If you are looking for a gorgeous place to take photos, go for a safe swim, a relatively easy hike and an experience you will remember foerever, consider discovering Kiholo Bay and Wainanali’i Pond, located about 30 minutes north of Kona on the Kohala Coast in the Big Island of Hawaii.
My husband and I recently explored this area and captured many photos of this hidden gem. I captured this image of my husband perched on a big lava rock while taking a selfie by the Wainanali’i Pond before we went swimming. This turquoise color lagoon is perfect for swimming and for some snorkeling. Getting here is a bit of a trek since visitors need to hike through lava fields and lava rocks along the shore in order to reach the lagoon. The water is a bit murky due to the mix of fresh water and the sea water, but the water is certainly very refreshing. Green sea turtles are commonly spotted in this lagoon, some of them resting by the lava rocks surrounding the lagoon. Photo taken with DJI Osmo Action camera and edited with Luminar AI.
Here is a little history of the area:
There are two ancient fishponds which are interconnected spring-fed pools and host abundant native species of fish, along with opae (shrimp) and hapawai (mollusk). The ponds have historical connections to Hawaiian moolelo (stories). Extending outward from one of them is a 200-foot stone auwai (ditch) that connects the ponds to the ocean. During high tides, sea turtles utilize the waterway to enter and exit the brackish water.
Kiholo Bay was an important source of food, thus it was favored among Hawaiian chiefs, including King Kamehameha, for its fish supply and protective location. Kamehameha oversaw the construction of a large fishpond separate from the others, which was later destroyed in 1859 by a volcanic eruption from Mauna Loa nearly 30 miles away.
"The Bourbon Brothers" consisting of Scott Ireland, Gary Sharp & myself adopted a lean-to on a remote pond in the Adirondacks of New York. Our brother Scott recently had dual knee replacement surgery and could not join Gary & I for our overnight journey to inspect the lean-to.
Our trip into Fish Pond consisted of short and long carries. Our route began on Long Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area as we paddled through Slang, Turtle and Clamshell Ponds in order to reach Fish. Originally we had planned to return the following day via another route but had heard the mud on some of those carry trails was knee deep, so we opted to reverse route instead.
So please join us for our journey!
"Recently the United States Military has been training over the Adirondacks. The roar of fighter jets could be heard above the clouds. Just as we arrived at the lean-to on Fish Pond an Army UH60 Blackhawk flew over. Although this stuff is neat it also disturbs the solitude that we seek in the wilderness."

The dense lush trail in the Middle Fork lined with ferns. Beautiful in the spring time lushness.

After so many hopes from the extreme video enthusiasts around the world, Dji finally announced his new Osmo Action camera, which looks like an absolute hit this summer.
The company's first action camera features a unique "Three-Glass Aspherical Lens" design that guarantees an elegant look and durability of the hull.
Osmo Action hopes to win the consumers with the availability of two displays. On the back, there is a 2.25 "touch panel for interface management and framing, and a 1.4" display is available on the front, which is convenient for capturing sweeps or deposits. The gadget is waterproof and shock-resistant and can withstand a drop of 1.5 meters and immersion at a depth of up to 11 meters without an extra case. There is also the option of adding additional filters to the lens - such as ND for shooting in high ambient light conditions.
Oѕmо Action supports up to 4K60 HDR video recording, captures slower video at 1080p240, uses DJS RockSteady electronic image stabilization (EIS) and can also operate in delay and hyperlapse mode. Pictures can be shot at up to 12MP resolution in raw or JPG format, and when you rotate the camera to 90 °, it will automatically switch to portrait mode.
All photos and videos are recorded on a microSD card in a slot that supports microSD / SDHC / SDXC cards with a minimum write speed of 30 Mb / s and a maximum capacity of 256 GB.
Osmo Action can be managed via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi from iOS or Android using the DJI Mimo application.
The DJI Osmo Action is one of the fantastic little gadgets that runs circles around other GoPro copycats. It also gives the Hero7 Black a serious run for its money and also manages to hold its own ground even against the Hero8 series. It has great image quality, plenty of shooting modes and that selfie screen. If your vlog needs a lot of movement, needs steady video and don’t want to pay GoPro prices, the DJI Osmo Action is the best alternative.
I went for a hike up the Middle Fork. The trail is closed and I got a warning ticket from the ranger as a result, but such a beautiful hike.

A hike while injured on my local mountain. Each step hurt and each breath caused my rib to ache. But it was good to get out and move again on my own two feet.
