I saw so many seals while kayaking out in the Dungeness Bay yesterday. At one point, I counted 11 watching me from all around.
The fortifications of the town were built after the Mongol Invasion. It had four gates, which opened to the south, west, north and northeast. The plain of the town slightly slopes north, so the southern gate, which was located on the highest point, was called Upper Gate, while the northeastern gate, which was located on the lowest point, was called Lower Gate. The walls were defended by wide moats.
The trade road coming from the central regions of Hungary left the town towards Poland through the Lower Gate. From the town gate a little wooden bridge led to a half-round barbican, which still stands, surrounded by moats. From the barbican a drawbridge led across the moat. After the fortifications of the town lost their significance, the wooden bridges over the moats were demolished and a new stone bridge was raised with two 5-metres wide arches in 1821. A similar stone bridge was built to connect the barbican with the town but it had only one arch.

It is a bird in the honeyeater family, and endemic to Australia. It is grey, with a black head, orange-yellow beak and feet, a distinctive yellow patch behind the eye and white tips on the tail feathers. It's a vocal species with a large range of songs, calls, scoldings and alarms, and almost constant vocalisations. They are gregarious and territorial; they forage, bathe, roost, breed and defend territory communally.
The noisy miner is a large honeyeater, 24–28 centimetres (9.4–11.0 in) in length, with a wingspan of 36–45 centimetres (14–18 in), and weighing 70–80 grams (2.5–2.8 oz). Male, female and juvenile birds all have similar plumage: grey on the back, tail and breast, and otherwise white underneath, with white scalloping on the nape and hind-neck, and on the breast; off-white forehead and lores; a black band over the crown, bright orange-yellow bill, and a distinctive patch of yellow skin behind the eye; a prominent white tip to the tail; a narrow olive-yellow panel in the folded wing; and orange-yellow legs and feet. A juvenile can be distinguished by softer plumage, a brownish tinge to the black on its head and the grey on its back, and a duller, greyish-yellow skin-patch behind the eye.
The noisy miner is a gregarious species, and the birds are rarely seen singly or in twos; they forage, move and roost in colonies that can consist of several hundred birds
The noisy miner does not use a stereotyped courtship display; displays can involve 'driving', where the male jumps or flies at the female from 1–2 metres (3.3–6.6 ft) away, and if she moves away he pursues her aggressively.
The noisy miner primarily eats nectar, fruit, and insects, and occasionally it feeds on small reptiles or amphibians.

Interesting thing about Finland's participation in WWII is it was the only democratic country to be on the side of the Axis powers. As part of Finland's participation in WWII (Continuation war), the Finns during operations Barbarossa retook and captured areas in the Karelia region.
Wanted to try out a bunker as there were many that were along several defensive lines in Finland and the Karelia region. Credit for the trees goes to Thorsten Bonsch.
So much fun and really challenging when they start to roll and maneuver to evade the pursuit. Keeping the camera on the action as they move about the river is very exhilarating too.

When we were planning our trip and looking for interesting places and species to photograph in/around Victoria, we came across this amazing but endangered bird. From that moment, we couldn’t wait to have the oportunity to get some shots of it!
However, when we contacted Patricia Maher in late April, we found out that Philip Maher’s available dates were super limited. Since we’d already booked our internal flights, it didn’t seem doable at first. But we’d left our last day in Melbourne free, partly to avoid the risk of delayed or canceled flights and partly to enjoy the city a bit before heading back home on the 26th.
That gave us a whole day (the 25th) to go for this bird! We booked two nights in Deniliquin and braced ourselves for a birding marathon starting at 6:30 AM and possibly ending at 2 AM on the 26th (luckily, our flight home from Melbourne wasn’t until 3 PM).
Two days before the big day, we got in touch with Patricia again, and she told us the weather forecast wasn’t looking great – rain was expected. But hey, plans are plans.
The day before, we drove from Melbourne to Deniliquin (a 3-hour, 270km drive) under nonstop rain. By this point, we were beyond exhausted: after 4 weeks of birding (our longest trip ever!), dealing with an 11-hour time difference, staying in 12 different accommodations, catching 5 internal flights and 3 international ones, eating food very different from what we were used to (and often skipping meals), waking up most days at 5 AM, we almost decided to turn back.
Plus, we already had a decent collection of photos on our hard drives. Honestly, all we wanted was to head back to Melbourne, relax, and enjoy the photos we’d taken.
The idea of driving in the rain for what might turn out to be a wasted effort wasn’t motivating at all. We were this close to turning around and heading back.
Thank goodness we didn’t! Not only did the rain ease up the next day, but we also managed to spot more than 40 new species – including both the male and female of this gorgeous bird. We got hundreds of photos from all the angles and distances we wanted! The female wasn’t super cooperative (she didn’t show off her pretty legs), but the male was a real show-off and a photographer’s dream. I’ll share his photos later too.
Note 1: This is the female of the species. She’s actually more colorful than the male, though some individuals are even more vibrant than this one.
Note 2: Nope, she’s not in the nest. Fun fact about this species: it’s the male that incubates the eggs and raises the chicks. The female focuses on defending her territory and mates with multiple males.
