Sempre a poche decine dall'arco dei Farnese c'è la fontana del Mascherone. Questa fontana venne costruita nel 1653 su commissione della potente famiglia Farnese, che aveva una residenza nelle vicinanze. Il progetto fu affidato all'architetto Rainaldi. Originariamente la fontana era al centro di un piccolo slargo, che ospitò nel 1660 un teatro all’aperto (il muro retrostante fu edificato infatti alla fine dell’Ottocento). La fontana prende il nome dal suo elemento centrale: un grande mascherone in pietra, un volto grottesco e suggestivo, dalla cui bocca sgorga l'acqua.
Also a few dozen meters from Farnese Arch is the Fontana del Mascherone. This fountain was built in 1653 on commission of the powerful Farnese family, who had a residence nearby. The project was entrusted to the architect Rainaldi. Originally the fountain was in the center of a small clearing, which hosted an open-air theater in 1660 (the wall behind it was in fact built at the end of the nineteenth century). The fountain takes its name from its central element: a large stone mask, a grotesque and suggestive face, from whose mouth the water flows.

Buona parte della storia di Ushuaia è legata ai 14 km. di binari che trasportavano i detenuti del carcere ai boschi sub antartici decine di anni fa. Il treno Australe Fueguino, riattivato nel 1994 con fini turistici, ci ricorda la storia del percorso dei reclusi che andavano a tagliare la legna.
Il percorso:
Il viaggio parte dalla Stazione Fine del Mondo, 8 km, a sudovest di Ushuaia per la strada nazionale Nº 3. Il "Treno dei Reclusi" avanza verso la valle del Toro ed attraversa un ponte che incrocia il fiume Pipo dove è possibile osservare le tracce di legno del vecchio ponte.
La prima fermata si fa nella stazione "Cascata de la Macarena", dove si trova un tipico insediamento dei Yamanàs, gli aborigeni che popolavano la Terra del Fuoco centinaia di anni fa.
Da lì, si può accedere ad un belvedere che offre una vista spettacolare sulla valle del fiume Pipo.
Il treno continua il suo tragitto e s'interna nel bosco sub antartico, uno dei pochi che esistono al mondo. Lasciando indietro el Burdal, suolo caratteristico della Terra del Fuoco, si arriva al punto finale del percorso, la Stazione Parco Nazionale. Questo Parco Nazionale di 63.000 ettari si distingue per la sua combinazione di costa, montagne e boschi.

Much of the history of Ushuaia is linked to 14 km. of tracks that transported the inmates of the woods sub Antarctic decades ago. The train Austral Fueguino, reactivated in 1994 with tourism purposes, something about the story to retrace the route of the prisoners who were going to cut wood.

Gran parte de la historia de Ushuaia está vinculado a 14 kms de ferrocarril para el transporte de los presos a los bosques sub-antárticos décadas atrás. El tren Austral Fueguino, reactivado en 1994 con fines de turismo, nos permite recuperar el camino de los presos que iban a cortar leña.
La ruta:
El viaje inicia desde el extremo de la estación del Mundo, 8 kms al sur-oeste de Ushuaia por la Ruta Nacional N º 3. El "Tren de los Presos" avanza a Convalle del Toro y cruza un puente que cruza el río Pipo donde se pueden ver las huellas del viejo puente de madera.
La primera parada se realiza en la estación "Cascada de la Macarena".
A partir de ahí, se puede acceder a un mirador que ofrece una vista sobre el valle del Río Pipo.
El tren continúa su viaje y penetra en el bosque, uno de los pocos que existen en el mundo a esas latitudes. Dejando atrás el característico Burdal, el suelo de Tierra del Fuego, se llega al punto final de la ruta, el National Park Station. Este Parque Nacional de 63.000 hectáreas, se distingue por su combinación de costa, sierra y bosques.

Nel corso della propria vita, lo stabilimento Lingotto produsse decine di modelli di automobili, come la Torpedo, la Balilla, la Topolino, la Fiat 1100 R e la sportiva X 1/9 con la rivoluzionaria posizione centrale del motore. L'attività produttiva fu parzialmente interrotta nel 1939, in pieno inizio della seconda guerra mondiale, essendo la stessa fabbrica un obiettivo delle incursioni militari aeree su Torino. L'anno successivo infatti, una parte della produzione fu già spostata nel più grande stabilimento torinese, non molto lontano, chiamato Fiat Mirafiori, per lì continuare un lungo e fiorente sviluppo industriale dal dopoguerra fino agli anni ottanta.
Il Lingotto invece, fu ufficialmente spento nel 1982; l'ultimo modello in produzione fu quello della Lancia Delta prima serie del 1979.
Over the course of its life, the Lingotto factory produced dozens of car models, such as the Torpedo, the Balilla, the Topolino, the Fiat 1100 R and the sporty X 1/9 with the revolutionary central engine position. The production activity was partially interrupted in 1939, at the very beginning of the Second World War, the factory being a target of the military air raids on Turin. The following year, in fact, part of the production was already moved to the largest Turin plant, not far away, called Fiat Mirafiori, to continue a long and flourishing industrial development from the post-war period until the 1980s.
The Lingotto instead, was officially shut down in 1982; the last model in production was that of the Lancia Delta first series of 1979

