Boerum Hill

Brooklyn, N.Y.

This photo was captured in Paradise valley which is located in the hills behind Apollo Bay in Victoria, Australia.

As this wild Kookaburra was small with its feathers all over the place, in a nice sort of a way, I gathered it was young but maybe it was older and just having a bad hair day.

It would turn up late in the afternoon at about the same time on each of the three days we spent at Paradise Valley.

It was very comfortable in our presence and we gave it raw meat and my youngest daughter was able to pat its back . .it was lovely.

Another Kookaburra got up close and personal with my grandson, which encounter resulted in a gorgeous photo. www.flickr.com/photos/184121594@N02/48686130556/in/datepo...

The Laughing Kookaburra is a bird in the Kingfisher sub-family Halcyonine and a native of eastern Australia and is almost exclusively carnivorous, preying on a variety of small animals, lizards and snakes.

It retains the same partner for life and a breeding pair can be accompanied by up to five fully grown non-breeding offspring from previous years who assist with territory defense and help raise the parent’s new young.

Bodiam Castle Portcullis

Portcullises fortified the entrances to many medieval castles, securely closing off the castle during time of attack or siege. Every portcullis was mounted in vertical grooves in the walls of the castle and could be raised or lowered quickly by means of chains or ropes attached to an internal winch.

Alentejo - Monsaraz

Perched above the Alqueva dam, Monsaraz benefits from a strategic location and a defensive potential that has always been recognized, as the Roman, Visigothic and Celtic passages attest.

Conquered to the Moors, in the reign of D. Dinis and delivered its defense to the Templars, it is this military order that adds to it, in the 14th century, the walls and the castle from where, even today one can look at neighboring Spain or extend the view across the great Alentejo plains.

With its narrow cobbled streets, which meander among ancient houses with white walls, it offers those who pass by there a very authentic feel of an ancient and medieval Portugal.

Alentejo - Monsaraz

On Monte Calderico they settled in the 6th century BC. C. the first townsfolk, given its strategic importance for transhumance.

With the Punic wars takes place the conquest and establishment of a Roman city (the old Consaburum named by Plinio), at the foot of the Cerro Calderico, to be abandoned the town located on it. Consuegra reached a great development, being the main city of Carpetania, a key point on the roads to the north and south. Bridges, roads, a dam, an aqueduct and a circus were built. Consuegra is cited by classical authors such as Livy or Ptolemy. Through it the Roman road called "Via Laminium".

The majority of the Hispanic and Gothic population remained with the arrival of the Arabs. The castle dates back to this time. In the year 1085 Toledo falls before Alfonso VI. It seems that Consuegra had passed into the hands of Castile in 1083. In the year 1097 the son of El Cid Campeador, Diego, died in the battle of Consuegra. In this battle, the armies of Castile, commanded by King Alfonso VI, were defeated by the Almoravids commanded by Yusuf ibn Tasufin, changing hands again. It was later reconquered by Christians.

In 1150 Alfonso VII handed over his castle to his vassal Rodrigo Rodríguez. In 1183 the population, together with its alfoz, was donated by Alfonso VIII, with the approval of Pope Lucius III to the Sovereign Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta), which appointed Consuegra head of the Grand Priory of Castile and León, in La Mancha, taking the castle as its seat, and granting it the Fuero de Consuegra, a copy of the one in Cuenca. He emphasized in this period under his tutelage the defense after the battle of Alarcos in 1195. With the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, in 1212, the area finally stabilized.

The common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a wild member of the pig family (Suidae) found in grassland, savanna, and woodland in sub-Saharan Africa.

The common warthog is the only pig species that has adapted to grazing and savanna habitats. Its diet is omnivorous, composed of grasses, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, insects, eggs and carrion. During the wet seasons, warthogs graze on short perennial grasses. During the dry seasons, they subsist on bulbs, rhizomes, and nutritious roots.

Although they can dig their own burrows, they commonly occupy abandoned burrows of aardvarks and other animals. The common warthog reverses into burrows, with its head facing the opening and ready to burst out if necessary.

Although capable of fighting (males aggressively fight each other during mating season), the common warthog's primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting. The common warthog's main predators are humans, lions, leopards, cheetahs, crocodiles, wild dogs and hyenas.

Common warthogs are not territorial, but instead occupy a home range. Common warthogs live in groups called sounders. Females live in sounders with their young and with other females. Subadult males associate in bachelor groups, but live alone when they become adults. – Wikipedia

The Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus), also known as the Antarctic giant petrel, is a formidable seabird native to the Southern Ocean. It is among the largest members of the Procellariidae family, with a wingspan of up to 2.1 meters and a body length of up to 90 cm. This species exhibits two distinct color morphs: dark and light. It is an opportunistic feeder, voraciously scavenging on marine mammals, other seabirds, and fish. It is often seen trailing fishing vessels to feed on discarded bycatch. The petrel breeds in small colonies on subantarctic islands, laying a single egg per season. A remarkable defense mechanism is vomiting a foul-smelling stomach oil when threatened, which deters predators and has earned them the nickname "stinkers" among sailors.
