, the colors coordinated nicely with the fall leaves as well...yay. =)

mind you, this is another one of my long ass stories. i like to call these people the invisible people. the people we walk right by like they aren't humans too, like they don't breathe, starve, and sleep like we do. a lot of people ask me why I do this, "it's not your fault they are homeless." well, yeah it's not. but am I also human? this is a former soldier, army for 6 years, who after loosing his own mother and brother, knew what it felt like for those others who he had taken the lives off. while dealing with depression he decided to go abscond from all family in hope off getting his mind back in a good place and starting life over. shit happens man, if I ever, for whatever reason end up homeless would I want some damn help? i stopped for a few minutes and asked him if had anything to eat today and not surprisingly the answer was a no. as much as I was craving chipotle the whole day, I knew It was a no-brainer. i had food at home, I had a home I could go to, a bed I can lay on, a mom to go home too. he didn't. decided to buy him a box of pizza, some water and a few snacks. though having no money left on me, the feeling was rewarding. happy holidays, from my new friend and i.

Cancer Causing Ingredients in Dog Foods
Ethoxyquin
Ethoxyquin is a commonly found preservative in dog food. Dog foods with fish meal will typically contain ethoxyquin , because the U.S. Coast Guard requires that all fish meal transported by boat be treated with ethoxyquin, according to USDA (PDF).
Ethoxyquin was originally developed as a herbicide. So, why are we feeding this to dogs?
Dog food manufacturers use this preservative because it's cheap, but it was linked to a plethora of health problems . Not only can this preservative cause cancer of the liver, spleen, stomach, and skin, but it is also linked to kidney and liver damage, immune deficiency syndrome, and blindness .
All dog food with animal protein meals and animal fats are treated with preservatives. This includes fish meal, chicken meal, beef meal, lamb meal, etc. But some dog food manufacturers use natural preservatives instead of potentially toxic ones.
Legally, dog food manufacturers have no requirement to disclose preservatives added ingredients before they reach the pet food manufacturing plant. This means that if dog food contains ethoxyquin, manufacturers aren’t required to put it on the label.
The more fat that is in a product, the more preservatives the product will need, so look for dog foods with lower fat content. Check with your vet when purchasing a new brand of food, as they will know and often advise against certain cancer causing foods for dogs.

It is commonly mistaken that Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” However, Franklin apparently did not like beer very much and was much more of a wine lover. The quote originally came from a letter that Franklin wrote to his friend André Morellet while he was in France. He stated,
“Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, and which incorporates itself with the grapes to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy!”

Although Franklin does love wine, here, he may be referring to the greatness of God and the wonders of the rain and the vineyards, rather than the greatness of wine. However, either way, the quote never had anything to do with beer.
It is still unknown who started this rumor, or when his words got twisted since it it so hard to trace the roots to a rumor that started so long ago. However, according to beer.about.com/od/historyofbeer, the rumor may have spread so broadly because so many people commonly use the quote, and after hearing it so often, it is automatically is believed to be true. Also, since Franklin is known to have a satirical side to him, it would not be preposterous to believe that he may have said such a thing. However, today the false quote is still printed on-shirts all around the world.

While BHA was found to be safe in some cases, certain studies found this ingredient linked to breast cancer and testicular cancer .