Nossas orações e profundos sentimentos pelas vítimas do incêndio dentro de uma casa noturna em Santa Maria, a 286 km de Porto Alegre, região central do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.
Até o momento, 22 hs de 27 de Janeiro, constam mais de 230 mortos e dezenas de feridos, em sua maioria jovens, durante um show pirotécnico nesta madrugada.
A capacidade da boate Kiss era de 2.000 pessoas.

Mi sono rifiutato di fotografare un bene così importante totalmente ricoperto da palcoscenico, sipari vari, gradinate fatte di tavole, decine di proiettori.
Ho visto la delusione e lo sconcerto di tanti visitatori giunti insieme a me per contemplare questo teatro.

Da anni il parco archeologico soffre di carenze organizzativo-gestionali che hanno un impatto negativo sui visitatori, nonché diviene oggetto di articoli critici sui quotidiani nazionali.
Il problema maggiore è legato alla scarsa autonomia del parco, la cui autorizzazione spetterebbe alla Regione Sicilia, e di questo si dibatte vanamente da anni.
Ciò determina importanti introiti che non tornano all'Ente rendendo impossibile anche la manutenzione ordinaria, come il taglio delle erbacce o il ripristino di insegne rotte.
Inoltre continui problemi in merito all'organico causano spesso il rischio chiusura nei giorni festivi, e per la stessa ragione il percorso che conduce alla tomba di Archimede è chiuso salvo aprire grazie ad un accordo con il Comune solo nel periodo estivo.

For years, the archaeological park has suffered from organizational-management deficiencies that have a negative impact on visitors, as well as becoming the subject of critical articles in national newspapers.
The biggest problem is linked to the scarce autonomy of the park, the authorization of which would belong to the Region of Sicily, and this has been debated in vain for years.
This determines important revenues that do not return to the organization, making ordinary maintenance impossible, such as cutting weeds or restoring broken signs.
Furthermore, continuous problems regarding the staff often cause the risk of closure on holidays, and for the same reason the path leading to the tomb of Archimedes is closed except to open thanks to an agreement with the Municipality only in the summer.

Thalidomide was created by Grünenthal in 1953 and was used in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a "wonder drug" to treat morning sickness, headaches, coughs, insomnia and colds. Thalidomide was marketed in the UK under the name Distaval in 1958, and advertisements emphasized the drug's complete safety, using phrases such as “non-toxic” and “no known toxicity”.
However, in 1961 an Australian doctor, William McBride, wrote to the Lancet after noticing an increase in deformed babies being born at his hospital – all to mothers who had taken Thalidomide.
Between 1958 and 1962 tens of thousands of women throughout Europe found that the baby they were carrying unaccountably miscarried, or, worse, after they gave birth were told it was stillborn. Thousands more discovered that their babies had severe birth defects, missing arms, legs, or with severe reductions to these limbs, or even worse, damage to their internal organs, brain, heart, kidneys, intestines, genitals, etc. During 1962 record keepers began to count all of the children living who were born damaged by the drug. The only complete records are of those who survived long enough to participate in the national compensation schemes, which were established in Germany, Britain, Japan, Sweden and Australia in the 1970s. The difficulty in uncovering the full toll of the disaster begins with the unknown numbers of miscarriages and stillbirths (possibly up to ten times the number of live births), and the widespread practice of infanticide.
The Thalidomide injuries did not stop once the babies were born. At the age of fifty, the Thalidomide Trust’s records show that around half of all survivors are coping with chronic pain – mainly from muscles and joints (musculo-skeletal pain), largely as a result of the challenges of living with missing or damaged limbs. For many, their bodies are deteriorating far faster than able-bodied people. Several have been told words to the effect “your body is getting the problems of someone in their seventies”, which at forty to fifty years of age is not good news. At least a quarter are coping with developing neurological problems, tingling, numbness, and pain in their affected limbs. This means that a person may be holding a cup, for instance, and the next thing they know is it has fallen to the floor and broken, because of the numbness in their hand. For these survivors, the disaster is still slowly unfolding in their day-to-day lives.
Grünenthal scientists were not only negligent in failing to withdraw the drug when reports of problems came in, or for failing to test it according to the standards of the time, but more than most companies they were very well placed to anticipate the possibility that Thalidomide would cause birth defects.
Grünenthal initially denied claims that the drug hadn’t been extensively tested according to the standards of the time, but once the scandal became undeniable, they sought to deflect blame and limit damage.
In 1961 Thalidomide was eventually withdrawn after being found to be a teratogan - a cause of birth defects. 12 years later, the UK company Distillers Biochemicals Limited (now Diageo) – which was responsible for distributing the drug in the UK – reached a compensation settlement following a legal battle by the families of those affected.
Based on incomplete medical evidence and unrealistic expectations of Thalidomide survivors future needs this settlement has turned out to be at an inadequate level. With all Thalidomide survivors in the UK now over the age of 50, it is no longer sufficient to deal with their rising cost of living, and the dramatic deterioration of their health.
To this day, Grünenthal have never accepted responsibility for the suffering caused by Thalidomide. On September 1st 2012, The Grünenthal Group released a statement containing an apology, stating that it "regrets" the consequences of the drug, which led to babies being born without limbs during the 1950s and 1960s. Although the statement was welcomed by some Thalidomide survivors, it is still not an acceptance of responsibility. They just want to live a comfortable life, and that means Grünenthal should be held accountable and pay for their mistake financially.

