A daylight run down the St. Marys River is always a good thing for the laker boat crews. Here, American Steamship's MV Indiana Harbor is about to enter the famed Rock Cut on a beautiful September day. The vessel is downbound with a split load of coal out of MERC for St. Clair & Monroe, MI and after that a date at Toledo Harbor for a couple of stickers that will go on Indy's superstructure. Today, American Steamship Co. Captain Patrick "Gonzo" Bensman, 1st Mate Dan Fischer and Wheelsman Jimmy Davison have the Indy lined up down the center of the narrow cut. The distance between the keel of the vessels and the bottom of the cut is usually less than 10 feet and, at times, less than 5 feet according to the depthfinder which often results in vessels shuddering (vibrating) from the propeller action.

Lake Conroe is home to a healthy, and often sizable population of put-and-take hybrid striped bass. Hybrid stripers are hard-hitting fish, and are great to eat. We have had great luck catching the open-water roamers on Black Salty baitfish.
