A pair of SN74LS181N 4-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) ICs. These two were manufactured by Motorola, during week 12 (March 21- 27) of 1982.

The 74181 holds an important place in the history of computer development, as it was the first IC to implement an entire ALU on a single chip. Among the computer designs into which it was incorporated are the PDP-11 (Flickr | Wikipedia) and VAX 11/780 (Flickr | Wikipedia); both manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation.

The VAX 11/780 has special significance to me, as during my first year of college I helped to dismantle — and, sadly, dispose of — one that had been decommissioned. I'm still haunted by that, to this day.

This is the assembly drawing for a high-school electronics project that I designed in 1982. (25 years ago today!) The Tele-Timer started counting 100ths of a minute from the time you pressed the reset button. This device was used to time long distance phone calls.

I consider this to be one of my very first designs. Everyone else in electronics class just built kit projects. I was determined to come up with something useful of my own making.

This is the control logic for a digital analog clock. My plan is to mount a series of LEDs on the blade of a small electric fan. The circuitry in the photo is responsible for turning the LEDs on and off in such a manner that the hands of an analog clock appear to hover in mid-air. The seconds, minutes, and hour hands are all included. There is also an option for a very fast input clock to manually wind the clock, so to speak.

This circuit is really just a bunch of clock dividers, 8-bit counters, and comparators.

I've been thinking a lot about square waves recently...and had some resistors handy...viola!

Older photo (she is almost 3 years old here) and is one of my favorites...

She spent over 30 minutes experimenting and learning on this control panel having a great time. I couldn't be more proud! :-)
