Dora May Broadbent, OBE (7 February 1923 – 23 July 2014), known as Dora Bryan, was an English actress of stage, film and television
Bryan made her stage debut as a child in a pantomime in Manchester and, encouraged by her mother, joined the Oldham Repertory while still a teenager. After spending six years honing her craft there, she moved to London to develop her stage career, becoming a regular performer in the West End. Cast in a production of Noël Coward's Private Lives, the actress was encouraged to adopt a stage name by Coward himself. She opted for Dora Bryant, which she often said was inspired by a box of Bryant and May matches which were lying on the table, but a typographical error left off the last letter on the theatre credits and she became Dora Bryan.
Instantly recognisable from her voice, which became a trademark of her performances, she followed many of her theatre contemporaries into film acting, generally playing supporting roles. She often played women of easy virtue—for example in The Fallen Idol (1948), one of her earliest films, and Ealing's The Blue Lamp (1950). She appeared in similarly stereotypical female roles in other films, for example Gift Horse (1952), The Cockleshell Heroes (1955), The Green Man (1956) and Carry On Sergeant (1958).
She appeared in a cameo role on the BBC radio series Hancock's Half Hour, in an episode commonly known as "Cinderella Hancock" (1955). She appeared in the film A Taste of Honey (1961) which won four BAFTA awards including Best Actress for Bryan and Best British Film. In 1963 she recorded the Christmas song "All I Want for Christmas Is a Beatle", which reached no. 20 on the UK charts. She played the Headmistress in The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery (1966), and she starred in her own television series for the BBC, According to Dora (1968–69).
In 1955 Bryan received theatrical recognition when, after the first night of a production of A. P. Herbert's The Water Gypsies, the billing outside was changed to "Dora Bryan in A.P. Herbert's The Water Gipsies". It was Bryan's first venture into West End musical comedy, in which she played Lily Bell, and was a personal triumph. The show's hit songs, sung by Bryan, included "Why Did You Call Me Lily?", "You Never Know With Men", and "It Would Cramp My Style".
Bryan appeared in the Anglo-Argentine Hitchcockian thriller, Apartment Zero (1988). The film was directed by Martin Donovan and starred Hart Bochner and Colin Firth. Bryan plays the role of one of two eccentric characters (the other was played by Liz Smith) described by The Washington Post as two "tea-and-crumpet gargoyle-featured spinsters who snoop the corridors". It featured in the 1988 Sundance Film Festival.
Throughout her career, she continued to perform on the stage, often appearing in musicals such as Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1962) and Hello, Dolly! (1966–68). She also headlined a number of stage revues such as The Dora Bryan Show (1966), "My Name Is Dora" (1967) and An Evening with Dora Bryan and Friends (1968). She made her Broadway debut as Mrs. Pierce in Pygmalion (1987), starring Peter O'Toole and Amanda Plummer. Other notable credits include her first Shakespearean role, Mistress Quickly in The Merry Wives of Windsor (1984), Mrs. Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer (1985) and Carlotta Campion (singing "I'm Still Here") in the 1987 London production of the Stephen Sondheim-James Goldman musical Follies. In 1992, she toured the country including appearing at the Theatre Royal, Brighton, her home town, and starred in London's West End at the Vaudeville Theatre in Kander and Ebb's 70 Girls 70 to great acclaim. At this time she joked with Terry Wogan and Michael Barrymore on their TV shows that she was aged not 70 but "sixty-several" and could still kick her leg higher than her head, which brought much audience laughter. She appeared in the 1994 revival of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party.
In 1999, she made an appearance in the Victoria Wood sitcom Dinnerladies. In 2000, she joined the cast of the long-running BBC comedy series Last of the Summer Wine as Aunt Ros Utterthwaite, and in 2001 she was a guest star on Absolutely Fabulous as June Whitfield's on-screen friend Dolly (originally called Milly). She received a BAFTA nomination in 2002 for this role.
A few years later in 2005 her role in Last of the Summer Wine came to an end. At about the same time, she stopped making films. Her last screen appearance was in the short film Gone to the Dogs (2006) with Antony Booth. In 2006, she was intended to appear both in the comedy Rock-a-Hula Rest Home at a pub theatre in Brighton, and in the comedy There's No Place Like a Home, but in both cases she had to withdraw because of her inability to memorise her lines.
Bryan once owned Clarges Hotel at 115–119 Marine Parade on Brighton's seafront, which was used as an exterior location in the films Carry On Girls and Carry On at Your Convenience. She and her husband lived there for more than 40 years but were forced to sell the bulk of the building because of bankruptcy, but they retained a flat with a sea view on the first floor for many years. Still maintaining its original structure, the rooms of the hotel have been reconverted into flats. By 2013 she was a wheelchair user and resided in a nursing home in Hove in frail health. Dora Bryan died on 23 July 2014 at the age of 91.