Il genere Prunus conta decine di specie di alberi e arbusti, a foglia caduca o sempreverdi, diffusi in tutto il globo, appartenenti alla famiglia delle Rosaceae. Il Prunus Cerasifera, chiamato anche mirabolano, è originario dell'Europa orientale; si tratta di un arbusto o piccolo albero, alto fino a 5-6 metri, di forma tondeggiante; in marzo-aprile produce una spettacolare fioritura costituita da piccoli fiori di colore bianco o rosa. Questo pruno ha un fogliame di colore rosso intenso, che lo rende molto decorativo per tutto il periodo vegetativo. Esistono numerosi ibridi di mirabolano, molto coltivati nei nostri giardini: ad esempio P. cerasifera Pissardii, o P. cerasifera Pissardii nigra, con foglie quasi nere.
The genus Prunus has dozens of species of tree and shrubs, deciduous or evergreen, spread all over the globe, belonging to the Rosaceae family. Prunus Cerasifera is native to Eastern Europe; it is a shrub or small tree, up to 5-6 meters high, with a rounded shape; in March-April it produces a spectacular flowering consisting of small white or pink flowers. This plum has intense red foliage, which makes it very decorative throughout the vegetative period. There are numerous hybrids, widely cultivated in our gardens: for example P. cerasifera Pissardii, or P. cerasifera Pissardii nigra, with almost black leaves.

Il combustibile fossile allora era sfruttato per il fabbisogno delle centrali sudamericane ed anche imbarcato per l’esportazione.

The fourth of the 12 Caesars, Caligula — officially, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus — was a capricious, combustible first-century populist remembered, perhaps unfairly, as the empire’s most tyrannical ruler. As reported by Suetonius, the Michael Wolff of ancient Rome, he never forgot a slight, slept only a few hours a night and married several times, lastly to a woman named Milonia.

During the four years that Caligula occupied the Roman throne, his favorite hideaway was an imperial pleasure garden called Horti Lamiani, the Mar-a-Lago of its day. The vast residential compound spread out on the Esquiline Hill, one of the seven hills on which the city was originally built, in the area around the current Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

There, just on the edge of the city, villas, shrines and banquet halls were set in carefully constructed “natural” landscapes. An early version of a wildlife park, the Horti Lamiani featured orchards, fountains, terraces, a bath house adorned with precious colored marble from all over the Mediterranean, and exotic animals, some of which were used, as in the Colosseum, for private circus games.

When Caligula was assassinated in his palace on the Palatine Hill in 41 A.D., his body was carried to the Horti Lamiani, where he was cremated and hastily buried before being moved to the Mausoleum of Augustus on the Campus Martius, north of the Capitoline Hill. According to Suetonius, the elite garden was haunted by Caligula’s ghost.

Historians have long believed that the remains of the lavish houses and parkland would never be recovered. But this spring, Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism will open the Nymphaeum Museum of Piazza Vittorio, a subterranean gallery that will showcase a section of the imperial garden that was unearthed during an excavation from 2006 to 2015. The dig, carried out beneath the rubble of a condemned 19th-century apartment complex, yielded gems, coins, ceramics, jewelry, pottery, cameo glass, a theater mask, seeds of plants such as citron, apricot and acacia that had been imported from Asia, and bones of peacocks, deer, lions, bears and ostriches.

