The Queen of Spring is also the Queen of legends

The peony among the Greeks
In their culture, the peony is much more than a pretty flower for sunny days, it is first and foremost considered a medicinal plant. This faculty also nourished a Greek myth, where anger of the gods and healing mingle. Its name, according to rumors, comes from the doctor Péon, disciple of Asclepius, god of medicine. The latter would have found a remedy for the pain of women during childbirth. His master, jealous of his talent, said to himself that in the end, he deserved to die this one. Fortunately for Peon and for us, Zeus proposed a less dramatic punishment and changed the young doctor into the flower he had discovered: a peony. Also famous for its bright colors, its shades and shades have also inspired a legend that continues to exist in our modern world, through the expression: “blush like a peony”.
The story here is about the nymph Péone, who like most naiads was incredibly beautiful. Courted by all the gods, she had the bad idea to do a little too much and break the divine code of modesty. A false step, provoking the indignation of the all-powerful, who then decided to change it into an extraordinary flower: a peony. As for its error of judgment, to inscribe it forever in history, they gave its petals the color of shame, red. Hence the term...
Peony in the Land of the Rising Sun
Asia is full of myths and legends, which teach us a little more about our favorite flower. The first, partly tells why spring is the favorite season for peonies. In China during the Tang Dynasty, on a very cold winter day, Empress Wu Zetian after drinking a little too much wine, demanded flowers from her garden to bloom during the night, to satisfy her in the early morning. . The flower calendar was apparently the least of his worries...
Her name meaning "she who disciplines the sky", the latter was convinced that no flowering variety would dare to disobey her. The next day, only the peony had decided to do as it pleased and to wait for spring. The queen of the season then appears for the first time, like a flower with a strong character. Mad with rage, the Empress exiled all the peonies in the country to Luoyang, where they finally blossomed proudly, giving rise to a marvelous flowery spectacle. The city has since been the capital of the peony, and organizes a festival dedicated to it every year.

The modern history of the library can be traced back to 1802, the time of the restoration of the Benedictine order. The first records referring to the library date back more than a thousand years, so except for a few interruptions, it is the oldest and most valuable art collection in the country. The library now consists of approximately 400,000 volumes compared to the original 70-80 codices. In terms of topics, the collection includes every conceivable scientific discipline. The language is more often Latin, but the books were also written in Hungarian, French and German. After the restoration of the Benedictine order, the library also made great strides, it began to prosper, and the collection reached its great size through purchases, collections and legacies. The Abbey, its library and its spiritual value was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Suwon Station, 19:31. A heavy freight train, led by a Korail 8500-series electric locomotive or similar, moves along the Gyeongbu Line during peak hour. The formation is repetitive: a sequence of bulk silos following a fixed order through the station’s outer tracks. This is the industrial backbone of South Korea moving through one of its busiest urban corridors.
Beyond the station platforms, a dense overhead catenary grid meets the rigid geometry of the rails. Repetition, timing, weight, and noise are compressed into a narrow urban bottleneck of steel columns and wiring. What appears chaotic at first glance is a system sustained by strict precision, where heavy logistics move through the city with no margin for error.

