My Blog

I discovered this beauty at the very edge of the forest. Sadly it is the only one of its kind that I have seen this year. They used to be common.

Unusually for a butterfly, the female does not lay her eggs on the leaves or stem of the caterpillar's food source (in this case violets), but instead one or two meters above the woodland floor in the crevices of tree bark close to clumps of violets.

When the egg hatches in August, the caterpillar immediately goes into hibernation until spring. Upon awakening, it will drop to the ground, and feeds on violets close to the base of the tree. The caterpillar usually feeds at night, and usually conceals itself during the day away from its food source, but during cool weather will bask in the sunny spots on the forest floor on dry, dead leaves. It will pupate amongst the ground vegetation, and the adults will emerge in June.

It sifts from leaden sieves

It sifts from leaden sieves,

It powders all the wood,

It fills with alabaster wool

The wrinkles of the road.

It makes an even face

Of mountain and of plain, —

Unbroken forehead from the east

Unto the east again.

It reaches to the fence,

It wraps it, rail by rail,

Till it is lost in fleeces;

It flings a crystal veil.....

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

My first try with a long exposure... Will have to practice this!

I would like to thank you all for the well wishes yesterday :)

Happy Thursday!! xx

I discovered these remnants on the last steps to the dock, noting two or three more on the lake bottom, and then another two on the bank. Something had discovered and devoured an entire clutch of duck eggs. I have a nesting box by the shore near the dock and have seen ducks (mainly hooded mergansers) regularly inspect it, but the only birds I ever knew to use it were a pair of house swallows and that only once. Unbeknownst to me, it was apparently in use this year as these remains surrounded the site. A mystery as to what feasted on these eggs as there are numerous suspects.

Discovered this little cutie relaxing under our bird feeder. It stayed long enough for me to change my lens and get a few snaps, while yawning, stretching, and rolling. What a treat. Shot thru two dirty glass doors. : )

A rather turbulent looking and somewhat elongated cloud, skirts the surface of the ocean and touches the crest of Pender Island. Above and behind, the swift moving higher clouds also reveal a warm light. Just another pleasant day in Sechelt with some new discoveries including a lone duck.

I discovered this amazing old tree by Tarpon Lake at Anderson Park, and knew I would make a trip back in the late day to try to catch the sun at just the right moment before sunset. There were many trees around, so I thought the golden light from the sun would have trouble illuminating the scene. I arrived at the location about two hours before sunset, because I wasn't sure when the light would be best. As it turned out, as the sun lowered in the sky over the hill, the light had a clear shot over the grassy meadow to illuminate the setting, and right at the end of my shoot just before sunset [after taking around 300 shots], the light turned rich gold and added a sublime beauty to this amazing tree.

I strolled three days through the City

My photographic mission throughout June and early July has been to prove to myself that there is more than one way to photograph a field of poppies. It does not necessarily have to include a huge field in an especially scenic location. I found recently that when using the long end of a zoom creatively anything is possible. There is literally a whole new world to be discovered. That's the great thing about photographing the landscape. We can find worlds within worlds!

Happy Caturday!!

As part of Mizuki's training, we visited the Onepoto Domain. It was her first encounter with ducks, gulls, eels and pigeons. While overwhelmed at first, she quickly settled and decided watching ducks was a bit of fun.

In 1990, Archaeological Survey of India discovered a sunken apsidal stepped well along with few sculptures inside it. This stepped well is located immediately to the north of the Shore Temple, its south edge abutting the northern wall of the Shore Temple. On the extreme south of this newly discovered shrine is placed a monolith statue of Varaha (Boar)in its zoomorphic form. This image is carved in round from a single boulder. The statue was found severely damaged, however, with efforts from ASI restorers, we now see this image in its near original glory. The other element of this stepped well is a slender cylindrical shrine constructed partly in rock and partly in stone. Beyond this cylindrical shrine, further northward, is a circular cistern or mini-well. This is cut downwards with a circular rim-like stone placed at the ground level.

ASI report mentions that this well provides potable water though situated near the ocean. Though Rabe accepts these sockets for the capstones of a well, however, he suggests that these might be constructed to hold the ‘pillar of victory’ taken by Narasimhavarman I from Vatapi (Badami) which probably was installed here.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rabe2 tries to explain political reason behind the systematic destruction of this Varaha image. Rabe suggests that this Varaha monolith was severely and systematically butchered when the Chalukya king Vikramaditya I invaded the Pallava kingdom. The rationale behind this destruction was the submissive and prostrated attitude of the Varaha (Boar) Varaha was the dynastic crest of the Chalukyas. This specific posture of Varaha might be taken as a reference to the subjugation of the Chalukyas by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I. And to take revenge, the Chalukyan army destroyed this Varaha image while marching forward into the Pallava kingdom.

Inscriptions On the Varaha (boar) monolith –

The Varaha sculpture is carved out of the mother rock like the three other animal sculptures in the Five Rathas nearby. It has four birudas (titles) of Rajasimha Pallava, some of his favorites, inscribed upon the base, in Sanskrit in the Pallava Grantha script. The birudas on the side are “Sri RajasimhaH” “Sri RanajayaH” and “Sri BharaH”. The biruda on the rear, under the varaha’s tail, is “Sri Citra KaarmukaH”. Between the legs of the boar on both the and under its tail, leaves of acquatic plants are sculpted. These are similar to those at the base of the Varaha and Gajalakshmi panels in the Varaha Mandapam. These indicate that the boar which represents Vishnu, is diving under water, not merely digging.

However, how to explain the engraved titles of Rajasimha, as the Chalukyan attacked the Pallava kingdom before the reign of Rajasimha. To explain it, Rabe tells that it was most possible that like other monoliths, this Varaha was also executed during the period of Narasimhavarman I(630–668 AD). Therefore, when the Chalukyas attacked the Pallavas, during the reign of Narasimhavarman I and Parameshvaravarman I, this monolith was present in the temple complex. As the Varaha was destroyed before the reign of Rajasimha (695 to 722 AD), it was Rajasimha who restored it and that’s how we find his titles engraved on it. (Above description source Internet).

From the platform on the pyramid of the moon in Teotihuacan, we have a splendid view that let us realize the gigantism of this city.

The city was founded around 100 BC and lasted until the 7th - 8th century AD. At its peak around 500 AD, its population was estimated at 125000 inhabitants or more (source Wikipedia).

In the left of the photo, we discover the pyramid of the sun, 65 meters (216 feet) high. The large driveway opposite is called the Avenue of the Dead, It is more than 2 km (1,3 mile) long.

Scotland

We discovered Scotland later on in life, much to our loss. We went for the first time about 20 years ago and enjoyed every waking and walking moment of it. The scenery, breath taking, the people, the food, the weather, what couldn’t you like about the place.

We had some great holidays and memories there. I hope you like what I’ve posted. This is the first of three postings.
