Während seiner Gymnasialzeit in Brno studierte Hrůša Klavier und Posaune und entwickelte sein Interesse am Dirigieren. Später studierte er Dirigieren an der Akademie der musischen Künste in Prag bei Jiří Bělohlávek, Radomil Eliška und Leoš Svárovský. Im Jahr 2000 nahm er am Prager-Frühling-Dirigentenwettbewerb teil. 2003 war er Gewinner des internationalen Lovro-von-Matačić-Dirigierwettbewerbs in Zagreb, Kroatien.[1] In seinem Graduierungskonzert im Jahr 2004 im Rudolfinum dirigierte er Josef Suks Asrael-Sinfonie mit den Prager Radiosinfonikern. Zurzeit vervollständigt Hrůša seine Studien mit einer Dissertation zu zeitgenössischen tschechischen Komponisten. Hrůša benennt Bělohlávek als einen seiner wichtigsten Mentoren.[2]
Von 2002 bis 2005 war Hrůša fester Gastdirigent der Tschechischen Philharmonie. 2005–2006 war er fester Gastdirigent des Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, als Assistent des Chefdirigenten Myung-Whun Chung. Im April 2006 verpflichtete er sich bei Supraphon zu einem CD-Album mit sechs CDs, wobei die ersten drei CDs mit der Prager Philharmonie eingespielt wurden.[3] [4]
2005 bis 2008 war Hrůša der Haupt-Gastdirigent der Prager Philharmoniker. Mit Beginn der Konzertsaison 2008–2009 wurde er zu deren Chefdirigent ernannt.[5] Von 2005 bis 2006 war er ferner Chefdirigent der Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonie in Zlín.[6]
Im Februar 2009 wurde Hrůša mit Wirkung vom Januar 2010 zum musikalischen Leiter des Glyndebourne Oper Festivals ernannt.[7] Im September 2011 schließlich wurde er mit Wirkung vom September 2013 zum Musikdirektor der königlich-dänischen Oper und des königlich-dänischen Sinfonieorchesters ernannt.[8] Im Januar 2012 gab Hrůša dann jedoch bekannt, dass er aus Solidarität mit dem Rücktritt von Keith Warner wegen empfindlicher Budgetkürzungen die Führung nicht annehmen werde.[9] Ab Herbst 2016 wird er die Nachfolge von Jonathan Nott als Chefdirigent der Bamberger Symphoniker übernehmen.

On Friday the university registrar office's website finally listed me as having matriculated. It's about as official as it gets, at least for a while. The diploma is "in the mail," and graduation ceremonies (held just once a year) aren't until May.

Part of my dissertation was published in a French cultural journal. Google Translate reads this as "Of society to control the desire to control". I think it actually means something like "from control society to control's desire". Sweeeeeeet.
Since I don’t have time for new ones, I thought I’d finally post the trials and tribulations of my newborn dissertation Adolf, who I’d otherwise never publicly acknowledge, even if Maury Povich told me the DNA tests say I AM the father.
Adolf was conceived on my desk (I know… meow!). Here you can see cells starting to divide, as their interval-5 pitch collections get mirrored around a tritonal axes of (evil) symmetry. The ultrasound shows its stratification in terms of musical space, you can almost see its little evil heart beat.
