El pes de la gravetat: la història es fa present a Miravet

Miravet és un poble que sembla desafiar les lleis de la gravetat. Es va aixecar dalt d’un turó abrupte en ple meandre de l’Ebre, una talaia privilegiada que l’ha convertit en una de les viles més boniques de les Terres de l’Ebre. Et convidem a fer un passeig per la història viva de Miravet.
El nucli històric de Miravet és un entramat de cases que pengen sobre el riu i que s’enfilen per la muntanya i els penya-segats. Precisament, des del bell mig, a la plaça Major, arrenca aquesta ruta guiada –gratuïta per a nens de fins a set anys.
Entre els típics carrers porxats, cases antigues, bonics racons i molt bones vistes sobre el riu i la seva vegetació, s’escolen els moments més durs de la seva biografia. A les cases del carrer del Riu hi veuràs plaques que recorden la riuada de 1907, que va deixar el poble completament arrasat. A Miravet la història és present.
Els efectes de la Batalla de l’Ebre
La vila va ser també testimoni directe d’un dels episodis més cruents de la Guerra Civil, la Batalla de l’Ebre. Els efectes encara es noten a les nombroses cases caigudes i abandonades. Quan les contemples et pots imaginar el ressò de l’artilleria. Al centre del poble també l’església Vella mereix una visita. És un temple renaixentista construït entre els segles XVI i XVII per l’orde de l’Hospital. Sabies que es va construir damunt d’on hi havia una mesquita musulmana?
Vistes espectaculars de la zona des del castell templer
Encara hi ha un altre edifici històric més espectacular a Miravet, el castell templer dels segles XII-XIII. És una fortalesa imponent envoltada per una muralla de 25 metres d’alçada que sembla sorgir de les roques i situada encara més amunt que el poble. Va ser conquerida el 1153 per Ramon Berenguer IV, que la va donar a l’ordre del Temple. D’aquí ve el sobrenom de templers: eren cavallers i monjos a la vegada, que van agafar les armes al segle XII per protegir els cristians que feien el pelegrinatge a Terra Santa. Des de les diverses terrasses del castell tindràs unes vistes espectaculars de la zona.

The house may look like a 19th century Italian palazzo, but in reality this house began as, and still is, a research institution and it was inaugurated in 1933 under the name Scuola Romena di Roma. The house is designed by the architect Petre Antonescu.
This is one of several institutes and academies, focusing on research in the humanities that can be found not just in Rome, but this part of Rome. The neighbours are Academia Belgica, Reale Istituto Neerlandese, Istituto Svedese di Studi Classici (where I was staying at the time), Accademia d’Egitto di Belle Arti and Accademia di Danimarca - and The British School at Rome is at a close distance (as are several others). But while most (if not all) of the other institutes have worked continuously as just that since their founding, the Romanian Academy has had a more diverse history. It was completely closed 1947-1969 and left to decay, and when it reopened it was as a Romanian library and culture centre. After 1989 it renamed itself Accademia di Romania a Roma and in 2005 it was re-admitted into the official organization for the foreign research institutes in Rome.

It currently ranks third in size after Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. I spent four consecutive days within the park which provided an amazing variety of wildlife.

Die Halde Nordeutschland ist durch den Aushub der dortigen Zechen bei Kamp-Lintfort und Neukirchen-Vluyn entstanden. Auf 102 m Höhe ist das sogenannte Hallenhaus errichtet worden. Hier oben bietet sich Richtung Osten eine reiche Aussicht auf den Niederrhein und das Ruhrgebiet. Zudem gibt es hier oben genug Platz für diverse Events.

Stone Lake NWL is an urban refuge located 10 miles from downtown Sacramento. The Malachite sunbird is a small nectarivorous bird, often found in in the Fynbos around the Western Cape in South Africa.
The perch in this photo is also noteworthy - the Erica Bauera is one of 652 species of Fynbos that makes the Fynbos biome - covering an area about the size of Portugal - the most diverse plant habitat in the world. Yes, it is more diverse even that tropical rainforests!. To make it even more special - many varieties of Fynbos (around 70% and including the particular Erica) are completely unique to this small region.

