In the 80s the workers removed asbestos from the rail carriages here. So many of them died. After so many years the complete decontamination of the site is not completed yet.

From Cocoon's Wiki:

"Earth Site X17 was one of the most irradiated zones on the planet, but Vulca Group's constant efforts and costly operations on both decontamination, water purification, and terraforming of the Site had seemingly paid off, as even some plant life can be seen on the compound; however, there seem to be different things that can be seen on this part of Earth, some have claimed to see psychic chimeras, and supernatural phenomena that seem to be a result of testing that has been all unproven.

Access to Earth Site X17 is via the Cocoon Shipping Dock 2B in Sector 1, Level Zero."

The Greenham Cold War Experience

A unique opportunity to explore parts of Greenham Common that played a key role in the Cold War, through scenes presented by professional performers. Three 15-minute scenes and a Q & A with a local historian brought the Cold War of the 1980s to life with a walk across the beautiful Site of Special Scientific Interest, filled with wildlife and the relics of military life.

The base commander's wife has been contaminated after exposure to fallout from chemical weapons. She doesn't look very pleased!

Dr. Evermor's incredible Sculpture Garden contains this beauty among hundreds more of strange, interesting, huge metal sculptures.

This is the famous Forevertron, built with 2 Thomas Edison Dynamos, lightning rods, the Apollo 11 decontamination chamber along with hundreds more parts.

It was designed to launch himself "into the heavens on a magnetic lightning force beam". At fifty feet high, 120 feet wide and weighing some 300 tons it would be quite the beam....

Earl and Daryl we’re pulling this huge sprayer behind their truck the other day. I asked them what the sprayer was for (assuming they were going out to spray a field with weed killer), and they said is was a delousing machine. “Well I will go and get the dogs then,“ I replied. Daryl said that it was actually for people as well as animals and that I should get the family together. They also said that you could bundle and get a family and/or barnyard discount.

Apparently some slick salesman told them it was a Covid Decontamination Sprayer. They bought it ... only to find that it did not kill the Covid virus. Out $500.00 and with no way to make money, Earl suggested they fill it with a mild pesticide and use it to kill lice. Such clever entrepreneurs!

I can’t believe they will have very many takers.

Now, who needs delousing?

The Auckland waterfront is a city-side stretch of the southern Waitematā Harbour coastline in Auckland, New Zealand. Previously mostly dominated by Ports of Auckland uses, from the 2000s on it is becoming increasingly open to recreational public use, with a number of former wharves being converted to office, entertainment, and later also some residential uses.

The waterfront stretches roughly from the suburb of Saint Marys Bay / the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the west to the Ports of Auckland areas in the east. However, in most usage, 'Auckland waterfront' only refers to those parts freely accessible to the public (such as around the Viaduct Basin and the Auckland CBD), and thus at the moment excludes much of the Western Reclamation and almost the whole of the Ports of Auckland area to the east.

While Auckland City technically has a second waterfront on the Manukau Harbour, this is never called 'Auckland waterfront'.

During 2006, a prolonged public discussion about the future of the waterfront was begun, first by the start of public consultation on the future of the Western Reclamation, then by the plans for Stadium New Zealand on the land of Ports of Auckland. While the plans for Stadium New Zealand were eventually scrapped (partly because of complaints of some citizens that it would block harbour views, but mostly due to its effect on port operations), the discussion had shown that Aucklanders would prefer greater access to the waterfront, which is at the moment is still industrial land / port land in large areas.

However, Ports of Auckland (the company still owning most of the Auckland wharves) noted that while it will explore plans for greater public access, it needed most of the space for the foreseeable future. As most of the Western Reclamation will not see any immediate transformation (due to ongoing commercial leases and required decontamination before future use), the sights are currently set on extending the public areas of the Viaduct Basin with a new entertainment strip along Jellicoe St to the west of it. This is to be linked by a bridge to the Viaduct and the Auckland CBD, with the bridge design possibly being internationally tendered, and for all works to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

In early 2008, ARC plans were unveiled that may see Queens Wharf, the wharf closest to the Auckland Ferry Terminal, converted into public space. Currently the wharf is used to store ripening bananas and hold import cars before fumigation treatment by Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry staff. However, plans for the specific activities are still up in the air, though a new cruise ship terminal, to support the heavily booked Princes Wharf terminal, seems likely to be part of the mix.

Commentators have remarked that the wharf has been open to the public before during its early working life, when loading took place next to strolling members of the public, recreational fishing and other uses, a kind of life as on a "European square", and that the authorities should try to recreate such a feeling by providing for compatible mixed uses. The Yokohama Passenger Terminal was held up as an example, with port, ferry and customs/immigration facilities contained within a wharf, and with a sweeping public park on the roof of the structure.

We're Here - Copy Xavier Day

Happy birthday to both you and your wife, X!

I chose to copy Requiem for a Twister which is in the comments. I seem to remember a wider/closer version which I also loved, but I can't find it. Maybe it's all in my head. It's been a while. :)

I had all kinds of bad luck with this. As soon as I set up my tripod it started to rain. And then it rained harder. I didn't have the chance to get my light or composition the way I wanted. In the rush I dropped my violin. Did you notice there is no bridge? I stepped in something smelly and somehow got it on my shoulder. I am waiting for my son to get out of the bath so I can decontaminate. Then I'm off to smell all my camera gear.

