. . . The summer row boat and sailboat sit alone on the beach now, as the warm October air creates fog over West Lake. Probably it is time to store them away . . . *sigh*

. . . Now that the Cherry Festival is over, the harvest of many of the sour cherries (I think?) will happen. Driving around Old Mission is a treat seeing the orchards loaded with red!

. . . One of the things I like best about Point Betsie are the rocks! There's always the outside chance of finding a Petoskey Stone, but the noise they make, and the chance of finding that perfect skipping stone are there also! I would of thought that there wouldn't be too many left after my brother and I threw them all in as kids, but I guess a few are left yet . . .

. . . Did I fall asleep during one of your exciting lectures again? It won't happen again, I promise!
Me: Yea right! That's what happens when it's afternoon, your stomach is full, and the sun is bright in your eyes.
Actually, this is probably the same Snowy Owl I shot last week on exactly the same little patch of snow! He's got this spot reserved in case of a green/brown Christmas!

. . . After two minutes and forty seconds of totality, the first glimpse of the sun coming around the edge of the moon produces a starburst effect known as the "Diamond Ring"!
Everyone around me began clapping and cheering, just like the start of totality! It was an experience that will be remembered forever!

. . . Blossom time in the cherry orchards, means lots of bees and insects, lots of fruit production, and eventually what the Up North economy depends on: Cherry Pie!

. . . This picture really sums up a lot of what I love about the American west! This view looking northeast is from Arizona Highway 64, and the unseen river in the gorge in the foreground is the Little Colorado, before it joins the main branch of the river and enters the Grand Canyon.
It was an hour or so before sunset and I was racing west to hopefully beat out the rain and get a nice sunset shot of the main canyon. Although I did not get that coveted sunset shot, this one is an excellent substitute! The tones, colors, and range of vision in the west is unparalleled! Just editing this one makes me wish I could go back soon! The next trip I will sit at this very spot and watch the colors change until dark, and listen to the coyotes as they sing!

. . . This is a different female Snowy Owl from the tree sitter I recently posted, and it's far from a natural setting. What I found interesting about this bird is that she had recently eaten!
Notice the blood spots around her beak and above her right eye. Usually Snowys will clean up their feathers in fresh show, but on top of this roof, that did not happen.

. . . I am jealous that some people are putting up Christmas decorations now. At least I have white lights around the fire pit at the cabin to console me!

. . . This flower gets it's name from the leaves, which resemble the mottled pattern on the side of a trout. Amazing how all of these flowers just popped open in a single week!

. . . This Snowy Owl's talons look razor sharp, and if I were a small duck in this pond, I would be very worried! The ponds are not totally frozen over yet, so the ducks and the owls remain here yet!

. . . And the crowds are back! I arrived at Pierce-Stocking this morning at 10:04 AM, and the line was already long to get into the scenic drive. This was the scene from Stop #9.

. . . Tried a new lens tonight looking for a meteor from the Orionids. I didn't catch any, but I was impressed with how bright the Milky Way stood out here in Colorado! The light on the field in the foreground is from our condo building and the pool area, I need to get out into the wilderness with the coyotes next time!
I also have a "shake" issue even though I used a wireless remote and a good tripod, will have to experiment to find out what is causing this. Using a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 18-300 lens.

. . . Taking a break in my favorite room at the former Traverse City State Hospital. Our tour lasted 4.5 hours and carrying my gear and tripod through that place was taxing! I guess if I were a patient here I would hang out here as much as possible! Bright, open, good views of the grounds, and overall a very unique room!

. . . This is a special rose plant! All of my cousins probably remember our Grandma DeVries' rose patches on her house on Fulton Street in Grand Rapids. Well, this rose plant was transplanted to our Myrtle St. home by my dad when Grandma sold her house to Aquinas College, circa 1968? I am guessing.
It lived on Myrtle St. until I transplanted it to Norton Shores after my parents sold their house. So then I had it for possibly 10 years there, and then all of my 21 years here at West Lake. I do not remember it ever blooming here until this spring when Penny put some blood meal in the soil.
So this plant is at least 53 years old, at a minimum, and survived 3 transplantations, and now has many buds on it! Thanks Grandma DeVries!
. . . One more from last weekend's Traverse City Air Show with the world famous Blue Angels doing a 4 plane close encounter! Although it looks like pandamonium in the sky, the pilots know exactly who is on first, second, and third base.

. . . Usually by this time in mid-winter, the river has at least a little bit of ice along the shore, where the water is not moving so fast!

. . . Here is a tulip from Holland, Mi and here is your quickie Botany lesson for the day!
The center of the tulip with three white fused parts is the pistil, or the female part with the ovary inside. The six structures around the pistil are the male stamens with the anthers and pollen sacs at the ends.
Insects, birds, and the wind carry the pollen from the anthers to the stigma for fertilization. The six large, fringed red petals surround these structures, and now you know!

. . . One of the many vistas along this famous highway in eastern Nevada! I took this with my new Samsung cell phone in the 9:16 mode, so no more taking two or three shots and then splicing them together on computer software to get a nice panorama view!

. . . The Cherry Festival Thunderbird Air Show practice session in Traverse City started off Friday in the rain and fog. The conditions were gloomy, but there was some activity on the bay yet.

. . . This is definitely a Pure Michigan sunset, and who knows how it got down here in Destin FL?? No color editing at all, just made the image a bit sharper!

. . . The Snowy Owl has a wingspan of 5.5 feet, according to some sources. This one was shot from about 100 yards away, and I caught it right before it flopped down into the snow to catch a large mouse! (see yesterday's post)

. . . I guess I was surprised to see the deer and black squirrels mingling the other day by the feeder. This yearling stretched out it's neck to sniff the friendly little visitor, and guess what happened next! Scroll down to the next picture for the answer!

. . . While cruising the Inside Passage there is so much to see. Even in the clouds, where I saw a large eagle about to swoop down on our cruise ship and carry it off for a later meal! Do you see it?

. . . Encountered this furry guy in the zoo about a month ago in Florida. Since it was only about 45 degrees out, he was taking a snooze while standing up in the sun. I'll bet he is missing the Down Under summer right about now!

. . . The obligatory shot with shinny round ornaments!! Still searching for that sneaky Snowy Owl, but since he hasn't shown up yet, I have to be content with Christmas tree shots!

. . . I have said this before but it is fascinating for me to watch normal animal behavior! The two female Snowy Owls I encountered last week were riding the last of the ice with the waves rocking them from underneath. One of them decided it was time to move, so she spread her wings and hopped right over the tail of her sister!

With apologies to Jackie DeShannon! What did you expect from someone who taught Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology?