After a fantasy football soiree in Lawrence, I decided to head out and managed five trains on three lines, over the course of about two hours. Not bad!
Last up was the UP 1983 east rolling along the Kansas Sub between Midland and Lawrence. This was on the head end of the UEUMPL-10, a loaded ethanol train that runs from Doulom, NE - Peach, TX.

The Skull Rock Nature Loop passes through a maze of spectacular rock formations and luxuriant washes. Rock in this area began as liquid molten deep below the earth's surface. Continuously heated by movements in the Earth's crust, this molten oozed upward and cooled while still below the surface. Subsequent surface layer erosion exposed the rock, a form of granite called Monzogranite.
This nature loop offers excellent views of the east valley of Pinto Basin and sport some diverse vegetation and wildlife provided by the many standing pools of water in the recesses of the rock formations.

Las Lampyrinae son una gran subfamilia de luciérnagas (Lampyridae). La delimitación exacta y la sistemática interna son un tema de debate; durante mucho tiempo, este grupo se utilizó como un "taxón de basura" para albergar a todas las luciérnagas con relaciones insuficientemente resueltas.
De todos modos, son muy diversas, incluso como un buen grupo monofilético, que contiene luciérnagas de destellos y de brillo continuo de la región holártica y algunas formas tropicales.

Callopisma dominicana is a species of insect that belongs to the firefly family (Lampyridae). It has been found in the Central Mountain Range of the Dominican Republic.
The Lampyrinae are a large subfamily of fireflies (Lampyridae). The exact delimitation and the internal systematics are a matter of debate; for long, this group was used as a "wastebin taxon" to hold any fireflies with insufficiently resolved relationships.
They are very diverse, even as a good monophyletic group, containing flashing and continuous-glow fireflies from the Holarctic and some tropical forms.

Some Vulture Facts.
Vultures are incredibly diverse. There are over 20 species found across the world.
Vultures are found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica.
Vultures lay only one egg every year or so.
A vulture can eat up to 1 kilogram (about 2 pounds) of meat in a single meal. That’s over 10% of its body weight!
In Asia, some vultures are almost extinct and have declined by 99% in just 15 years.
Vultures have huge ranges. For example, researchers found a single vulture using all of Kenya, northern Tanzania, and even going into Ethiopia and Sudan.
All vultures eat carrion or dead animals for at least part of their diet.
In ancient Egypt, vultures were used as a symbol of femininity.
In Germany, police have trained turkey vultures to help them find missing people.
Because many species of vultures are social, vultures are highly affected by poisoning. Over a hundred birds can be killed at just one poisoned carcass.
Vultures are the ultimate recyclers. They can strip a carcass in just a few hours. They keep our environment clean and disease-free.

