The Primrose Hill Community Woodland is very popular with dog walkers. Sometimes you wonder who is the boss in the pack. This charming little white dog started barking when I pointed a camera at her, while her four-legged companion said hello in more friendly fashion. Taken with owner’s permission.
Earlier, I was watching another large group of dogs with owners when a black retriever come close with a ball and politely asked me to join him for a play – and who could resist that look in his eyes. Primrose Hill Community Woodland. Bath, BANES, UK.
Or the light eating dog, just kidding, but the impression especially on the black background there is not enough light. Our guide dog, Zita, has a fresh haircut, therefore the fur is quite short with little curls. The advantage, you can see the eyes, somehow. Reflection and absorption is highly dependent on the shape and of the hair and the light incidence. Set up in my living room, on top of a dog table and 2 lights from Elinchrom.
But the real challenge is to ‘direct’ Zita to sit up and try to get some reflections into the eyes.
Strobist Info, as for the setup, front an Elinchrom litemotiv, approx. 45 ° to the left as the main light, 2 strip boxes from the left and the right for the flanks of the dog. And on some of the pictures, there was an additional reflector opposite the main light, reflecting on of the strip lights.
As Background a black hole, sun bounce mini, sidelights metered 2 stops below the main light, the background was approx. 3 – 4 stops below the main light, doesn’t look like it, still had to process it a little darker in LR.

Here is Tommy posing for a photo, this was back in September 2021 he turned 6 months old on the day of this photo. I sure miss him, it's been almost 7months now R.I.P March 29.3.2022-5.11.2022
Our new puppy, a Cavapoo - half Cavalier King Charles spaniel and half miniature poodle. About 9 weeks old here. Hasn't been groomed yet, so this is the natural look of his hair - so thick and wavy. I love the brushed look of the face and head, especially around the eyes. But again, he's never been brushed!
Sophie, a super energetic Yorkie, with all four paws off the ground while in pursuit of a tossed toy.
My little buddy, Charlie.
"With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and take a picture, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself..."
Brystle, a rescued mixed terrier breed, looks directly into the lens with her sad eyes. She's a very expressive dog.
A casual encounter with Grey, a local English Setter who was surprised to find me in *his* playground :-)
Went to a dog show at a local church in a suburb of Montreal where one could adopt dogs of all kinds. This real little 3 month old cutie was NOT up for adoption; the lady owner was there just to see the dogs, but he was the show stopper. NO she said, I will not part with him.
I think she would have had a lot of takers!
The Chow Chow is a dog breed originally from northern China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan , which means "puffy-lion dog". The breed has also been called the Tang Quan, "Dog of the Tang Empire". It is believed that the Chow Chow is one of the native dogs used as the model for the Foo dog, the traditional stone guardians found in front of Buddhist temples and palaces.

Lola (foreground) is eight years old and the grand-dam of Bella. At eight years of age she is still energetic in her pursuit of squirrels and rubber balls. She is also enormous and muscular for a Bouvier des Flandres female. In barn hunt competition where dogs are trained to hunt for and point to domestic pet rats (enclosed for their safety in PVC containers) Lola has been known to dislodge entire hay bales in order to get to the prey. Both dogs have earned their certification as AKC champions in the accredited show rings.
