Not many people know but a lot of male deer have canine teeth. In Muntjac and Chinese water deer they are particularly noticeable. Older stags tend to lose them if they get very old.
This deer was in the river injured from what we believe to be an incident involving a car. Due to stress, trauma and injury he was stood in the river, along came a viscous excuse for a dog and mauled the poor deer, ripping his hind quarters to pieces. Sadly the deer was in such bad shape that he would have died over night, slow, painful and alone. The police came out and finished him off to out him out of his misery. However, the policeman who is in charge of the large rifle was out on a call already so the best the police could offer was armed response team. Equipped with .223 assault rifle, Insufficient to take such a large animal. Illegal in fact. .24 is the minimum caliber allowed in England to shoot red deer. So to draw to an end the deer had been hit by a car, mauled by a large dog and took FIVE SHOTS TO THE HEAD before he finally died. Dear dog owners, if your dog is a viscous wild animal don't let it out in the country side. If a dog were to attack a farmers sheep it would be shot. END OF. If this incident had happened on my land its safe to say the deer would've had a better chance at life as the dog would have been lucky to get away alive.
A sad way to end the life of an innocent and noble beast.
This was a fresh corpse, his muscles hadn't stiffened up and his chest cavity was still full of blood. The brownish green was all the grass he had eaten before he died. I guess he had been there a day or two maximum.