LMS location north right of junior playground. Door on right leads to dining area / servery, door on left to kitchens. Further left, not in photo, was swimming baths. Most (1970s) boys weren't allowed in kitchens but myself and a few classmates (Chris Kirkbride, Gary Kitchen, Chris Miller & Trevor Rowland) got the job of delivering teacher's lunches so we could get in. This wasn't altruism or being teachers' pets; dinnerladies rewarded us with goodies such as clandestine roast potatoes, and when we finally got to the lunch queue to feed ourselves we could go straight to the front and get more than generous portions.
Totally shocked to hear of the death of one of my favourite comediennes.
Just a quick photo tribute.. I don't tend to buy many DVDs but "dinnerladies" was the first DVD box set I bought.
She was a pioneering female comedy genius, talented writer and musician. I shall be re-watching these DVDs again and no doubt crying with laughter at some of the best moments.
I'm also going to use this for my 116 photos of 2016 project, number 111 "something that makes you cry".

Most British schools had them.. Dinner ladies..
Found Photograph - Dated July 1964 on reverse.

Unknown ladies found in a deceased friend's photographs.

I love a random bespoke request!
These cupcakes were made for a friend who has been working as a primary school dinner lady/playground supervisor...hence the silver whistles! She was leaving her job and wanted to give a gift to the other ladies.
Vanilla cupcakes with surprise raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream filling, whistles (edible) handmade in sugarpaste.
See next photo for how they were presented!
The "dinner lady" whistle cupcakes in the last photo were individually boxed in acrylic display boxes.
And what better to go with them but a "Keep Calm - I'm a dinner lady" giant gingerbread?
I had a lot of fun with these...
But served with a smile. I was almost mown down by about 20 trolleys taking lunch to the patients in the Royal Gwent Hospital, whilst trying to photograph some paintings in the corridors. Most were camera shy, she wasn't. I am going to call here Maureen. No wait, I can read her badge. Meet Christine.
Another lovey dinner lady at our school. Because I wasn't teaching on my last ever day, I wandered the campus, saying goodbye. Twenty years is a long time to be in one school. Everyone was kind enough to let me snap at least one goodbye shot. This is one of my favourites. The light in the kitchen was great. All I did was convert to b&w. The rest was sooc. This lady fits my mental image of Chaucer's 'Wife of Bath.'

Announcing the publication of my latest book:
"School Work: one day in the life of an outstanding secondary school".
A photograpic journey into the daily work of an inner-City secondary school in the UK.

I personally cant help but see this photo (of Dover.. the UK's main port for incoming immigration and also where rejected applicants are sent to) and think of the feeling of joy many people feel to have finally come to a land where they can just be. But also where a lot of people are left broken from finding out they are going to be sent back to the conditions they tried so hard to escape from.
Are countries in the west really overpopulated by immigrants? Oh please! I will gladly spit at anyone in the face if they truly believe our countries are being overrun by immigrants. The only reason these countries run properly is because of immigration. If it wasn't for immigration, they wouldn't have the luxuries they're so accustomed to, and that's the truth of it.
If you for a second think it's immigrants who are to blame for the lack of jobs for English people in this country, ask yourself... do you REALLY want to be a cleaner at a school? Or a dinnerlady? Do you really want to do just any job or is it that you cant get your perfect job? Cos I got news for you, those people didnt grow up dreaming of being a cleaner.
I recommend for everyone to watch a docu-drama by Michael Winterbottom called "In This World".
Birthplace of Thelma Barlow (née Pigott); born 19th June 1929. She was famous as Mavis Riley (Wilton) in Coronation Street from 1971 -1997 and for being Dolly Bellfield in Dinner Ladies.
Thelma’s father Thomas Richard Pigott was born in Middlesbrough in 1889. On the 1891 census the family are living at 36 Vaughan Street. By the 1911 census the family were living at 56 Cargo Fleet Road. Thelmas' father died five weeks before she was born.
Thanks to Mandy for spotting that this is Shobna Gulati - better known as Sunita from Corrie - becaue (as usual) I hadn't got a bloody clue. (She also played Anita in Dinnerladies - doh!)

A flying visit home to Manchester to wish my Gran a happy 93rd birthday, and the chance to head into Urmston. Urmston is famous for only three things! (Apart from me...erm)
1) Nurse G-Gladys Emmanuel from Open All Hours, actress Lynda Baron hails from here.
2) "I'm from Urmston me" is an iconic line from the BBC TV show "Dinnerladies".
3) Last, but by no means least, "Over The Rainbow" winner Danielle Hope is a Urmston girl
Back in the 1960's, this was also where the footballers of Manchester United and Manchester City would live.
To me, it's simply home!

This is Mandy.
She was a dinner-lady at my junior school in Swindon.
Back in the 1980s I bet her £100 that I would turn out to be a doctor specialising in gunshot wounds and break-dance injuries.
She's come to collect.

The Maasai adults were very anti-photography (still, I was told, believing a camera could take your soul), but it didn't bother this wonderful dinner lady at Kimuka Primary, who was happy to pose for us in her traditional outfit.
She had a blinkin' ridiculously long surname!!
