India brought me a piece of paper and asked if I could make it into a rocket ship. I was busy cooking inner at the time and told her I couldn't do it. She looked a little disappointed and I felt bad. While she was in the bath that evening, daddy and I took it in turns keeping an eye on her while we made a homemade rocket from the inside of a toilet roll, some paper and foil. Episode 3 of our road trip adventure! We started the day making wishes at the lobby fountain in our hotel... The Pensacola Grand. India's first wish was for a unicorn and her second wish was for a wishing fountain of her own, so she could have endless wishes! The 17th Ave bridge AKA The Pensacola Graffiti Bridge, built in 1888, draws locals and visitors from around the world, all leaving their mark. Generation after generation have been painting this local landmark for decades, the graffiti changes daily, making this tiny bridge an evolving, ever changing work of art. From Memorials and birthday messages to comical drawings and even the occasional prom invite, this bridge has seen it all. Graffiti is illegal, but the Pensacola community has embraced this tradition and the police turn a blind eye to the nightly taggers that cover every inch of the bridge, surrounding rocks and adjacent car park... Very cool! The Futuro UFO house was designed by Finnish architect, Matti Suuronen in the late '60s. It has survived several hurricanes and a tornado over the years, making us wonder if all Floridians should be living in spaceships! Dome of a Home is another unusual home design on Pensacola Beach that is deemed hurricane proof (The NBC News weather team rode out Hurricane Ivan safely in the Dome Home). Road trip!!! Daddy had to make the trip north to the panhandle of Florida (work related stuff) So, we decided to tag along and have an adventure. The Scenic Byway Coastal Trail was so pretty! We stopped at a wonderful little town called Carrabelle, where we saw the smallest police station in the world and then, spent some time at the Bottle house. The Carrabelle Bottle House is the creation of former art professor, Leon Weisener. More than 6,000 recycled, glass bottles went into creating this beautiful structure, which stands alongside an equally stunning, 15 foot lighthouse (also made from colorful bottles). Geodesic spheres in the yard are an eye catching addition to the main structures and, India's favorite, a small pond with an alligator water feature, make the grounds so pretty. We were warmly welcomed by Zak and Sophie, two gorgeous poodles that couldn't be friendlier! If you visit, don't forget to shut the gate behind you, so the dogs don't get out. Leon's wife was kind enough to show us around the property and give us a little background info. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay long, but I hear that the bottle house is just beautiful at night, with both the house and the lighthouse being lit up, creating a colorful show. India loved swimming at the hotel pool! Aunt Toni bought her a new costume and an inflatable duck to help her float. Daddy gave India her first lesson in kicking her legs and I think, she made great progress. I wish we had longer at the hotel, so she could gain more confidence, before we go back to learning to swim in the ocean. A quick throwback to the beginning of Summer. We spent some family time at a little park in Belleair. The kids played in the playground for a bit and then we discovered the most beautiful, tiny beach. We had no idea it was there. Christmas Eve is such an exciting time! India and Brubba always open a couple of gifts from Nanny Hazel, including a new outfit for them to wear on Christmas day. We spent Mama's birthday on the North Beach at Fort DeSoto Park. India Rose and Brubba love to collect interesting shells and this is the perfect beach for shelling! The historic town of Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans in any city in the US. India Rose spent the day exploring the sponge docks, learning about the early Greek immigrants that built the sponge industry in this area. Tarpon Springs was once known as the "sponge capital of the world". Our family then headed down to the bayou to witness the Greek Orthodox Epiphany celebrations, a tradition dating back 113 years in the Tarpon Springs area. The Archbishop and other clergy gather to bless the bayou, before casting a golden cross into the waters. Local boys aged 15-18 then dive into the bayou to retrieve the cross. The young man that finds the cross is blessed by the Archbishop and said to have good luck all year. This celebration draws thousands of people from around the United States. After the "cross day" ceremony we visited a small chapel, the reported site of many miracles. India visits John's pass village, exploring the shops and the boardwalk along the waterfront. On a visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Aunt Toni treated India to a Mermaid Glitter Tattoo! The CMA was offering glitter tattoos (for a small donation) as part of their holiday celebrations "A Winter's Wonderland" Our 3 year old was so excited to be able to pick her own colors. She sat so nicely