Disconnected the keypad from the computer and added some blinkenlights for hardware debugging. The (obsolete) MM74C922N encoder chip is working! The problems I had must be software, which is great news. My 6502 assembler is very rudimentary but this is a great way to learn.
To debug bus impedance issues in one of our electronics crates, it was necessary to supply a square wave output from a function generator to the backplane as directly as possible, with no intermediate cables. Sasha did the honours.