The objects and structural remnants on display in the museum paint a vivid picture of wealth, power and opulence. The classicist Daisy Dunn said the finds were even more extravagant than scholars had anticipated. “The frescoes are incredibly ornate and of a very high decorative standard,” noted Dr. Dunn, whose book “In The Shadow of Vesuvius” is a dual biography of Pliny the Elder — a contemporary of Caligula’s — and his nephew Pliny the Younger. “Given the descriptions of Caligula’s licentious lifestyle and appetite for luxury, we might have expected the designs to be quite gauche.”

The Horti Lamiani were commissioned by Lucius Aelius Lamia, a wealthy senator and consul who bequeathed his property to the emperor, most likely during the reign of his friend Tiberius from A.D. 14 to 37. When Caligula succeeded him — it is rumored that Caligula and the Praetorian Guard prefect Macro hastened the death of Tiberius by smothering him with a pillow — he moved into the main house.

In an evocative eyewitness account, the philosopher Philo, who visited the estate in A.D. 40 on behalf of the Jews of Alexandria, and his fellow emissaries had to trail behind Caligula as he inspected the sumptuous residences “examining the men’s rooms and the women’s rooms … and giving orders to make them more costly.” The emperor, wrote Philo, “ordered the windows to be filled up with transparent stones resembling white crystal that do not hinder the light, but which keep out the wind and the heat of the sun.”

Evidence suggests that after Caligula’s violent death — he was hacked to bits by his bodyguards — the house and garden survived at least until the Severan dynasty, which ruled from A.D. 193 to 235. By the fourth century, the gardens had apparently fallen into desuetude, and statuary in the abandoned pavilions was broken into pieces to build the foundations of a series of spas. The statues were not discovered until 1874, three years after Rome was made the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. With the Esquiline Hill in the midst of a building boom, the Italian archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani nosed around freshly excavated construction sites and uncovered an immense gallery with an alabaster floor and fluted columns of giallo antico, considered the finest of the yellow marbles.

He later stumbled upon a rich deposit of classical sculptures that, at some point in the horti’s history, had been deliberately hidden to protect them. The treasures included the Lancellotti Discobolus, now housed at the National Museum of Rome; the Esquiline Venus and a bust of Commodus depicted as Hercules, now at the Capitoline Museums. In short time, the sculptures were carted off, the foundation of an apartment building was laid, and the ancient ruins were reburied.

The latest excavation of the horti unfolded under the detritus of the residences, which had been evacuated in the 1970s in the wake of a building collapse. Much like the 2012 exhumation of Richard III in Leicester, England, the unburying involved a modern parking site.
Sixteen years ago, the three-and-a-half-acre property was purchased by Enpam, a private foundation that manages pensions for Italian doctors and dentists. Exploratory core drilling for a new headquarters and a six-level underground garage brought forth a wealth of first-century relics, from the type of window glass described by Philo to lead pipes stamped with the name of Claudius, Caligula’s uncle and successor.
As construction crews erected the five-story office building, archaeologists in a trench 18 feet below street level gingerly screened and scraped away soil. In a study lab across town, paleobotanists and archaeozoologists analyzed fragments, and researchers painstakingly repaired a 10-foot-high wall fresco painted with pigment made from ground cinnabar. The entire $3.5 million conservation and restoration project was underwritten by Enpam.

Ground was broken for the Nymphaeum Museum in 2017. “The new space, in the basement of Enpam, brings to light one of the mythical places of the empire’s capital, one of the garden residences loved by the emperors,” said Daniela Porro, the museum director.
What all of this does for Caligula’s seemingly irredeemable reputation is an open question. He emerges from Suetonius’s “The Twelve Caesars,” written 80 years after the emperor was bumped off, as utterly depraved: having incestuous relationships with his sisters, sleeping with anyone he liked the look of, using criminals as food for his wild beasts when beef became too pricey and insisting that a loyal subject who had vowed to give his own life if the emperor survived an illness should carry through on his promise and die.
Mary Beard, a professor of classics at Cambridge University, posited that while Caligula might have been assassinated because he was a monster, it is equally possible that he was made into a monster because he was assassinated. In “SPQR,” her rich history of ancient Rome, she argues that “it is hard to resist the conclusion that, whatever kernel of truth they might have, the stories told about him are an inextricable mixture of fact, exaggeration, willful misinterpretation and outright invention — largely constructed after his death, and largely for the benefit of the new emperor, Claudius.”
Whether Caligula got a raw deal from history is a subject of hot and unyielding debate. “There is clearly some bias in the sources,” Dr. Dunn allowed. “But even without that, it is difficult to envision him as a good emperor. I doubt these new discoveries will do much to rehabilitate his character. But they should open up new vistas onto his world, and reveal it to be every bit as paradisiacal as he desired it to be.”

