Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria. In 2020, it had a population of 156,872.

The town is on the site of the Roman settlement of Iuvavum. Salzburg was founded as an episcopal see in 696 and became a seat of the archbishop in 798. Its main sources of income were salt extraction, trade and gold-mining. The fortress of Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, dates from the 11th century. In the 17th century, Salzburg became a center of the Counter-Reformation, with monasteries and numerous Baroque churches built.

Salzburg's historic center (German: Altstadt) is renowned for its Baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city-centers north of the Alps. The historic center was enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The city has three universities and a large population of students. Tourists also visit Salzburg to tour the historic center and the scenic Alpine surroundings.

In Redlschlag near Bernstein there is a viewing cone, also affectionately called "Guglhupf", which allows a wonderful panoramic view at 794m.

When the visibility is clear, there is an impressive panorama that extends from the Rax and the Schneeberg in the northwest, across the Bucklige Welt, Lake Neusiedl in the east and all the way to the Pannonian Plain in the southeast.

At the foot of the cone there is a crescent-shaped stone wall that encloses a fireplace. The so-called “chalk fire” served as a warning system for advancing enemies in the Middle Ages and early modern times.

The Bürgerwehr is a fortification on the Mönchsberg in Salzburg, Austria. It dates in large parts from the time of the second city fortification (about 1465–1480) and separates the Mönchsberg into a so-called inner and an outer part. It belongs to the city of Salzburg.

The Bürgerwehr forms the cross-connection between the city wall running along the western edge of the Mönchsberg and the wall around the medieval old town with the Klausentor at the foot of the Mönchsberg. South of the militia was the area of the inner Mönchsberg, which was part of the city of Salzburg. The part north of it belonged to Mülln, which still corresponds to the parish boundaries today. This is where the name MUNIMENTUM DIUIDENS MONTEM ('Bulwark that divides the mountain') comes from.

Because of the first peasant unrest, because of the increasing danger of the Turks, but also because of the threat of military conflicts in the 15th century between Emperor Frederick III and Archbishop Bernhard von Rohr, the city felt compelled to strengthen its fortifications. The latter supported Matthias Corvinus, the King of Hungary, while the citizens were on the side of the emperor. During the term of office of the mayor Hans Glavenberger (from 1482), a wall was built on the Mönchsberg as part of the new city wall, initially with two towers and a zwinger in front of it; this wall was expanded a few decades later into an eight-towered complex. The back of the six newer towers was made of wood, as can still be seen today on the inside of some towers. A wooden covered battlement ran along the defensive walls, but it was largely destroyed in a fire in 1822. The westernmost so-called Marienturm was converted in 1649 from the Hochfürstliche Landschaft (a kind of state parliament of the prince-archbishopric) to a powder tower. The late Gothic militia also had a wide defensive moat and also a palisade building ("fence") in front of it. The town bill of 1486 mentions a fence master and four fence keepers, who were responsible for guarding the complex at night.

In accordance with the civic duties formulated in a letter of atonement dated 20 April 1287 ("proof of military fitness", "maintenance of defence facilities" and "performance of guard duties"), the citizens of the city of Salzburg also performed guard duties on the vigilantes. In 1488, a corresponding guard was mentioned. This Salzburg Citizen Guard was disbanded in 1821/22. (The Civic Music Corps, however, continued to exist, as did the "Salzburg National Guard", the latter until 1851.) It was re-founded in 1979 as a traditional association ("Bürgergarde der Stadt Salzburg").

Since the fortification of the entire northern part of the Mönchsberg up to the Müllner Schanze by Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron, the militia had hardly any military significance. At the time of the Thirty Years' War, soldiers lived here and after that, soldiers lived in the towers with their families until after 1800. Since 1575, the basement of the gate tower of the militia has housed Schanzsträfling, i.e. prisoners who were sentenced to work with poor nutrition. From 1734 onwards, poachers who were not citizens of the city were also imprisoned here.

In 1733 or 1744, two more powder towers were erected outside the militia, but they proved to be unsuitable because of the humidity there. A staircase leading from the Riedenburg to the Mönchsberg across the Lodron Wall on the western slope of the Mönchsberg was built by the city of Salzburg in 1892.