Anyway, I'm happy to have gotten this photo no matter the results because I'm copying one of my all time favorites. :)

From the Worldofdrevermor.com website: "Dr. Evermor's Forevertron® is the largest scrap metal sculpture in the world, standing 50 ft. (15,2 m.) high and 120 ft. (36,5 m.) wide, and weighing 300 tons. Built in the 1980s, it is housed in Dr. Evermor's Art Park on Highway 12, in the town of Sumpter, in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States

The sculpture incorporates two Thomas Edison dynamos from the 1880s, lightning rods, high-voltage components from 1920s power plants, scrap from the nearby Badger Army Ammunition Plant, and the decontamination chamber from the Apollo 11 spacecraft. Its creator, Tom Every (1938 - 2020), was born in Brooklyn, Wisconsin and was a demolition expert who spent decades collecting antique machinery for the sculpture and the surrounding fiction that justifies it. According to Every, Dr. Evermor® was a Victorian inventor who designed the Forevertron® to launch himself, "into the heavens on a magnetic lightning force beam.""

How to make a solution that "glows" in the dark?

All you need is a UV flashlight (e.g. for testing money) and a bit of fluorescein (e.g. from a highlighter). You don't have fluorescein? No problem: a quinine tonic (e.g. Schweppes -> next picture) is enough. Rivanol solution (available at the pharmacy, used for decontamination) also gives great results.

Quinine, fluorescein, uranine, rhodamine B (etc...) are so-called fluorescent indicators. Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance excited by electromagnetic radiation. The particles absorb electromagnetic waves, some of the energy consumed is dissipated in the form of heat, and the rest is radiated as a quantum of light. Because the emitted photon has less energy than the one that caused the excitation, its wavelength is greater than absorbed. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is used for excitation, and the emission occurs in the visible light range.

Photographed outside the Wing Headquarters Building, Greenham Common, a Grade II listed building.

The Wing Headquarters building of the former Greenham Common airbase, built circa 1985 as part of the Cold War redevelopment of the base to accommodate cruise missiles, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

Political interest: one of a group of buildings at Greenham Common specifically constructed as part of the USAF redevelopment of the base to accommodate cruise missiles in the 1980s: a key component of NATO’s strategy to maintain nuclear parity with the Warsaw Pact countries and one of only two bases nationally (the other being Molesworth in Cambridgeshire) where cruise missiles were deployed; Historic interest: the command and control building for an internationally significant Cold War airbase, designed as a conduit for orders from High Command to deploy Greenham’s cruise missiles. The decontamination suite and Battle Room in particular reflect the building’s central mission to the cruise programme. The briefing room is also part of the disarmament story following the signing by the USSR and the USA of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty. This allowed the Russians to inspect key NATO sites, including this one, until the expiry of the treaty in June 2001;

Architectural interest: a structure which reflects NATO’s policy of hardened and camouflaged specialist buildings during the Second Cold War of the 1980s. Of particular note, given its scale and remarkable completeness, is the decontamination suite, which is one of the two best (the other being within the Avionics Building at Alconbury airfield, Cambridgeshire) nationally in terms of scale and preservation;

Group value: with the 1980s cruise missile shelters and support buildings of the scheduled ground-launched Cruise Missile Alert and Maintenance Area (GAMA), also with the Grade II-listed control tower and the Grade-II listed adjacent Combat Support Building, all of which reflect the nationally significant development of the base to accommodate cruise missiles.

Gruinard Bay is a large remote coastal embayment, located 12 miles north of Poolewe, in northwestern Ross and Cromarty, and is in the former parish of Lochbroom, in the west coast of Scotland.

Gruinard Island (seen behind the outcrop of rocks on the right hand side of the image) is a small, oval-shaped Scottish island approximately 2 kilometres long by 1 kilometre wide, located in Gruinard Bay, about halfway between Gairloch and Ullapool. At its closest point to the mainland it is just over 1.1 kilometres offshore. The island was made dangerous for all mammals by experiments with the anthrax bacterium, until it was decontaminated in the late 20th century.

Gruinard was the site of a biological warfare test by British military scientists from Porton Down in 1942, during the Second World War. At that time there was an investigation by the British government into the feasibility of an attack using anthrax. Given the nature of the weapon which was being developed, it was recognised that tests would cause widespread and long-lasting contamination of the immediate area by anthrax spores. In order to limit contamination, a remote and uninhabited island was required. Gruinard was surveyed, deemed suitable and requisitioned from its owners by the British Government

Looking somewhat like a nuclear chemical warfare truck from the Cold War this is in fact part of the decontamination process for a new building on this site. It should be noted that Coventry suffered many air raids during the war and unexploded bombs are still being unearthed every few years - such as at the construction of Belgrade Plaza in 2007 and Merlin Point on Parkside in 2015.

Donned the HazMat suit and went outside and found one dandelion seed head. After decontamination, I set about mounting a seed just below the surface of some water in a plastic takeaway container, with one of those iridescent gift bags behind it. This one lit by a Viltrox 116t LED panel, that lights the background only. Broke out one of the smaller syringes and a randomly selected needle to place the water drop.

More to come on this - I tried a variety of techniques and swapped to the AD200 with cardboard tube for some flash driven ones as well.