Il Riassunto, Roma - Un altro tassello per la rinascita dell’Esquilino: dal sito dell’ENPAM riportiamo integralmente la notizia della ripresa dei lavori per la costruzione di un piano archeologico sotterraneo presso la sede ENPAM a Piazza Vittorio. E’ un ulteriore progetto in via di esecuzione che nel medio termine renderà sempre più unico e affascinante il Rione. Un altro ambiente di eccezionale importanza e bellezza che, dopo essere stato nascosto per secoli e secoli, sarà di nuovo a disposizione per essere visitato e ammirato da residenti, turisti e archeologi.

Inaugurata la nuova sede della Fondazione - Giovedì 19 dicembre la Fondazione Enpam ha presentato al pubblico la nuova sede di piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. A tagliare il nastro sono stati il presidente Alberto Oliveti e il sindaco di Roma Ignazio Marino. Nel corso della cerimonia inaugurale sono state illustrate le caratteristiche del palazzo che ospita i nuovi uffici. È intervenuta anche la sovrintendente per i Beni archeologici Mariarosaria Barbera, che ha presentato i risultati degli scavi condotti sotto l’edificio.

I ritrovamenti archeologici - Parallelamente alla costruzione del nuovo palazzo, avviata nel 2005 sui resti di un edificio di epoca post-unitaria, è stato condotto il più vasto scavo compiuto dopo quelli intrapresi in occasione del trasferimento della capitale del Regno d’Italia a Roma. Il risultato ottenuto sono 1600 metri quadrati di terreno investigati, 12 mila metri cubi di materiale passati al setaccio e più di 8 mila cassette di reperti attualmente in fase di pulizia e restauro. Tra i manufatti meglio conservati e di maggior interesse storico e archeologico spiccano una scala e una condotta per l’acqua recante le insegne dell’imperatore Claudio. “Sono molto felice di essere qui in duplice veste, da sindaco e iscritto all’Enpam dal 1979 – ha detto il sindaco di Roma Ignazio Marino –. Questa sede dimostra quanto Roma debba essere orgogliosa e attenta al suo patrimonio e quanto l’architettura contemporanea possa fare conservando comunque l’aspetto storico. Grazie all’Enpam che ha riqualificato la piazza qui di fronte”.

Lo scavo dà un contributo unico per poter ricostruire l’evoluzione degli insediamenti della Roma antica sul colle Esquilino. È in questa zona di proprietà degli imperatori infatti che insistevano i cosiddetti Horti Lamiani. L’area archeologica venuta alla luce testimonia la suddivisione in terrazzamenti, evidenziati dai muri lunghi e bassi, e arricchiti da numerose specie vegetali. Sulla stessa area inoltre, sono stati ritrovati i resti di un grande ambiente a pianta rettangolare di circa 400 metri quadri, risalente all’epoca imperiale e dotato di ambienti di servizio, di una fontana e di altre strutture murarie. Il progetto finale prevede la conservazione quasi integrale delle architetture e la trasformazione museale del seminterrato. Il piano destinato a ospitare la sala congressi della Fondazione sarà integrato da ricostruzioni virtuali in 3d, animazioni video, pannelli didascalici e vetrine espositive, per favorire la fruizione del contesto archeologico da parte del pubblico.

Riqualificazione dell’Esquilino - La nuova sede dell’Enpam inoltre restituisce decoro a piazza Vittorio e contribuisce a riqualificare il rione Esquilino. Nel palazzo, che è vigilato 24 ore su 24, lavorano ora 491 impiegati, con ricadute positive anche sulla sicurezza e sulle attività commerciali del quartiere. “Abbiamo fatto un’iniezione di medicina al quartiere” ha detto il presidente dell’Enpam, Alberto Oliveti. L’Ente è stato anche attento alla sostenibilità ambientale. Nonostante abbia coinvolto centinaia di persone, il cambiamento della sede di lavoro ha avuto un impatto pressoché nullo sulla viabilità locale: oltre la metà dei dipendenti (261) hanno l’abbonamento annuale al trasporto pubblico locale tramite il mobility manager dell’Enpam; il parcheggio sotterraneo può contenere tutti i motorini e le biciclette di coloro che arrivano su due ruote; ci sono inoltre una sessantina di posti auto.

