Hommel op bezoek bij het vingerhoedskruid
A bumblebee (or bumble bee, bumble-bee, or humble-bee) is any of over 250 species in the genus Bombus, part of Apidae, one of the bee families. This genus is the only extant group in the tribe Bombini, though a few extinct related genera (e.g., Calyptapis) are known from fossils. They are found primarily in higher altitudes or latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, although they are also found in South America, where a few lowland tropical species have been identified. European bumblebees have also been introduced to New Zealand and Tasmania. Female bumblebees can sting repeatedly, but generally ignore humans and other animals

a Common Foxglove / Roter Fingerhut (Digitalis)
in our garden - Frankfurt-Nordend
'The alarm bells are ringing for our burning planet ... !'
Actually I myself prefer the word 'prodigy' rather than 'monster' to describe this wonderfully interesting and rather rare anomaly of the common Foxglove, Digitalis purpurea. Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century already experimented with Digitalis that has this 'peloric terminal flower' ('peloric' is from the Greek for monster or prodigy). It seems that it is caused by a simple Mendelian recessive gene that is sometimes 'empowered' by an environmental shock of some sort; perhaps in this case the curious ups-and-downs of this year's Spring weather. Others say it's caused by too frequent inbreeding as might occur within a Horticultural Garden. In any case, this terminal flower of a Digitalis stalk is quite amazing and not at all usual in Nature.
Taken at the end of August 2020, in a field. I was originally trying to photograph some cows and calves, but they were on higher ground and I couldn't get close enough for my camera to do them justice. Looking around, my eye was caught by this beautiful foxglove hiding at the edge of a hedge. Did a bit of editing in Topaz and the new PicMonkey - hope you like it !
I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to have a look, you're really appreciated. I am sorry I am so slow to respond these days - lockdown has increased my workload on Flickr as I'm sure you can imagine !
Thank you to you all for helping this image reach Explore on January 19, 2021. How kind you are !

The plant contains the glycosides: digoxin and digitoxin (digitalin) and is very toxic. Digoxin is extracted from the leaves of biennial plants and is used in the treatment of certain cardiac arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation) and (increasingly less) in the treatment of heart failure.