while the lady painted the mermaid onto her arm. She chose red hair, just like Ariel, a golden tail and of course, lots of purple! India's favorite part of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium was touching the stingrays! She loved meeting Winter, the dolphin but the stingrays were all she talked about after we left. We explained to India that all the animals that lived at this aquarium were rescues and that they had been saved after illness or injury, she really wanted to bring them all home with her! On the drive home she asked her daddy if she could have a pool in the backyard, so she could have some rays! I love that this aquarium allows the kids to interact with nature, learning about these beautiful creatures and how we can protect them from harm in the future. India Rose and her big brother play at the East Beach playground, Fort DeSoto Park. As a baby, India was never much of a climber but now she wants to do everything her "Brubba" does. This play area overlooks Tampa Bay and the Skyway Bridge. The kids loved seeing the big ships passing while they had fun on the slides. I love the way that Brubba keeps his baby sister safe as he helps her explore the "big kid" stuff! These two are too cute together. The waterfront parks in Oldsmar are so pretty! India wanted to get out the house and find "a special beach" and this little park did not disappoint. The view of Old Tampa Bay was beautiful. We walked the trail and pier, Dad and India had fun on the swings. India's favorite part of the day was the stage... With an audience of 3, she danced in her own one girl show! The town of Oldsmar was named after R.E. Olds... A pioneer of the automotive industry, who is credited with creating the modern assembly line which he used to build the first mass-produced car... What a week of celebrations! First, we celebrated Diwali, the festival of light, with a small fireworks show in the street. Then, in honor of Daddy's birthday, we spent the day on the beach and then had cake! We finished the week with trick or treating at the mall, for Halloween. India was Princess Anna and her brother was a zombie clown. So much fun (and sugar) we needed a week off to recover. Today is the birthday of A. A. Milne, author of Winnie The Pooh. India loves to read about Pooh Bear's adventures! We celebrated Winnie The Pooh Day early, with a game of Pooh sticks. To play the game, you must each stand on one side of a bridge and throw your sticks in, then run to the other side. The stick that flows out the other side first is the winner. We went to a little park with a bridge, unfortunately the water was still and not flowing at all, so we had to make our way another bridge. It was a little chilly but we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and the kids had fun playing their new game. I hope all our British friends enjoyed their Mother's Day weekend! The Big Bend power station, in Tampa might seem like a strange place to celebrate British mother's day, but we had a great time. During the winter, the warm water surrounding the power station provides critical protection from the cold for hundreds of manatees. Unfortunately, we arrived too late in the year to see the sea cows, but there was still plenty to do at this Florida attraction. A touch tank, under the boardwalks, is home to the official mascots of Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. Once baseball season starts, the stingrays head back to their Major League Baseball stadium. India loves the stingrays, she had so much fun and even made a friend! We also enjoyed the butterfly garden and all it's beautiful flowers. A tidal walkway gave us better view of the power station, we will definitely be back to see the manatees next winter. We finished the day with smoothies on Clearwater Beach. I love our family adventures and I am so grateful to be India and Brubba's mama! We spent a day at Hunsader Farms, in Bradenton, Florida. Our family enjoyed picking wildflowers and sunflowers at this U-pick style farm. The sunflower season had come to an end, making the hunt for flowers in bloom a real challenge. India loved seeing the animals, the goats and kangaroos were her favorite. In addition to the petting zoo and farmers market, the farm is home to an Old Town, complete with a jailhouse and saloon... A cool reminder of how America once looked long ago. On Saturdays, a train offers visitors rides through the sunflower fields and in the fall they have a pumpkin festival. However, on this sunny, summer day we had the whole farm to ourselves and we were so grateful to get away from the crowds and spend some much needed time out in nature. After a year indoors, we are so happy to be back exploring and having adventures. This was the perfect day out for our fun-loving family, away from the tourists in our local beach town, enjoying the sunshine. Aunt Toni's last day in Florida! We spent the day with her at her hotel, India swam in a pool for the first time and she loved it! Our toddler swims in the sea a lot but has never been able to swim anywhere that didn't have waves! She took her inflatable boat and her life