El llangardaix ocel·lat o llangardaix comú (Lacerta lepida) és un rèptil de la família lacèrtids que pot mesurar fins a 70 cm de longitud. És de color verd o bru, amb ocels blaus als costats del cos.
Es tracta d'una espècie pròpia del sud-est d'Europa, associada a ecosistemes mediterranis. La trobem distribuïda a la Península Ibèrica, sud de França, nord-oest d'Itàlia i el nord-oest d'Àfrica. A la península Ibèrica només és absent al nord de Galícia, al vessant nord de la Cornisa Cantàbrica, al País Basc i al nord de Navarra. A Catalunya es distribueix per tot arreu excepte les zones de més altitud dels Pirineus, podent-la trobar des del nivell del mar fins als 2.200 m.
Dins de l'hàbitat mediterrani sembla no dependre gaire dels factors climàtics podent-se trobar sota condicions molt diferents, tot i que no ha estat trobada per sota dels 6ºC de temperatura mitjana anual.
És una espècie ubiqua, que ocupa tota mena de biòtops, exclosos aquells completament humanitzats i els de caire Eurosiberià. Així doncs, es troba a tota mena de conreus i boscos mediterranis i de muntanya com són els alzinars, pinedes, garrigues, brolles, vegetació de ribera, sorrals costaners, erms i prats de muntanya mitjana.
En general, el llangardaix és una espècie que prefereix àrees amb cobertura vegetal no gaire elevada, ja que així té espais oberts on poder prendre el Sol i refugis per poder-se amagar. L’abandonament progressiu de les zones de conreu ha fet que el llangardaix ocel·lat s’hagi vist desplaçat pel lluert (Lacerta bilineata), un altre llangardaix de mida mitjana més acostumat a la vegetació espessa.
És un llangardaix de mida molt gran que pot arribar a superar els 24 cm entre el cap i la cloaca i els 70 cm de longitud total. El cos és robust amb el cap gros i ample. Els mascles són més grans que les femelles, amb el cap, les extremitats i la cua més desenvolupades. També presenten porus femorals més grans. D’aquests, emana certa substància amb una olor característica que serveix per marcar el territori.
La coloració i el disseny varien amb l’edat, i és generalment molt vistós. Els adults presenten un disseny dorsal format per un reticulat negre sobre un fons verd groguenc. El cap és d’un color més bru i sense el reticulat. Els dos sexes presenten uns ocels blaus als costats del cos, essent més marcats en els mascles. Els individus juvenils es caracteritzen per presentar fileres transversals d’ocels clars encerclats de negre al llarg de tot el cos.
És una espècie diürna que insola per mantenir la temperatura corporal. Es manté inactiva durant els mesos d’hivern i incrementen l’activitat a mesura que va augmentant la temperatura. Quan arriba la primavera els mascles es mostren territorials i agressius.
És una espècie ovípara, amb postes entre 7 i 25 ous, depenent de la mida de la femella. En general fan una única posta l’any. Els ous tenen una closca amb consistència apergaminada que permet l’intercanvi de gasos i aigua amb el medi.
L’època de zel i posta varia en funció de la regió i l’altitud, tot i que generalment comencen els festejos els mesos d’abril i maig, i les primeres còpules la segona meitat de maig. Les postes tenen lloc la primera meitat de juny i els naixements tenen lloc entre finals d’agost i principis d’octubre.
Els individus joves són insectívors, mentre que els adults tenen una alimentació omnívora a base d’altres rèptils, com ara sargantanes de mida petita, ocells petits i mamífers petits com musaranyes i ratolins.
Els seus depredadors més habituals són la serp verda, la serp blanca i diverses aus de presa, tot i que no és una presa fàcil degut a la seva gran agilitat, les seves urpes esmolades i a que utilitza una tècnica emprada per altres saures, com és autotomitzar (deixar anar) la cua. Quan la cua queda alliberada manté un cert moviment que fa que sembli viva, i això distreu el depredador.
A walk around my local park in Balloch last week found the diverse naturalised and native trees in peak autumn condition. One of my favourites are the Japanese maples which can be found in abundance around the walled garden in the centre of the park.

Stone Town is the main city on Zanzibar. It is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, with a unique mixture of Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. For this reason, the town has been included in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2000.
It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wondering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
After years in the southwest, I'm still struck by how diverse the landscape is - barren flat desert, towering mountain ranges, abrupt canyons, life rich rivers and everything in between.

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is as diverse as North Carolina. Along the trail, you may see mountain vistas, rolling Piedmont farms, picture postcard colonial towns, weathered tobacco barns, old textile villages, country churches, rushing mountain streams, coastal swamps, hardwood and pine forests, lighthouses, sand dunes, miles of seashore, and friendly people. 680 miles of the route are on trail, and connecting backroads and an optional paddle route allow hikers to trek across the state.
