The now refurbished Rosebank Distillery.

Rosebank Distillery's history on its present site began in 1840 when James Rankine, a local wine merchant, acquired the maltings of the Camelon Distillery, which were on the opposite bank of the canal to the main distillery. Rankine expanded the distillery in 1845 before handing management onto his son R.W. Rankine. Rosebank became a sought-after whisky among blenders, who regarded it as 'top dressing

Glenmorangie (the toponym is believed to derive from either Gaelic Gleann Mòr na Sìth "vale of tranquillity" or Gleann Mór-innse "vale of big meadows") is a distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. The distillery is owned by The Glenmorangie Company Ltd (a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), whose main product is the range of Glenmorangie single malt whisky. Glenmorangie is categorised as a Highland distillery and boasts the tallest stills in Scotland.

Another from the archives...During Artprize 2015, we went into Long Road Distillery to see the art prize entries that were there. I was more interested in what was behind the big glass window. Don't know anything about distilling, except it looked really cool.

Tonight in Sydney.

Saturday, 18th October, 2025.

This is a brand new location for me at Distillery Hill.

Pyrmont, near Darling Harbour.

The view looks west along Distillery Drive at Pyrmont towards the ubiquitous ANZAC bridge (opened in 1995).

Zoom in to see the traffic signs on the ANZAC bridge. I have used the zoom lens so you can see them clearly. Note, on the furthest right, the 'City West Link' - my way home to the Hills District (unless I take the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the M2).

The Pyrmont precinct, most especially Distillery Hill, now consists of an army of fashionable apartments with views across Blackwattle Bay and/or Darling Harbour and White Bay. But, before 1986, it was home to the Colonial Sugar Refinery which produced rum and industrial alcohol. Hence the name: 'Distillery Drive'.

During a distillery tour in 2019, when such things were still possible

Graz, quarter Gries. This old distillery lost 2020 the licence to produce the Jägermeister bitters and closed 2022.

The Cairn Distillery is a modern distillery, opened in 2022 in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.

One year old American Bald Eagle. The head is not fully white. How ironic, American Eagle at the mouth of the Russian River in North CAL.

I wanted to get outside for a walk this morning, since we're having exceptionally warm weather down here. I had to get out to excercise my trigger finger. My walk took me around town and then along my very favorite area, a paved walkway named, "Baja California Park" . Lined with trees, flowering bushes, and wildlife, I came upon a sighting of this Road Runner, sleeping in this Mesquite Tree, not more than 4 feet away! I seem to have as much good luck photographing Road Runners as can be. So I followed this guy for a while, taking over 80 photos of him!

As the title suggests, this superbly double-restored Georgian windmill is about to reopen to the public for the first time since 2015. All the buildings you see here were constructed in the 1830s, and even the newer railing fence is made to look the part.

The property was bought by a prominent Australian businessman, John Ibrahim, who grew to love Tasmanian whisky because of a friendship with the Godfather of modern Australian whisky, Bill Lark. Lark's (despite its relatively small size) is still one of the most prestigious Tasmanian whiskies, and John and Bill travelled to Scotland in 2016 to learn more about establishing what is to become the largest whisky distillery in Tasmania. callingtonmilldistillery.com/pages/story

The new distillery looks absolutely superb (from the outside) and will be opening in the New Year, as tourism begins to return to this island state after nearly two years enforced hibernation. I could only get some shots of the outside on this visit, but will return to show you the distillery soon. For the moment we should appreciate the wonderful way in which they have preserved the old mill and from their website you can see how the new modern distillery blends in beautifully with history. The mill will be used to grind the malts used in the production of the mash. As a lover of whisky I am delighted!
