An unusual geologic formation in the Eastern Sierra, the Devil's Postpile is a major attraction for the area.
Devils Tower National Monument covers 1,347 acres in northeastern Wyoming. The tower is most likely the lava neck of an extinct volcano. The Sioux called the tower Mateo Tepee, or 'Grizzly Bear's Lodge,' because legend claimed that the columns of the rock were created by the claws of a bear trying to climb the sheer walls to catch some Indians on top. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906.
The one hundred and eighty-eight photographs sent by John C.H. Grabill to the Library of Congress for copyright protection between 1887 and 1892 are thought to be the largest surviving collection of this gifted, early Western photographer's work. Very little is known about this talented, commercial photographer, but the fact that Grabill immediately set up a studio when he arrived in Sturgis, South Dakota, in 1866, suggests that he had previously acquired his photographic skills. Information printed on the photographic mounts indicates that he also had studios in Deadwood, Lead City, and Hot Springs, South Dakota, in Colorado, and possibly in Chicago, and that he was the "official photographer of the Black Hills and F.P. [Fort Pierre] R.R. and Home Stake Mining Co."

The god of good sunsets gave me this image on my most recent visit to Devil's Tower in northeastern Wyoming. Photography is for me sometimes just an excuse to get out and let nature fill my tanks again.

Livingstone Island, Zambia
Devil's Pool is adjacent to the famous Livingstone Island situated on the edge of the Victoria Falls.
During the drier months of the year, May to October, it is possible to walk along the lip of the falls. This can only be done from the Zambian side. After thousands of years of erosion, many rock pools have formed and one of them has formed right on the very edge of the sheer drop.
Over 500 million litres of water a minute cascade over the almost 2km wide falls, causing a deafening and spectacular explosion of spray which can be seen 30 miles away. This is why it is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or The Smoke that Thunders.
You can find guides who will take you on the Zambian side, at the entrance to the Falls.
