The witch tower in Treysa is a round tower and part of the city fortification.

The so-called witch tower dates from the 15th century. It is a late Gothic round tower with external access to the upper floor. Its protruding tin crowning is characteristic. It was part of the fortification of the lower town. It is the only largely preserved round tower in the city and once comprised four floors.

It was used in the upper part to defend the city gate and in the lower part as a dungeon. In 1609, a woman accused of witchcraft was held in the tower. Due to its historical significance as part of the medieval city fortification, it is listed as a monument. Its current location is the crossroads Steingasse/Rosengasse.

Today we visited the breeding colony of the arctic terns - a lot of trouble and noise. The birds are just starting to breed, and they have to manifest their partners and nesting places. At the same place a lot of black headed gulls are nesting, and they have already their chicks. And - most stressful thing: tourists. These people who come as close as possible to the birds to make some senseless selfies. They regret that soon because the birds are attacking them if they come too close - like this brave Daddy-tern.

This female Rufous Hummingbird worked so hard defending the feeder and grevillea plants in the yard all morning. In the afternoon, the male took over dominance of the yard. They make me tired watching how hard they work.

On Youtube there is a video of how the photo was taken. In the video area I am only at the beginning but I try to improve there as well. I would be happy if you come by and comment the video.

I saw so many seals while kayaking out in the Dungeness Bay yesterday. At one point, I counted 11 watching me from all around.

There were several juveniles eyeing her breakfast but were too afraid to get close.

A fairly large Grizzly Bear boar stands guard over the cached Elk carcass he's been feeding on.

A peaceful and beneficial garden visitor, this is a black and yellow mud dauber (Sceliphron caementarium) wasp.

Even though they have bright warning colours, these wasps are not at all aggressive like other wasps. They are solitary parasitoid wasps that build nests out of mud.

After building a cell of the nest, the female wasp captures several spiders. The captured prey are stung and paralyzed before being placed in the nest (usually 6-15 per cell), and then a single egg is deposited on the prey within each cell. The wasp then seals the cell with a thick mud plug. After finishing a series of cells, she leaves and does not return. The larva spins a cocoon and pupates. Eventually, the hatching larva will eat the prey and emerge from the nest.

Stings are rare due to their usually peaceful nature, however nests are aggressively defended.

Thanks a lot for your visit, faves and comments. Its truly appreciated!

It was a very misty morning on Thursday with a heavy frost, so I thought I'd slip over to Attenborough in the hope of seeing the Kestrel in wintry conditions. No luck there and the sun only appeared for a short time at midday before disappearing into the murk.

On the way home in the late afternoon in the flat murky light, I came across this Fieldfare, as it ate crab apples in the tree at the visitor centre end of Barton Lane, defending its fruits from the occasional Blackbird; or foraged for berries and jumped for flying insects in the trees on the other side of the track.

Thanks for viewing and thanks for your faves and comments.

Interesting thing about Finland's participation in WWII is it was the only democratic country to be on the side of the Axis powers. As part of Finland's participation in WWII (Continuation war), the Finns during operations Barbarossa retook and captured areas in the Karelia region.

Wanted to try out a bunker as there were many that were along several defensive lines in Finland and the Karelia region. Credit for the trees goes to Thorsten Bonsch.

Here is another shot of the male Rufous Hummingbird. I was watching him fighting off sparrows, common yellowthroats and some other birds as soon as they approached the branch. He only gave way to a red-winged black bird which was a little too much for him.

" “The land was defended and won by age-old ceremonies and fierce battle…. Their conflicts with each other and their neighbors, their luck with their wives and devotion to their babies… the fortunes of their sons and daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren—all these were watched season in and season out until tragedy overtook them.”

Surprisingly, this passage is not referring to Game of Thrones. It instead describes the lives of song sparrows!

Renowned ornithologist Margaret Morse Nice (1883-1974) wrote this in the opening pages of her book The Watcher at the Nest (1939), which recounts her experiences studying song sparrows in her Ohio backyard in the 1930s. She conducted these groundbreaking studies at home while raising a family of five children." blognature.org

The Battles of Song Sparrows: How a Scientific Outsider Changed How We Study Birds

By Joe Smith PhD

The past few years our state of California has suffered massive fire tragedies caused by utility power lines.

I am hearing that preparations to prevent fires this coming fire season are being impacted by the pandemic, and the usual procedures to defend ourselves during wildfires (receiving reinforcements from outside the state, healthy firefighters living together in close quarters in stations and firecamps, etc., etc.) are in doubt.