Nei sotterranei un’area archeologica - Resti della Roma imperiale sotto la nuova sede dell’Enpam riaffiorano da un passato di distruzione in un processo di riqualificazione urbanistica.
Uno scavo archeologico così vasto non si vedeva a Roma dagli anni in cui è diventata capitale del Regno d’Italia. Sotto Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, la più grande piazza romana (316 x 174 metri) sono stati investigati 1.600 metri quadrati di terreno, passati al setaccio 12mila metri cubi di materiale e riempite più di 8mila cassette di reperti attualmente in fase di pulizia e restauro. Parallelamente alla costruzione dell’edificio dell’Enpam, gli archeologi della Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma hanno svolto e monitorato una campagna di scavo portando alla luce resti risalenti all’epoca imperiale (III/IV secolo d.C). Già dalla fine dell’Ottocento era documentata in questa zona la presenza dei cosiddetti ‘Horti Lamiani’, vaste proprietà, ville e giardini appartenute alla ‘gens Lamia’ passate poi al demanio imperiale. All’inaugurazione, pochi giorni prima di Natale, i resti sotto la sede dell’Enpam sono stati illustrati dalla Soprintendente per i beni archeologici di Roma Mariarosa Barbera, che ha seguito gli scavi fin dall’inizio. Il ritrovamento – ha detto – riguarda una tra le ville più grandi dell’antichità romana, una specie di Villa d’Este. “Un ambiente a pianta rettangolare di circa 400 metri quadri completamente ricoperto di marmi, gemme, bronzi dorati, tarsie colorate – ha detto Barbera.
Stiamo ricomponendo le migliaia di frammenti di affreschi ritrovati. Nell’immediato futuro saranno visibili in questa sede pareti decorate, tra le più belle del mondo antico”. Spiccano per interesse storico e archeologico oltre che per lo stato di conservazione la scala in marmo (nella foto a tutta pagina) e una condotta per l’acqua su cui è impresso il nome dell’imperatore Claudio.

PROGETTO AREA MUSEALE - Per recuperare e valorizzare i reperti archeologici il progetto finale prevede l’allestimento di un percorso museale nel piano seminterrato accanto alla sala convegni e a un bar. Gli scavi quindi diventeranno un luogo vivo. “Il rudere non viene isolato – ha detto Mirella Serlorenzi, funzionario della Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma – ma interagisce con le strutture moderne e diventa un arricchimento reciproco. Questo progetto ha dimostrato che è possibile conciliare tutela dell’antico e trasformazione della città contemporanea”. È prevista la conservazione quasi integrale delle architetture in parte visibili sotto pavimenti di vetro. Tutto questo nel contesto di un edificio in cui lavorano centinaia di dipendenti e si svolgono riunioni importanti per tutta la categoria dei medici e degli odontoiatri. Non potendo ricreare il contesto originario, saranno proposte ricostruzioni virtuali in 3d, animazioni video, effetti sonori, pannelli didascalici e vetrine espositive, in modo che il visitatore possa immaginare come era questa parte di città nel periodo romano. Da sottolineare – dice Serlorenzi – l’aspetto tecnologico e ingegneristico messo a punto per sorreggere le strutture archeologiche senza effettuare alcuna forma di delocalizzazione. Sono state fatte una serie di perforazioni circolari contigue riempite successivamente con tubi di acciaio legati tra loro a formare un sostegno”.

Scoperto uno dei palazzi preferiti dell'imperatore Caligola - Un team di archeologi ha rinvenuto a Roma le rovine di uno dei palazzi preferiti dell'imperatore Caligola. Il luogo era conosciuto per il suo giardino esotico, con piante provenienti da luoghi remoti e animali selvaggi di tutti gli angoli dell'Impero.
Un team di archeologi italiani ha annunciato una scoperta straordinaria: le rovine di uno dei palazzi preferiti di Caligola, il terzo imperatore romano. L'esistenza di questo edificio – noto come Nympheum (casa delle ninfe) nelle fonti classiche – era conosciuta, ma la localizzazione esatta era andata perduta. Fino a pochi anni fa.
Il palazzo perduto - La scoperta è stata realizzata durante gli scavi in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (più conosciuta come piazza Vittorio), nei pressi del Colosseo e della stazione ferroviaria di Roma Termini. I lavori erano cominciati tre anni fa e hanno portato alla luce decine di migliaia di resti archeologici, tra i quali anfore, pezzi di ceramica, gioielli, monete e una gran varietà di utensili domestici. Gli scavi più recenti sotto un edificio hanno portato a individuare le strutture del giardino che erano state sepolte, oltre a nuovi resti archeologici che hanno permesso di identificare il luogo come il palazzo perduto di Caligola.
Gli archeologi hanno rinvenuto semi di plante esotiche di origini diverse, ossa di animali selvaggi come cervi, orsi, leoni e struzzi. Sono stati questi gli elementi che hanno permesso di identificare la struttura come il Nympheum. Mirella Serlorenzi, direttrice del sitio archeologico, ha spiegato che alcuni di questi animali «correvano liberi come fosse un paesaggio incantato, ma [c'erano] anche animali feroci che venivano utilizzati, come nel Colosseo, per i giochi circensi privati». Caligola è passato alla storia proprio per il suo carattere stravagante e crudele, che si riconduce di solito a una misteriosa malattia mentale che lo colpì nel corso del suo primo anno di regno.
Gli scavi hanno permesso di identificare varie strutture del giardino, come una scala di marmo bianco che collegava i diversi livelli del giardino e una tubatura per il trasporto dell'acqua. Il nome Nympheum evoca le ninfe, divinità dei boschi e delle montagne, e in effetti nel giardino si era voluto ricreare uno spazio selvaggio. Questo spiegherebbe la presenza degli animali e dei ninfei, piccole grotte dedicate proprio alle divinità boschive. Le autorità italiane in collaborazione con l'Enpam, l'ente previdenziale dei medici proprietario del terreno nel quale è stata realizzata la scoperta, hanno lavorato per trasformare il luogo nel Museo-Ninfeo di Piazza Vittorio, che presto sarà aperto al pubblico.

