Did you know: The purple finch won over the New Hampshire hen to become the official bird of the so-called Granite State via the 1957 legislature.

Did you know, that gerberas, like the sunflowers, always turn towards the sun?

Did you know that no two people can see the same rainbow. Sounds like some mythological curse but actually it involves simple physics. The light refracted by the same rain drop is at a different angle according to your vision and is at a different angle according to the next person’s vision as both of you can never be at the exact same spot at the same time. Taken in the Moloaa Forest during a thunderstorm on the island of Kauai.

Thank you for taking the time to take a look at my photos and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great weekend my friends :)

Elephants are among the most intelligent of the creatures with whom we share the planet, with complex consciousnesses that are capable of strong emotions. Across Africa they have inspired respect from the people that share the landscape with them, giving them a strong cultural significance. As icons of the continent elephants are tourism magnets, attracting funding that helps protect wilderness areas. They are also keystone species, playing an important role in maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystems in which they live.

During the dry season, elephants use their tusks to dig for water. This not only allows the elephants to survive in dry environments and when droughts strike, but also provides water for other animals that share harsh habitats.

When forest elephants eat, they create gaps in the vegetation. These gaps allow new plants to grow and create pathways for other smaller animals to use. They are also one of the major ways in which trees disperse their seeds; some species rely entirely upon elephants for seed dispersal.

On the savannahs, elephants feeding on tree sprouts and shrubs help to keep the plains open and able to support the plains game that inhabit these ecosystems.

Wherever they live, elephants leave dung that is full of seeds from the many plants they eat. When this dung is deposited the seeds are sown and grow into new grasses, bushes and trees, boosting the health of the savannah ecosystem.

Sidenote: (This kind of digital art is certainly not one of my strengths, I don't use photoshop so cutting out the model to place into a background wasn't as easy as I thought. I still have much to learn with this but felt proud enough with what I had achieved to publish this with regards to the subject. Elephants face so many more threats than loss of habitat, as do many more wild life species.)

Thankyou in advance for your support, faves, comments and awards!

I do appreciate you all ❤️

You might believe it if you heard it from a friend

That approximately 75% of the world's crops depend on pollinators?

That 1/3 of the world's food supply relies on bees?

That 1 single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers in a day?

That bees are declining at a rapid annual rate?

That YOU can help save the bees?

The Red-winged Blackbird is a highly polygamous species, with one male having up to 15 different females making nests in his territory.

A male fiercely defends his territory during the breeding season.

Some birds may travel as far as 80 km (50 mi) between the roosting and feeding sites.

In the wild, red-winged blackbirds live an average of 2 years.

The oldest recorded red-winged blackbird in the wild lived for 15 years and 9 months.

I found this male along the shore of Lake Kissimmee!

Did you know that there are two distinct subspecies? " Nominate purpureus" resides in the northeast and the boreal forest of southern Canada; the male has longer wings and is brighter overall, the female has a bolder head pattern and white underparts. The as shown in pic, the Pacific coast " californicus" male is less bright and has a brownish wash on its back and sides; the female is much puffier underneath with a less bold face pattern and more blurred back streaking.

An Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) perches on a sycamore branch in Arizona. These guys are so cute. Did you know they are the world's lightest owl? Our ranch had elf owls that called every night, and I took some night walks to try and see them. This individual gave us stellar views!

Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky was a Russian chemist and photographer. He is best known for his pioneering work in colour photography and his effort to document early 20th-century Russia.

Using a railroad-car darkroom provided by Tsar Nicholas II, Prokudin-Gorsky traveled the Russian Empire from around 1909 to 1915 using his three-image colour photography to record its many aspects. While some of his negatives were lost, the majority ended up in the U.S. Library of Congress after his death.

Starting in 2000, the negatives were digitised and the colour triples for each subject digitally combined to produce hundreds of high-quality colour images of century-ago Russia.

Did you know that Pine Siskins can survive in very cold temperatures? The metabolic rates of this species are typically 40% higher than a "normal" songbird. When temperatures plunge as low as -70 degrees C or -94 degrees F, they can accelerate that rate up to five times normal for several hours! (CornellLab)

Did you know the Pacific Ocean is what the United States is between the Atlantic Ocean and...?

Did you know that the red pigment in the face is not produced by the bird but is acquired through their diet of

insects that themselves acquire it from plants.

The Western Tanager is a medium songbird native to the Americas, and is considered a relative to cardinals. Preferred breeding habitats include coniferous and mixed woodlands found in western North America, including the Mexico-U.S. border and southern Alaska. Nests are cup-shaped and built in a conifer’s horizontal branch. During winter months, this species will migrate to central Mexico, Costa Rica and southern California. Food is gathered high in the trees of the forest, and insects are sometimes caught mid-flight. Diets consist of fruits, berries and insects. The conservation rating for the Western Tanager is Least Concern.

Did you know there are more shopping trollies in the canals of Birmingham...than in Venice.

Did you know that spending time in the forest ist good for the immune system? It reduces inflammation and increases the number of killer cells.

How awesome is that?!

It's so sad that most of the forests around where I live are not well prepared for climate change. If we don't manage to limit heating of the earth, they will most likely die.

If you care about the environment and climate, consider joining the group "flickr for future": www.flickr.com/groups/flickr-for-future/ :)

Did you know that a woodpecker's tongue is so long that it coils around the back of its skull? It also protects the bird's brain from injury during high-speed pecking.

I was surprised to see the Horse Lubber grasshopper casually consuming this acorn. Of coarse it has no need for urgency because they have no predators outside of walkers on the sidewalk and cars on the road. I understand they really, really, task bad.

Did you know that this daisy is not one flower. It has big showy petals to attract pollinators but the bright yellow centre is actually a mass of compound flowers.

Let me share a secret to some here.

Did you know that during Autumn, we have a changing of the leaves in Florida also? Of course, not to the extent to the states north of us, but we do have a significant change. (More so in North Florida)

This picture was taken in Chipley, Florida. Many, many years ago, I would swim in this lake as a young fellow. It is known as Blue Lake Park and is a very nice place for families who want to have a picnic and go swimming. There is playground equipment for children too.

I'm sure you will notice the moon already coming out.

One more thing - I live about one mile from here and am able to take my grandchildren here for them to enjoy it as much as I did when I was their age.
