Hindus are the largest population group in Mauritius. The island has several Hindu temples. The largest is located at the sacred lake “Ganga Talao”, representing the Ganges River of India. This ancient volcano crater is tucked away in the mountains of the southwest and is surrounded by colourful Hindu temples and deities.

This four-armed beauty is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity in all forms, both material and spiritual.

The front two arms represent material pursuits, the back two arms spiritual realm.

The Batu Caves are limestone caves around 15 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur and house several Hindu temples.

The largest is the 100 meter high so-called temple or cathedral cave, in which several Hindu shrines were built and numerous statues of Hindu deities and paintings can be seen.

I took this photo in November 1983 with my analog Nikon FE camera on 35mm Kodachrome slide film, and later digitalised by using a Nikon Coolscan 4000D film scanner.

View of the Center Tower of the Angkor Wat through a window in the Ta Kou Entrance to Angkor Wat complex. (Please enlarge to the highest magnification)

Angkor Wat ("Capital Temple") is a temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world measuring 162.6 hectares. It was originally constructed in early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire and gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia (national flag) and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.

Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru. Within the moat is the outer wall 3.6 kilometers long and there are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the center of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas (deity) adorning its walls.

Morning prayer

Varanasi (India) - After his ritualized ablutions in the waters of the Ganges, the believer ends his long ceremony with a prayer to one of the gods of Hinduism. The devotee has the choice because this religion, considered one of the oldest in the world, has no less than 33 million deities. Each is called upon for a specific reason. No one stop shop. But the most important are known under the names of “gods of the Hindu trinity”: Brahma, the creator god of the world and of the living beings; Vishnu, is in charge of watching over and protecting the universe; Shiva, destructive god (he destroys the universe to recreate it); Ganesh, the elephant-headed god, represents wisdom, he is also protector of home, education and luck. Finally, Krishna is the god of compassion, benevolence and love.

This Assyrian relief comes from the royal palace in Nimrud and is made of alabaster. The area in the middle of the piece looks like it is damaged, from this distance, but it is actually an area covered writing (in cuneiform) about the king Ashurnasirpal II, reigning 883-859 BC. He built Nimrud as a new capital of the Assyrian kingdom (in Assyrian called Kalḫu).

Now on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

The town of Sorano is located in southern Tuscany, in the extreme east of the High Maremma, on the slope of a tufa hill above the Lente River, which is fed here by the smaller watercourses Cercone and Castelsereno. Like Pitigliano and Castell'Azzara, it is one of the "tufa towns" (città del tufo).

The rocky plateau of Sorano was probably inhabited since the Bronze Age. At the time of the Etruscans the area was certainly inhabited, but the Etruscan name of the settlement has not been handed down. The current place name probably derives from the Latin name of an Etruscan deity, Pater Soranus.

The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple.

It is built in the South Indian architecture| style.

Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple has been gazetted as a National Monument. Historically, the temple was the registry of Hindu marriages. At that time, only the priest of the Sri Mariamman Temple was authorized to solemnize Hindu marriages in Singapore.

Isshin-ji, Tennoji-ku, Osaka. November 11. 2019.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇ KOLYADA WINTER GOD ⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

The Slavic god Kolyada gave people a calendar, the etymology of this word is simple - Kolyada's Gift.

Kolyada not only gave a convenient system for calculating years, months and days. He was also a god who sowed peace between neighboring nations. Legends say that the peoples following Kolyada always lived in complete harmony.

Kolyada is a young deity. It symbolizes the young sun, which replaces the old one, tired from a year of work in the sky, shining during the holiday dedicated to this deity. The birth of Kolyada, the young sun, is identified with the birth of Jesus Christ. Many ancient pagan traditions were converted into a Christian way with the arrival of a new religion in the Slavic lands. Churches were built on the sites of the temples, and pagan holidays replaced Christian ones. However, Christmas, as you know, does not coincide with the winter solstice, which is celebrated on December 21-22 and is considered the first day of Kolyada.
