Pennsylvania Railroad DD1 3936, built in 1911 and at one time was beautifully restored and preserved INSIDE the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, has been languishing outside for the last 20 years or so due to what I can only call gross incompetence from the museum staff.

Only one pair, Nos. 3936 and 3937, survives. This pair is at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania on static display and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is beyond disgusting that the museum has allowed these unique motors to rot away. The museum is so incompetent that when they "restored" this thing they never noticed that the number boards still had the Penn Central renumbering of 4781 and just left them intact.

Words cannot properly express my utter contempt for the operators of the PA museum. Just about everything once donated to this place has been left to rot despite donations.

I have pissed away many dollars to this mismanaged place over the years and am absolutely disgusted at the waste of funds.

As this is upload 3000 (according to the stats) the subject of choice goes to a bus that I first set eyes upon whilst under construction in 1978 and then had to wait a further 14 years, not to mention a trip half way around the globe to obtain a shot of the complete vehicle.

China Motor Bus DD1, its solitary East Lancs-bodied Dennis Dominator, was the first rear-engined Dennis for a Hong Kong operator and the forerunner of around 1600 similarly configured Dominators, Dragons and Condors (the latter two essentially 3-axle versions of the former) supplied until 2000.

Configured for 102 seats to 3+2 layout, the body order was confirmed by CMB in June 1978 and the completed vehicle exhibited on the Hestair Dennis stand at the first NEC Motor Show in October 1978. It was officially delivered to Dennis a month later and shipped to Hong Kong, where it entered CMB service in January 1979.

Later joined by 6 standard wheelbase lowheight examples with Alexander ckd bodywork for the Peak service, in its later years DD1 was generally used as a spare bus by CMB and confined to specific workings, usually with the same driver.

By October 1992, when your photographer visited Hong Kong for the first time, it had gained this promotional livery for a Road Safety Campaign, also carried by a number of other vehicles at the time.

As for tracking it down, with limited knowledge of the area, a call earlier in the day to the CMB contact that had been provided prior to the trip, established that it was due to work a single round trip on an early evening 82 from Chai Wan to North Point Ferry, and right on cue, in fading light, the bus appeared, only to swallow up the waiting passengers and depart rather sharpish.

Fortunately, there were other photographic opportunities during this and subsequent trips, some made possible with the kind assistance of CMB staff, to whom I owe a debt of gratitude.

Until the very early 1980s, W Gash of Newark were still regularly employing their elderly fleet of Daimler CVD6 motorbuses on the Newark - Nottingham services. Passing the Spring House pub, DD1 a Massey bodied Daimler CVD6 approaches the outskirts of Newark town centre on a Saturday afternoon in June 1980.
