personal note: as i write this, this property and dozens near it have been evacuated due to a dramatic increase in violence of the ongoing eruption at the eyjafjallajökull glacier. i wanted to take a moment to extend my best wishes to helga haraldsdóttir (the proprietor of this particular farm), her family, and immediate neighbors during this event... i hope you all return home safely, soon.
if you're curious how close the volcano is: that snowcap—that's the glacier. further, a careful observer can actually see smoke from the low-level eruption from last week, billowing in the upper right corner of this frame. it was so close that after the sun set, darkened skies glowed magma-orange all night.
Day 2 of our hike from Wamena to the territory of the Yali ethnic group. We left our campsite (at Jel sp?), still in the Dani part of the region, and walked through a mix of farmland and areas where trees had been felled, then a mixed walk (ups and downs) along the gorge; lunchbreak in a village with an abandoned lading strip. Overall we climb a net 700-800m to camp at 2,600/2,700 m (near Kurima, the last of the Dani villages).
