Hudson Line #8847 rolls through Dobbs Ferry, New York on the Hudson River behind Metro-North's 40th anniversary P32AC-DM painted in the original livery worn by FL9s during the agency's startup in 1983. The George Washington Bridge and 1WTC can be seen downriver on the bottom right.
As sunset approaches, Albany bound Empire Service train 237 skirts the Hudson River in Dobbs Ferry, NY as it leaves the skyline of Manhattan behind.
When life hands you 50-mph winds on your wedding day, make … windade?
Both Missy and Charlie were each told about 100 times that bad weather on your wedding day is good luck for your marriage. I have a feeling they won't even need it.
Many thanks to John Morgali, who assisted me on this wedding. Gotta love voice-activated light stands.

View of the Palisades, Hudson River, Metro North Train and silhuete of the George Washington Bridge and New York City from Dobbs Ferry.
I have this photo, taken moments after a photo I liked so much I put it on the front page of my Web site, in a sample album I show clients. It has drawn enough pleased guffaws that I figured I would share it with y'all.

The last of a Heritage 3-pack on May 4, 2025. While dining in the Half Moon we also saw the New Haven green/yellow pinstripe unit pass by as well.
Heritage on the Hudson - Metro North's New York Central heritage wrapped P32AC-DM is skirting the Hudson River as it shoves an inbound train towards Grand Central through Dobbs Ferry, NY at sunset. The skyline of New York City can be seen in the distance.
Water Level Route Successor - It's not hard to imagine if New York Central successor Penn Central had survived to the present day, scenes like this would be common place. In reality, what we see here is Metro North's Penn Central inspired heritage P32AC-DM skirting the Hudson River at Dobbs Ferry, NY with Poughkeepsie bound train 849.

One of ConnDOTs New Haven painted P32AC-DM skirts the shoreline of the Hudson River in Dobbs Ferry, NY as it leads an outbound train towards Poughkeepsie on Metro North's Hudson Line.
I can't take too much credit for this one. Joe McNally set up the location, and Jasmine has never met a light source she didn't look fabulous in. All I did was direct the intricacies of her pose, and decide I liked a warm/cold light split instead of the given cold/colder set-up. But it's a great way to point you to my full review of Joe's lighting seminar.

Water Level Route - Metro North's New York Central heritage wrapped P32AC-DM is seen skirting the Hudson River in Dobbs Ferry, NY as it shoves an inbound rush hour train towards Grand Central in Manhattan. The New York Central gained the nickname the "Water Level Route" from scenes such as this.

--PS: In case you're not following me on Twitter or Facebook, you may not have heard that the Wedding Photojournalist Association has named me one of the top 20 wedding photojournalists in the world for 2008, based on contest entries--
Before the wedding, Anya and Josh told me: "Our beautiful reception hall is still under major renovations! The hall is great, but we don't know where we'll take pictures!"
I just smiled to myself. We went out for some of the normal, pretty wedding formals, getting some good stuff but also warming them up to the idea that they are rockstars on this day. By the time we got back to the renovated reception hall, all I had to say was "Hey, why don't you jump on that backhoe?" and they were psyched.
Balanced with twilight ambient, lit by assistant holding a flash high left through an umbrella.

Lightning storm viewed from State Line lookout park just off the Palisades Parkway in Northern New Jersey along the Hudson River looking North towards Dobbs Ferry, NY, Hastings on Hudson, NY, Tarrytown, NY and the east side of the Hudson River (New York state.
Will do a tweet or two regarding the storm Saturday through Monday as it has decent potential at night for some lightning in the New York metro area. I will also post a couple of more locations for shooting Lightning from under cover.

At the end of yesterday's Joe McNally seminar, they just cut us loose in the studio. I set Andrew up with one of the big Elinchrom octabanks, above left.

DEDPXL Assignment 3
Trying to find the right angle of Liza, the light/shadow and the bedspread - and keep it focused. I might burn the upper left, but like how it draws the eye there then back to Liza's eye.
Not your normal wedding pic, I know, but I'm a bit kooky.

Canon 5D Mark II, 24-70mm f/2.8L
Shot from Joe McNally's advanced flash workshop in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
This image was done with one 580EX II in a Lastolite Ezybox at camera left, just out of frame. The strobe was gelled with a full cut of CTO and the camera was set to tungsten white balance. There was a pretty big wall of windows behind the model so I just increased the shutter speed to drop the ambient and lit the model with the softbox. The strobe is connected to the camera with a 15' ETTL cable.

To me, wedding photography isn't about what you can do when everything goes right, it's about what you can do when everything is working against you. Anya and Josh had a fantastic wedding and couldn't ask for better weather. The venue, though, was under heavy renovations, and nicely provided a limo to a nearby park.
Except the limo driver didn't know how to get there. As we slowly manuver meandering turns, Anya was yelling the same thing I was thinking -- "We're losing the light!"
We pull in next to the river, only to realize this isn't the park ? it's a local restaurant. The sun is minutes away from going down, so I let the bride know the principal rules of wedding photography: 1) It's better to ask forgiveness than permission and 2) People in wedding dresses can get away with almost anything.
This shot was taken less than two minutes from exiting the limo. My assistant, of course, was at the actual park, so I had the bride's dad hold the flash.
And we didn't even get arrested.

Canon 5D Mark II, 24-70mm f/2.8L
Shot from Joe McNally's advanced flash workshop in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Strobist: Started off at 2.8L and adjusted the shutter speed until I ended up with the look I wanted for the ambient light. Model is lit with a single 580EX II in a Lastolite Ezybox at camera right. The strobe was tethered to the camera with a 15' ETTL cable from flashzebra.com. The flash was in TTL mode. TTL flash was brought up 1.33 stops and the Ezybox was feathered off the subject to get the desired result. Camera white balance was set for tungsten and the flash was gelled with full cut of CTO.

The groom's sister kisses their mother at the end of Missy and Charie's wedding.
You've seen some photos from this one before, including six or so different shots in Explore, but I've decided to do a Web slide show for each wedding in 2008. A slide show shows enough photos to show whether you covered it well, not just whether you got lucky a few times, and so I want to be able to show people that I always do the best I can. The last thing you would want is to love someone's portfolio but, because of sickness, tiredness, or because they weren't in the mood, they just kind of phone it in.
In fact, I was in extreme pain from neck weariness and a fall during the entire wedding -- but no one knew until the job was done. View the slideshow here.