jacket. Such a great day, enjoying the sunshine with family. We wish it didn't have to end, but Aunt Toni had to go home to Arizona, India hates to say goodbye and will miss her so much. The vendors are always so friendly and there is a wonderful variety of locally handcrafted jewelry & art, in addition to fresh and organic produce. Episode 6 of our road trip is dedicated to Ray Charles and Bo Diddley! Greenville Florida is the hometown of Ray Charles.... Or "Rachel" as India calls him! While he is known for being born in Georgia, his mother was from this little town in northern Florida, after giving birth, she returned here to raise the young Ray. He grew up here until he lost his eyesight at age 7. He was then enrolled in the school for the Deaf and Blind in St Augustine, but visited his mother at their Greenville home regularly until she died, when he was 15. Greenville is so proud of everything Ray accomplished in music, they have erected a statue in his honor and you can tour the little house he called home (by appointment only) After exploring the hometown of one musical legend, we stopped by the grave of another. You might remember that we stayed in Bo Diddley's hometown in Mississippi, when we evacuated hurricane Irma. So it seemed fitting that we would stop by and pay our respects at his final resting place, Bronson Florida. We had a lot of trouble even getting India an eye appointment, the doctors didn't want to see anyone under the age of 5... So finding glasses that fit her tiny nose was quite difficult. After searching several stores, India found a pair of purple butterfly glasses that she loves... And boy, does she look adorable in them! She only wears them for a few hours each day, to help strengthen her weaker eye. Our friends and family have been sending her pictures of them in their glasses, welcoming her to the club. When I was a kid, we made these paper fortune tellers. I made one for India Rose, but instead of fortunes on the inside, I drew pictures of animals. Brubba played the game with her, counting and spelling out the colors, India then did her best impressions of the animals she picked. For Daddy's birthday, we visited a place that is very special to our family. In a remote part of the beach, there is a place where people put shells on the trees and make wishes... The Wishing Shell Trees! When we visited this magical spot a few years ago, I wished for a baby girl, a few months later we found out I was pregnant with India Rose ❤️ Upon returning, we discovered that many of the trees had been lost, last year, to hurricane Irma and those that still stand had been stripped of many of the ornaments and shells that had made them so beautiful. Still, we love this place and the walk there and back was breathtaking! Sunset on the beach is always so special, but birthday sunsets are best! Clearwater Beach has been voted America's best beach by TripAdvisor... and by India Rose! We like to head a little further north from Pier 60, to avoid the crowds of tourists on vacation, enjoying the attractions. The beach here is quieter and our little one has room to run and play. Mama and Daddy love spending this time with our baby girl, enjoying the sunset and paddling in the Gulf of Mexico. There are some pretty shells here, the further north you head, the bigger and prettier they get! The water was warm, but a bit too choppy for our toddler to swim, that didn't stop her getting wet though. I hope you all enjoy sharing our evening on the beach. Every year we visit the Christmas lights at Largo Central Park. India Rose loves to explore the beautiful display of holiday decorations. 2 million lights cover the trees and turn this park into a winter wonderland, filled with the magic of Christmas. This annual tradition has become part of our family's holiday ritual, the kids love the huge Christmas tree at the center of the park. They have a ferris wheel and carousel too, but this year it was a little too cold to enjoy the rides, so we had a quick wonder around the park before heading home for some hot chocolate. A few weeks ago, the breaks went out on daddy's car... While he was driving it! Getting Ubers to work was proving expensive, so it was time to buy a new vehicle. India and Mama got crafty and made daddy a homemade card for Valentine's day. She decorated a card with glitter glue and we stuck a cute heart shaped rose on it. Then we made a Valentines mouse and a puppy from some crafty stuff we had lying around and we baked his favorite chocolate chip cookies. We spent an afternoon in Downtown Disney Springs shopping district. The steamboat water taxi is free to ride and we all know that India loves a boat! Watching her face light up as we explored the stores, filled with princesses and magic, was priceless. We stopped by The Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum, in Downtown St Petersburg, Florida. This small, waterfront park has over 200 palms representing 45 species from around the world! As you know, India is a big fan of trees (and all nature), she had so much fun exploring this arboretum... Despite the stormy weather! The wind was blowing pretty hard.