Nei giorni scorsi è stato pubblicato su “Il Messaggero” un articolo a firma di Laura Larcan che descrive con dovizia di particolari il progetto da tempo annunciato e in fase di avanzata realizzazione di un museo nei sotterranei del Palazzo ENPAM a Piazza Vittorio che donerà un’altra fantastica attrazione archeologica al Rione Esquilino e alla città di Roma: stiamo parlando della Villa di Caligola, praticamente un’altra Domus Aurea che sorgeva nell’area dell’odierna Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

La singolarità è che oltre una costruzione fastosa con rivestimenti marmorei di eccezionale qualità e bellezza nella proprietà imperiale erano presenti lussureggianti giardini popolati da numerosi animali in libertà e fantastici giochi d’acqua. Presto sarà possibile ammirare ciò che rimane della “domus” comprese delle scale originali che collegavano i diversi livelli dei giardini e migliaia di reperti archeologici (alcuni unici nel loro genere) rinvenuti negli scavi che sono stati eseguiti dalla Soprintendenza speciale archeologia belle arti e paesaggio di Roma per riportare alla luce questa ulteriore perla del Rione Esquilino. Di seguito l’articolo del Messaggero del 15 novembre 2020 e i diversi post sui social network che testimoniano come la notizia abbia avuto una vasta eco anche internazionale.

