A couple of miles south of Barlow ND, the train drops down a little stairstep so typical of branchline railroads in the prairies. Not a lot of money was spent on dirtwork when they were built around the turn of the last century and no need to change it up now.

The pair of de-turboed GP40's makes light work of the train and they sound great.

The urban construction fence to keep workers in and photographers out! LOL

There are dozens of shot opportunities along Highway 83 which is just off to the right. You can pick and choose at your leisure pretty much.

The roller coaster nature of the railroad is evident here. Soo Line didn't spend much money on dirtwork when these branchlines were built.

Or what I do when I'm not working.

One of the sewer lines on our house was never connected to the street. The 4" drain line was connected to a holding take - sort of like a septic system, but it has no leach field. Time to change that (after being here for over 30 years).

After digging around a while, I located where the drain excited the house. It was in a good spot for continuing the new pipe in a straight line. The new trench shows that path. After leaving this little shed, the new pipe travels about 20 more feet before connecting to an existing line, which in turn connects to the street. It's a long run.

The small drain line on the left and above the 4" line is the drain for the bathroom sink and shower. That will be connected to the main line when all the work is finished.

I lied. I'm never not working.

This is the Sensory Garden at KU; a place I've posted numerous photos from. I visit this lovely location many times throughout the year. The new structure at the end of the walkway was just completed this past Spring semester by our School's Dirtworks Studio. The column you see at the front holding up the roof and the short walls at the back were constructed from rammed earth. The students who designed and built this structure involved me on a small scale by consulting with me during the design process on what I wanted to see in this structure. They probably got tired of me begging them not to close it in or block the light from the west in the early evening. I'm very pleased with the final result and so proud of our students. Thanks to Professor Chad Kraus and all of the students for creating such a beautiful place to sit and enjoy my campus sanctuary. In Lawrence, KS.

Walking into the house from the car a horn on the other side of town tipped me off to a late 517. I was glad I grabbed the camera when the CN 5500, SD60F series engine, rounded the corner. A new area for sorting and stacking stick rail was graded this week as part of a general clean up along the CN. The fresh dirtwork here is where the east end house track switch was until a few years ago. August 15, 2014.

New employment, new headaches

This view is from a little further down than the previous photo, showing some of the dirtwork being done right where the expansion will be. Maybe they're putting in those big drains for the new produce area, since this is probably right about where that department will end up in the new part of the building.

SET 4 – Colony Crossing Kroger, Pre-Remodel

Wrapping everything up for this series, as promised, here’s a look at that expansion space, with a good view of how everything looks behind the construction fencing. Those tarps block some of our view, but are still surprisingly see-through, and I think I managed to stitch together two separate images into one mostly seamless photo pretty well here! At this point in time (August 2020), post-demolition of the shopping center stores, this area was still just in dirtwork mode. But the actual construction wouldn’t take too long to start up in earnest, and the grand reopening of the store – following completion of the expansion, as well as the full-store remodel to Artisan – took place just about a year later, in late August 2021.

That linked video gives you a bit of a sneak peek around the store for those of you who are antsy and impatient (!), but otherwise, be sure and stick around for my full post-remodel stour in the hopefully not-too-distant future! Artisan has not made its debut on my photostream yet, but it will very soon. I still have one more store I want to take y’all too in the meantime, though (rather than just following the same 3 or 4 stores pre- and post-remodel over and over and over), so we’ll head there next: be sure to leave any guesses in the comments!

NEXT TIME – fast-forwarding to our next HLT remodel visit…
