Carved round stones, known as temalocatl, were used in a form of gladiatorial combat. Captive prisoners would be attached by ropes to the opening at the center of the stone and compelled to fight their captor to the death. These sacrificial stones were often decorated with solar imagery alluding to the sun's association with militarism and sacrifice.