Senza ombra di dubbio è un posto da visitare e che non dimenticherete. Il buio e il suono dei tamburi nella notte, i fumi delle bancarelle che vendono cibo, i fuochi, la varietà di persone che lo popola sono un ricordo vivido nella mia mente. Jemaa el Fna è la piazza al centro della quale si sviluppa la città vecchia di Marrakech. È circondata a nord dal souk, a est dalla Kasbah. Patrimonio orale dell'umanità Unesco è trafficatissima giorno e notte: tanti i turisti, ma la massima parte delle persone che la popolano sono marocchini. È sede di bancarelle che vendono diversi genere di merci (dalla frutta, alle spremute, alle stoffe, a oggetti usati contro le malattie). La mattina è dominata da incantatori di serpenti, acquaioli, decoratrici con l'hennè. Ma fate attenzione perché tutto ha un prezzo. La foto scattata con la scimmia o con il cobra che vi saranno messi in testa o il ritratto dell'acquaiolo (non bevete l'acqua se ci tenete allo stomaco, però) andranno remunerati e vi conviene contrattare il prezzo prima per evitare sgraditissime sorprese. La sera a dominare la piazza buia sono invece concerti, cantastorie e le decine di affollatissime bancarelle dedicate al cibo e che offrono in particolare economici brochettes (spiedini di carne o pesce), con i fumi delle grigliate che si elevano sopra la piazza illuminati dalle luci. Uno stand vale l'altro e mangiarci è un'esperienza da fare.
La Piazza Jema El-Fna è uno dei punti di ritrovo principali di Marrakech. Nel 2001 l'Unesco l'ha denominata Patrimonio Orale e Immateriale dell'Umanità. È situata a lato dei vari suk e a partire dalle ore 17.00 si riempie di venditori di succhi di frutta naturali, frutta secca, donne che dipingono il corpo con l'hennè, incantatori di serpenti, musici, venditori ambulanti, tassisti, veggenti, turisti e addirittura dentisti! Inoltre è circondata da piccole moschee e la chiamata alla preghiera diventa un vero spettacolo. I caffè più famosi della città si trovano proprio qui: Il Café De France, l'Argana... Tutti hanno terrazze in cui sedersi per sorseggiare tè alla menta o cenare con vista sulla piazza. A ora di cena,in particolare durante il tramonto, vengono improvvisati punti di ristoro che propongono pietanze di carne, pesce o cuscus.
La Piazza Jemaa el Fna è la piazza centrale di Marrakech, luogo dichiarato dall'UNESCO "di tradizione orale". Qui si recano gli "Gnaouas", un gruppo di musicisti locali, a suonare musica e percussioni, accompagnati da incantatori di serpenti o di scimmie. Si raccontano storie, si balla, si mangia fino a tarda ora. Durante il giorno la piazza, che si trova accanto alla Kutubia, è quasi vuota a causa del gran caldo. Nel pomeriggio iniziano ad apparire i primi tavoli e le prime sedie, assieme ai venditori di cibo e a coloro che preparano carne alla griglia e cous-cous. Durante il giorno si può prendere un succo d'arancia, spremuto all'istante, accompagnato da datteri e dolci tipici. Il momento migliore rimane il tardo pomeriggio, quando la piazza si riempie di gente del posto, persone arrivate dal deserto per vendere tessuti o animali magici in grado di curare qualsiasi malanno, famiglie che vengono a mangiare.
Jamaa el Fna (Arabic: ساحة جامع الفناء jâmiʻ al-fanâʼ) is a square and market place in Marrakesh's medina quarter (old city). The origin of its name is unclear: Jemaa means "congregational mosque" in Arabic, probably referring to a destroyed Almoravid mosque. "Fanâʼ" or "finâ'" can mean "death" or "a courtyard, space in front of a building." Thus, one meaning could be "The mosque or assembly of death," or "The Mosque at the End of the World". A more likely explanation is that it refers to a mosque with a distinctive courtyard or square in front of it. Marrakesh was founded by the Almoravids 1070-1072. After a destructive struggle, it was falling to the Almohads in 1147. Following this, Jamaa el Fna was renovated along with much of the city. The city walls were also extended by Abou Yacoub Youssef and particularly by Yacoub el Mansour 1147-1158. The surrounding mosque, palace, hospital, parade ground and gardens around the edges of the marketplace were also overhauled, and the Kasbah was fortified. Subsequently, with the fortunes of the city, Jamaa el Fna saw periods of decline and also renewal. The place remains the main square of Marrakesh, used by locals and tourists. During the day it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, youths with chained Barbary apes, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers who will pose for photographs for tourists. As the day progresses, the entertainment on offer changes: the snake charmers depart, and late in the day the square becomes more crowded, with Chleuh dancing-boys (it would be against custom for girls to provide such entertainment), story-tellers (telling their tales in Berber or Arabic, to an audience of appreciative locals), magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As darkness falls, the square fills with dozens of food-stalls as the number of people on the square peaks. The square is edged along one side by the Marrakesh souk, a traditional North African market catering both for the common daily needs of the locals, and for the tourist trade. On other sides are hotels and gardens and cafe terraces offering an escape from the noise and confusion of the square. Once a bus station, the place was closed to vehicle traffic in the early 2000s. The authorities are well aware of its importance to the tourist trade, and a strong but discreet police presence ensures the safety of visitors. The idea of the UNESCO project Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity came from people concerned about the Jamaa el Fna. The place is known for its active concentration of traditional activities by storytellers, musicians and performers, but it was threatened by economic development pressures. In fighting for the protection of traditions, the residents called for action on an international level, to recognize the need for the protection of such places - termed "cultural spaces" - and other popular and traditional forms of cultural expression. UNESCO encourages communities to identify, document, protect, promote and revitalize such heritage. The UNESCO label aims to raise awareness about the importance of oral and intangible heritage as an essential component of cultural diversity. The spectacle of Jamaa el Fna is repeated daily and each day it is different. Everything changes - voices, sounds, gestures, the public which sees, listens, smells, tastes, touches. The oral tradition is framed by one much vaster - that we can call intangible. The Square, as a physical space, shelters a rich oral and intangible tradition.
Jamaâ El Fna (en arabe : جامع الفناء, littéralement en français: "assemblée des trépassés" est une place située à Marrakech à côté de la mosquée Koutoubia. Ce haut-lieu touristique attire sans cesse plus d'un million de visiteurs venus pour assister aux spectacles animés par les charmeurs de serpents, les dresseurs de singes, les conteurs, les musiciens et d’autres artistes populaires, jeux, dessin au henné, etc... du début de soirée jusqu'à l'appel de la prière de l'aube. L'espace culturel de la place Jemaa el-Fna a été inscrit par l’UNESCO en 2001 en tant que patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'humanité. Elle se distingue aussi par des orateurs qui racontent des histoires ou vantent les mérites de produits magiques. Son nom de "assemblée des trépassés" vient du fait qu'elle servait autrefois à l'exposition, sur ordre du Sultan, des têtes des condamnés à mort qui venaient d'être exécutés. Certains jours, on pouvait ainsi compter jusqu'à quarante-cinq têtes. Elle est le théâtre d'une explosion meurtrière le 28 avril 20113. L’attentat, provoqué par une bombe actionnée à distance dont l'auteur présumé a été arrêté le 5 mai 2011, a fait 17 morts dont 8 français.
