While I was trying to creep up on a hawk perched in a tree, I heard Woody off to my side and spotted it just a little further out.
Of course, Red-shouldered Hawk trumps a pecker, but sadly, the hawk moved on before I could get in close enough.
Then, of course, the woodpecker flew off just as I was setting up a shot.
Thankfully, it came back, each time making quite a fuss and stuck around for several minutes at a stretch.
True story...

Every time I come across one of these, I either don't have, or don't get the camera up in time.
This one moved on shortly after a hiker with a dog came along, but at least I didn't come away from the encounter with nothing once again.
Certainly, almost, worth battling the frigid conditions.

I've never really done long exposures at night, but when I noticed the cool blue light outside my window I went out and tried a few. At first I just pointed the camera straight up to the sky for a few 3-5 minutes exposures to see what I would get. I knew with long exposures that the trees would be blurred from the wind and that the stars would start to create trails. But I didn't like what I was getting so I looked for something static and interesting. I thought my neighbors house with the light on would look good with the night time sky over head. I was worried that the light from the window would be over-exposed after a full 2 1/2 minute exposure but luckily about a minute into the shot they turned off the light. This was the best of the little session I shot tonight but I think I will have to learn a bit more about shooting at night and capturing the stars before I go out again,especially about how to get the white balance right.
