The Pyrrhuloxia or desert cardinal is a medium-sized North American song bird found in the American southwest and northern Mexico. We have gone to Arizona for several years now. Last March was the first time that we have seen this beautiful bird.

Dune 45 is a dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei.

In most cities, alleys are usually seen as places you don’t go into after dark. But, I find they make for interesting black and white photography. Like most cities, Windsor, Ontario has it’s share of deserted alleys waiting to be photographed.

Acacus desert - 1934

Empty streets, sweltering heat and a burning sun.....

The streets are deserted and it seems like no one lives here.

Only the laundry on the facades betrays that people use to live live here.

This is the lazy Sunday afternoon mood in Imperia (Liguria) when the inhabitants of the old town take their siesta.

The only sign of life are a few pigeons scurrying around looking for something edible........

While I was waiting for the sun to hit the top of the mountain I decided to grab my backup camera and walk around. I took some random shots until I came across this beauty. I think this ended up being my favourite over the Comp I was waiting for. Let me know what you think. VLOG below.

The only roses that I have seen in the desert. Unfortunately, only in the winters, but they thrive this time of year.

Photo is taken close to Chilean border, at altitude 4500m.

Captured at the amazing Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix AZ

Sunrise in Twentynine Palms, California

In the dreams that lie between sleep and wake

the hazy memories of somewhere dance

in golden light and warm embrace

On the first morning at a cottage just outside of Joshua Tree National Park, as the sunrise started to adorn the sky with light and color, I stumbled outside with my camera, barely awake, with only the toes of my feet stuffed into my shoes. After a long day of travel the previous day and a restless night, I was not exactly bouncing out the door with great enthusiasm. I stood on the porch of the cottage, watching the sky turn orange through the silhouettes of the palm trees that lined the edge of the driveway. I lazily took a few shots from there (one of those images is in the first comment below) as my body tried to convince me it really wanted to be sleeping.

My mind however, was intrigued by the path leading out between the palm trees to a low wall with a set of stairs climbing up it; I wondered what the view was like from the top of the wall. So I convinced myself to put my shoes fully on and wander out beyond the trees. I reached the wall and while briefly pondering the "why" of its existence, climbed the half dozen steps to the top of it. From that vantage point, the view opened to a nearly treeless landscape of desert, mountains, and a vast expanse of sky. I stood there for awhile, listening to the silence, watching the colors wash over the land and saturate the sky, until the sun crested the hills and they vanished into its heat and light.

I then returned to the cottage and went back to sleep, awakening awhile later to wonder if I had dreamed the sunrise. Fortunately my camera informed me that I had not :-)

Pakana Monks is a geological formation nearby Salar de Tara, in the Atacama desert, actually a mass of volcanic rock.

Thanks for the visit!

Unusual amount of rain in the South West results in many bright cactus blooms.

Seems many snake sightings as well!

“God takes everyone he loves through a desert. It is his cure for our wandering hearts, restlessly searching for a new Eden...

The best gift of the desert is God's presence... The protective love of the Shepherd gives me courage to face the interior journey.”

The Atacama desert lies between the slopes of the Andes and the pacific ocean in Chile and Peru. It is estimated to cover over 100.000 square km and is the driest place on earth.

Arriving in the desert canyon its dry and hot. Choose the path along the cliff-edge leading to a high perch. Or venture deeper into the canyon to the oasis and camp. The stream continues through a camouflaged opening to a forgotten section of the canyon.