Am I
Am I still tough enough?
Feels like I'm wearing down (down down down down)
Is my viciousness losing ground (ground ground ground ground)
Am I taking too much?
Did I cross the line? (line line)
I need my role in this
Very clearly defined
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself
Now it's starting up
Feels like I'm losing touch
Nothing matters to me
Nothing matters as much
I see you left a mark
Up and down the skin (skin skin)
I don't know where I end
Or where you begin
I need your discipline
I need your help
I need your discipline
You know once I start I cannot help myself
I cannot stop myself
Once I start I cannot stop myself
And you know
Once I start I cannot stop myself
And you know
Once I…
Memories of my Canoe Buddy
A good friend of mine passed way. It's been a little while, but I have so many fond memories. We religiously spent a week or two in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area every year and he was my tent mate and paddle and portage buddy. The BWCA is a true wilderness covering more than one million acres, with 1,100 lakes and 1,200 miles of canoe routes. No engines are allowed , your paddle is your only transportation, and anything you want to take with you – tent, sleeping bags, food, and so on must be carried on your back across miles of portages in between lakes. You might not see another person for days. Nothing but quiet and nature is a mental reset and truly relaxing. The only problem was every year it seemed we over estimated how much territory we could cover. A disciplined schedule was required.
This is a story I wrote years ago about one of our best days ever. It made me smile so allow me to share:
------
Our plan was to get up, have a quick breakfast, tear down camp and get an early start on the day. Ahead of us was a difficult but scenic 13 mile, 4 portage leg of our canoe trip that we had mapped out around the campfire the night before. We woke at dawn, right on schedule. Boiling water, brewing coffee and frying up a skillet of hash brown potatoes and eggs also went off without a hitch. The plan wasn’t really threatened until we wandered down to the edge of our gorgeous lake and sat down for breakfast on a perfectly-situated rock in a warm sunbeam. Somehow that hard rock with a view just got more and more comfortable.
While we continued to discuss the difficult task ahead, and the agreed upon need to get an early start, a beaver silently swam by hauling freshly chewed branches to his home on a small island. We talked and laughed and admired the beaver’s energy and the gorgeous day long after the coffee was finished and the Grey-Jays and chipmunks had picked over the potato scraps.
We had almost used up the extra 20 minutes we had given ourselves to watch the slowly rising sun burn the fog off the glassy water, when the beaver swam back from the island empty handed. And only 20 minutes later we spotted him again pushing another load of freshly cut branches to the island by the exact same route. Fascinated, we made time in our grueling schedule to more closely study his efforts. We could practically set our watches to his energetic construction timeline. He eagerly swam back and forth and back and forth at almost exact twenty minute intervals.
We were impressed that he could keep up his clock-work like routine for an hour, and then two. By our close observation, he did not deviate even once from his disciplined, steady work schedule until well after lunch.
I miss you buddy!
"And discipline remains massively
Yes, and not with you
Derek, this star nonsense (yes, yes)
Now, which is it?
And I′m sure of it
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell, blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here"

So much of life is built quietly,
far from applause.
Strength.
Grace.
Confidence.
Endurance.
Most of it is formed in private moments no one remembers seeing.
The world often celebrates arrival,
but rarely notices the lonely discipline required to get there.
She disappeared beneath the trees still skipping,
moving deeper into the shade,
carrying her rhythm with her.

This adult Coot was diving and getting food for two chicks. For whatever reason, it took after one of the chicks, grabbed its head and gave is a sharp shake. The chick was released immediately and appeared none the worse for the experience. I can only guess the adult was making a point about dining etiquette or something.
in the quiet of winter, the vineyard at pollenca rests. the bare vines line up in disciplined rows, stretching towards the steadfast tramuntana mountains that stand guard in the distance. the starkness of the leafless vines against the soil speaks of the season's restful pause, a time for rejuvenation before the burst of new life. the silhouette of wooden stakes and wire frames cast a graphic pattern upon the land, a natural grid that waits patiently for the return of spring. this monochromatic landscape, with its subtle textures and the promise of growth, captures the serene beauty of the dormant season, a tranquil prelude to the abundance that follows.

In Kyiv-Mohyla Academy of those days they taught a wide variety of disciplines. Mathematics was a part of them and it included a bunch of subjects: algebra, geometry, optics, dioptrics, physics, hydrostatics, hydraulics, architecture, mechanics and mathematical chronology.
In the XVIIIth century it was Pier Brulion who taught mathematics in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He was the French who arrived in Kyiv with the purpose of teaching children French but turned out to be a talented math teacher. Unfortunately, we know very little about that teacher but we can say for sure that he did not lack creativity. Who else could display one of the study aids for mathematics in the courtyard of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and another one right on the central market-place of the city? That's right, in Kyiv there are two sundials designed by Pier Brulion: the second one adorns the pillars of the rotunda over the Fountain of Samson on Kontraktova Square.
